@@you_can_fuck_your_own_ass_69 Absolutely no regrets. I have a daily as my 4 seater 2013 Honda Accord Sport original owner 116k miles. The Supra is just a special car specially for spirited drives in the canyons, highways, etc. Such an amazing handling car. The GR86 was also nice and would have fixed my itch for a sporty car, but I was discouraged after reading so much about the 2023 GR86 RVT potential issues. Not sure if the rvt issue will cause permanent damage or just simply exaggerated by the internet, but I didn't want to take my chances. Supra all the way. The manual shifting feels like butter in the Supra. Get it or test drive one and you'll see what I mean.

@@tone3560 I never drove a 2023 GR86 becuase I couldn't find one in my area to test drive. Kind of hard to drive it if I couldn't locate one nearby, but I'm sure they are easier to find now. I've spoken to Techs, read forums, watched KZbin videos on the rvt issues. My thoughts are yes there is residual rvt, but I don't have personal experience on any long term effects. I thought people freaked out too quickly, but I don't own one so my opinion is simply that.

Thanks for this ownership comparison, nice to see an unbiased perspective about daily usability. I’ve been cross shopping them, and the 86 is very attractive from a pricing perspective, and I love the styling/packaging of it. I tend to nitpick with ride quality, and I think the supra/bmw’s B58 engine sounds awesome with aftermarket exhaust, so still planning to go for the Supra manual. The waitlist continues 😅

Hey buddy, I'm also cross shoping them two. I'm looking for a second-car track toy that is reliable and I don't really care about the daily usability. For that the gr86 sounds like a better deal. The wear on the track might be immense and maintaining a BMW seems like it would eat into my wallet too much. Manual Supra is a sweet car, but the waitlist is too long and the b58 is almost 2x the power of the gr86. But it also costs double the price. I've also heard the supra is not as compliant on the track as the gr86.

I like both cars but ended up with an A91-MT Supra (one of the 1/500 special editions). It's a nicer car overall for a daily driver. I'd still like to pick up a GR86 eventually, but I already had an S2000, and finding a GR86 for MSRP has been nearly impossible for the last year or so. I decided to build my S2000 as my track car for now. The Supra can be really great on track too (check out Jackie Ding's time attack Supra, in auto), but, for me, it's too new/nice/expensive to be a heavily modified track car at this point in my life, and it would be worse on consumables on track. I'm keeping it as a nice, fun, comfortable daily driver street car for the foreseeable future. Ironically enough, the 8HP auto trans Supra might actually be the better performance car vs the manual. It shifts almost as quickly as the DCT in previous gen BMWs. But the manual is more enjoyable for a street car/daily driver. The manual is largely still in the unknown category when you get into performance mods though. We don't know how much power it can take, and there still really aren't aftemarket clutches available for it yet, whereas the 8hp auto can be upgraded to handle 800hp pretty easily (as we can see already on many time attack and drag cars). I will say I am still very interested in trying a C8 Corvette at some point though.

The manual ECU is not tunable. The only way to “tune” it is via a piggyback device. Personally I think it has a nice amount of power and it feels quick with the lower final drive vs the auto.

@@Chowder838 your point being is bc you have an expensive truck, so therefore you can easily afford a Supra? I’d actually think it’s the opposite, especially if you’re still making payments on that truck.. fact is, most Americans can’t afford to buy a Supra, especially as they are being sold marked up. They’re not in the same price range. Supra is just the better car between the two without a doubt. Objective performance (stopwatch), or sensory feel/engagement? Those are not the same. The GR arguably has a bit more of the latter, at least IME. Extremely tossable near the limits. Love both cars, and I’m actually considering between both ; but I think I need to first figure out which of my other cars it would be replacing . For my club’s time attack events, maybe pick the supra (maybe even pick the AT variant). but for just our twisty mountain backroads, I think I’d prefer the GR’s lightweight feel & rotation-happy personality , & also pocket the change…

The fake engine noise is there for a purpose I think, besides trying to sound sporty. It actually lets you know the rev because without it, the car is sooooooo quiet you can’t hear the engine or the exhaust until above 4k rpm. Unless you swap on a tomei, other aftermarket catbacks do very little to extract any sound out of this car. That’s coming from my personal experience in a BRZ with STI catback and HKS catback.

