Amazing how much these cars are worth now. Back in 1997 when I graduated high school, they were around mid 40's brand new. The 6 speed turbo samples in good condition literally doubled their price now. The Automatic Turbos are around the 40 to 50K price range. Even the NA Supras are worth about 30K. Un-real.

So I have a question, can the automatic Supra be modified to something more than 500hp? And what’s the max up to u could get when you modify it to the max?
@DriversTherapy
@DriversTherapy 4 жыл бұрын
You are almost right on the money. Auto Supras engines (2JZ-GTE) wise can hold up to 600-800hp on stock internals with supporting mods like turbo kit, FMIC, fuel system upgrades, and a proper tune. The automatic transmission can hold around 500hp like you mentioned but they are easy to upgrade. ATF is the most popular company. And to be honest, way cheaper than trying to get the V160 to act the way you want it. If you have not seen the fastest auto it is by Baltic Supra. The owner is super cool and I like his YT channel as well. Thanks for watching the video and I welcome you to follow along by punching that subscribe button. Have a great day and stay safe.

That sounds like a super deal!!! I would do it in a heart beat. I am not sure if you are in the U.S. but a Supra TT Auto is worth almost double or triple that of a Nissan 350Z in good condition. If the Z is a Nismo or a track edition with the Brembo brakes with really low miles and you really want a Z I would ask for cash on top. If you are not in the states, I hear the Supras sell for a lower price and I can not tell you if that is a good deal or not in that case.

If there is no traffic and some nice straight aways with no lights, the 5 speed is a dream. But when it comes to traffic, that 5 speed does get old fast. Where the auto, straight open road or traffic, it does not matter ... When i get my mk4 supra, it will be auto because i just dont want to deal with shifting anymore, especially if im not going to be racing it from light to light, the idea now is to enjoy the ride ... I've driven 6 speed V160 Getrag RZ and I bought a 4 speed auto UK spec. Now I'm going for R154 swap because it's way cheaper and I like manual more. BMW transmission or 350Z transmission is also popular 6 speed option. But that depends on the driver. I like my daily driven cars in auto, but I enjoy manual in Supra more. I just don't want to sped like 7k$ on a V160 trans..
@DriversTherapy
@DriversTherapy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience with both transmissions. That gives you an experience-based understanding of both configurations. My NSX is manual and I love it. I have also owned many other manual transmission cars and really enjoy the driver engagement it adds. I can admit that a manual transmission on the Supra would add a level of engagement but since the car is a Grand Touring car, the car in my opinion is equipped more for a grand touring car rather than a sports car and the automatic transmission like the manual transmission fits it well which is cool if you think about how many cars don't do that. Either way, I think it is a personal preference. Thanks again, and I invite you to follow the channel to see more Supra and other cool videos later. Have a great day!

From my personal opinion Supra MKIV is a great car no matter what grade it is. The good thing is that they were available with all kind of equipment, tricks and features as each individual customer wanted. There is no the best or the worse thing here it is just what you actually want with the car? An iconic 90's japanese collection item, a 1000hp+ beast, a track-oriented racecar or occasionally cruise with this beautiful designed machine. I went with TT Auto(tiptronic) and I like it. It suits my needs. Toyota made great automatic transmissions back then and yes, innapropriate comments for automatic transmissions came in most cases from annoying people who even don't know the car or have any knowledge about cars. They just listen&copy what they heard from others and think it sounds right. There is only one thing that every Supra should have from the factory. A turbo! Because it sounds soo good with his straight 6 and chimney piped exhaust ;)

I think the manual snobs are just hating because they can’t have a Supra so they are trying to find something to bash it. I would be more let down by a non turbo Supra then a turbo auto. Besides you could always manual swap it not a big deal. Also something to consider if you have a turbo auto is getting the auto built by Boost Logic or Titan for like $2,500 to $3,000 and completely transform it and not even care about a manual.
@DriversTherapy
@DriversTherapy 3 жыл бұрын
Oh I agree! The Supra auto is a badass car. I was just reading some posts from the UK saying we are one of the few countries who think the turbo auto car is bad. If you wanna see a sweet 7 second built auto Supra, check out the KZbin channel "Baltic Supra". I do know about the Boost Logic and Titan transmissions. I think also "ATF" is a big name company too. Those are some nice setups. Thanks man for watching the videos and taking the time to leave some cool comments.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Automatics, on my project cars I tend to manual swap them (is300 got the R154, E30 got the getrag260), but I've been thinking a lot lately, it is the goal to own a Supra one day, and I've thought hard about it... a BOAT LOAD of money for the V160 or "reasonable" for the Automatic... and truthfully, I'd do very minor mods to it, I think it would be fun just to cruise, go take out for breakfast or late night dinner at a diner, and just sit back and DRIVE the car!