The reason you can't hear the engine in the BRZ (I think you're exaggerating) is because it gets masked by all the road noise these cars have. Nice work. I can't recall if Toyota has put the MT into the Supra 2.0, but I 'm assuming you are testing the 3.0 here. I would be curious to see how the Supra 2.0 with the 8-speed automatic compares to the GR86 (either transmission). It would be a bit closer on price. I think you'll like the Borla exhaust. Not sure which one your are getting, but I've had the Borla axle back on my '17 BRZ for almost 5 years now, and have no complaints. The stock exhaust was a bit tame for my tastes, and the Borla adds some fun, plus lets your hear to rev match. It is pretty non-intrusive at highway crusing speeds too. No droning. The axle back was an easy bolt on swap. Have fun! I envy the power of the new gen GR/BRZ. My '17 is the Limited with Performance Pack, which is proving to be a great addition. This package added the SACHS dampers, slightly wider wheels, and the Brembo brake package (for $ 1200 on top of the Limited). The ride is suprisingly compliant given the buttoned down performance in the twisties. But it is almost never harsh. Waiting for them to offer some packages for this next gen. They seem slow to get these out. Finding the new gen on dealer lots in my area is still challenging.

I could see cross shopping these two cars. The cars I on my list to consider were GR86, Supra, Mustang Mach 1, Corvette, Nissan Z. The negatives for each are: Corvette - No manual transmission option anymore (thus not appealing anymore), Toyota Supra - Actually a BMW. Thus BMW reliability and BMW maintenance costs (thus not appealing), Mustang Mach 1 (only major negative is they won't be around much longer and the 2024 Mustang Blackhorse looks nowhere near as good), Nissan Z - Don't really like the front with the giant rectangle grill. GR86 - Wish they could make it a little more powerful w/o compromising weight, not sure about Subaru engine reliability, and backseat is smaller than Mach 1 (I view back seats as not a requirement, but a positive). I don't care about most technology in new cars. I want something fun to drive (light weight goes a long way to fun to drive), with good looks, and reliable as possible. The GR86 seems like a pretty good fit. I really like that it is about as simple of a car as you can get today. You don't need super expensive suspensions and brakes when you have a very light weight. The Mustang Mach 1 is also very appealing, though it is heavy. Those two are really the only two I would have interest in when I end up needing a new car.

I've considered most of those things as well. I bought my Supra in 2019, and the GR86 in 2022, but honestly I really, really enjoy the 86 because it's so engaging to drive, despite not being perfect. It checks most of the boxes, and it's pretty cheap to operate. My next move is installing the Borla exhaust to fix the sound issue.

My problem with the 86 is.. it’s no Honda s2000. And you can get a decent s2k in decent condition/miles for about $25k (right now). Comparing it to the 86, The s2k is (IMHO) better, pretty much in every department, including the “feel” factor you get when on the road, which is the main appeal to the 86. The Honda is just more visceral in that regard. I gladly paid slightly over MSRP for a white 2024 GR premium Supra in manual, and even if it’s over twice the price of the 86, I still see more value and car for the money, in the Supra. There’s just no comparison.

When you opt for the MT you lose the entire safety suite that Suburu offers in the BRZ! Thankfully an editor of an auto enthusiast magazine thoroughly dissected the differences in suspension & I preferred the BRZ for all the reasons people wanted the Toyota that being easier to break loose the back end; FWIW Toyota made no changes to the front end suspension components; same as previous iteration. Imagine in the midst of COVID a dealership offered $1,750 off of MSRP on a special order /lease for loaded top of the line model when every store in town, regardless of brand, was asking 6K over sticker. It has .99 on the skid pad; previously all my cars were SS Camaros every 3 yrs; more fun in this! (Was afraid it would be a lose lose proposition; less hp less torque smaller tires but I was wrong).

The GR86 isn't a rebadged subaru sports car, it was a joint venture. If you've read the development story of the GT86 it's a full JOINT venture from both Subaru and Toyota. Product planning, engineering design objectives/targets, concept and approach attributed to Toyota Development and production, and components to Subaru. Without Toyota, Subaru couldn't ever make a sports car like the BRZ. Without Subaru, Toyota would've abandoned making this sports car or taking a substantial amount of time to develop an engine that fits the design objectives/criteria (low centre of gravity). All in all, don't hate joint ventures/collaborations, its pursued to offset manufacturing and R&D cost that would've eitehr drive the price of these vehicles ALOT or taking an abnormal amount of development time.

What sports car did little old Subaru offer to Toyota to rebadge? The 86/brz is such a mismash of Toyota Subaru parts it doesn't even qualify as one or the other. The rear differential is from an old Toyota, the transmission is from a Lexus IS; the EFI system is Toyota's, the stalks are out of a Corolla. I mean you can just go on to see the parts bin special going on in the 86/BRZ. Meanwhile, the Zupra isn't a rebadged roadster since one isn't a roadster.... The Zupra is BMW parts modified to meet Toyotas quality specifications because we all know how BMWs electronics are finicky as hell. There was a deep dive article in the creation of the Zupra and its far from just rebranding a Z4.