It could be. It is worth a try. I understand where you are coming from as far as the Genesis. I would give it a shot but the Supra, in general, is not going to blow you away in stock form. It is quick but not throw you in your seat quick. We also own a Genesis and love it but comparing the two cars, the Genesis is a couple decades years newer. So mechanically speaking I think the Genesis is just newer but comparing the cars, in general, they are galaxies apart. The Supra is a legend. It is on a whole different planet as far as reputation goes. I can't drive mine a few streets down without people wanting to say hi.

You Tube if the OD was on, the car will try to get to the tallest gear as fast as it can making acceleration slower. With O/D off, It will be faster than what you experienced but not super faster. The only fact is that the 2JZ can be ridiculous fast. So if OEM doesn’t cut it, making it a beast is pretty straight forward.

I've seen a video of Mk4 stock supra doing a 0-60 and I was kinda surprised on how quick at shifting it was like the gear ratios weren't as long as some 4 speeds I wonder how it would respond if it had a 5 speed auto probably won't do any difference 🤔
@DriversTherapy

Hi! The A340E transmission that comes in the Supra is a great transmission and a company named ATF builds them to handle a lot of power. They also can increase shift times but conventional automatic transmission such as the A340E will still be slower than today's dual clutch transmission. I am not if adding a gear would help or not shifting speeds, but it would make a difference in the way the car speeds up.

One of my dreamcar is an automatic Toyota Supra (not the shitty new bmw supra though). I live in a congested city but i want a sports car. So i want a sports car that i can drive easily around the city. Nowadays I easily get exhausted driving a manual car even in a mild traffic l.

dr.motec, I personally do not know but here is a response I found on Supraforums.com: "The physical block is the same as the GTE, the GE does not have the exhaust side turbo oil feeds and does no have the oil squirters. GS300 has a front mount oil pan/sump, you will need to swap this item with the one from your current motor. A 99 GS300 will have a VVT-i engine in it, which means you will need to do a head swap to run your electronics or you will need different electronics. Also the VVT-i connections rods are known to be weaker if you are looking to boost it." -lacrssgus14

The premium people pay for a 6 speed is crazy and as I get older I think automatic might make it easier to live with as a daily driver. @@DriversTherapy absolutely!!! I’ve been a Toyota fan since I got my drivers license. I don’t think they’ve ever made a bad or unreliable car. I had a V6 Camry that I sold with over 450,000 miles on it. As far as I understand it’s still going. The great thing about the Supra is that was back when they overbuilt everything. The 2jz is an absolute legend, beyond the horsepower the car is capable of its a great engine for longevity. I saw a Supra listed for sale once that had 550,000 on the original motor. That’s insane. I’m a huge fan of the 3000GT/300ZX/RX7 but I doubt any of those cars could last 1/4 as long as the Supra. My cousin had a 1994 3000GT VR4 for a while, beautiful car but he had major problems and was constantly working on it. He ended up putting thousands of dollars into it just to keep it running before he finally gave up on it. I felt like the car was way too complicated. All the neat gadgets were always breaking

Sometimes I don’t get this world today. Why is driving automatic a bad thing? “If you drive automatic, you’re a noob” or “ you suck at driving stick.” Why? Because of their fucking assholeness. It’s good to learn how to drive stick, but it’s also good to respect everyone’s car regardless of transmission. A real racer respects everyone’s car regardless of transmission. So i am down to 3 Supra's that i want to purchase. One is Red with Beige interior, VERY LOW mileage, automatic, super clean, one owner, MOST expensive, and its out of state purchase The other is Red with Beige interior, 130K miles, automatic, 6 owners, clean and its the cheapest... also out of state The last one is Baltic Blue, black interior, 6 speed, 120k miles, not as clean as the other 2 cars, 4 owners, 50 miles from me but the price is about $5k from the 1st one guessing because of the 6 speed ... While i don't like RED and i don't like the beige interior ... Someone gave me an idea about how to use the Red and beige together to my advantage to make it look more appealing and when i thought about it, i was like... WOW ... So now i am stuck and can't decide which one i should go for ...
@DriversTherapy
@DriversTherapy 4 жыл бұрын
If it was me and I know it does to coincide with this video but I would pick the Baltic Blue Supra. Before I going into my reasoning I am assuming that paint job on the Baltic Blue is nice. The Baltic Blue paint job is so awesome and if it IS in great shape (zero fading, no bodywork needed, nice clear coat) that alone would make me pick it regardless of the transmission assuming they are all TTs. The second reasoning would be distance. Last year I flew to New York to look at a Porsche 997.1 and ended up not buying it. I assumed which I try not to do, that it would be everything I want and I would drive it home. We ended having to buy a ticket at the last minute which is expensive as you know and ended up losing some money on that experience. If you can buy something locally, you can walk away faster and save travel costs. I like my automatic so the 6-speed is cool but would not be my personal first choice.

@@DriversTherapy well here is the issue i have with the blue one, it has 125k miles on it. Not sure how it was driven, was it abused, was it raced, did they sit in a lot of drive thru's and just heat soak the motor, did they do cold starts and just drive off without letting the motor warm up for like a minute ..?? That car has been driven but it is a 94 so the mileage is expected but that mileage is questionable ... The other one i am looking at has only 25k miles on it, its red, its auto and it has the beige interior, and its $4k more plus ~1k for shipping from there to me ... that is a gamble but how much of a gamble when its clean and mint with only 25k miles ... and only ~$5k more ... its cheaper because its automatic. I am not buying it to make 1000 whp, at some point i will do a single turbo swap and just do about 400 to 500 hp .. I am going this saturday to look at the blue one. I am kinda hesitant because of its mileage but it is blue with black interior and 6 speed. So cosmetically its more appealing but the red one has WAY LESS miles to it.. And the other thing is the targa top vs hardtop. A ~25 yr old car with targa top can pose an issue with leaks when it rains .. that is something im not sure i am prepared to deal with. This blue one is a hard top where the red one is a targa ... So now im stuck again as to which to invest in
@DriversTherapy
@DriversTherapy 4 жыл бұрын
@@ACommenterOnKZbin First off, do not look at it as an investment. Unless you plan to drive the car a few hundred miles a year and it is a show quality Supra. Otherwise, In my opinion, enjoy it and have fun. I have done 4 cross country trips in my Supra and loved it except when I hit snow in summer tires. Let me share with you something someone once told me, it is not about the miles on the car but how it was maintained. Look at the maintenance history and if all of it was followed correctly with documentation, then that is a good car. If they said they did it but can't prove it, walk away from that car. Value-wise, the manual will always be worth more just because of the fanfare but that does not mean you have to pay that premium since the auto is badass. Do not worry about the Targa top, they are made well. Just make sure they have the toolkit and that it is tight. I drove mine across the country making noise because I did not know how to tighten it. You are welcome to email me the cars so I can look at them for you. My email is in the contact info on the channel. Do me a solid too, hit the like buttons on the videos you enjoyed. It helps.

So i just got done test driving a tt auto 93 and all i can say is that i was NOT impressed at all with its lack of power. I can tell you right now my stock genesis coupe 2.0T and my wifes santa fe 2.0T can spank this stock supra. Im not sure if something was wrong with it, but it had shit take off power, and i really didnt feel any turbo power until that 2nd one kicked in around 5k rpm ... From the light i have it about 75% throttle and i was like ...... anytime now... From a 45 mph roll, i gave it 75% throttle and again, it stayed in gear and thats it, it didnt down shift at all so i had to wait for it to build power. The steering wheel had a shake to it, not sure if that was a suspension issue or bad balance on the front tires. It cranked up just fine, no hesistation, no hicups, i reved it to 6k rpm and it was clean and smooth ... I just dont understand, 320 hp ..??? My genesis coupe is 275 hp and when i hit it, ITS MOVES, there is no wait, no question, it downshifts and PULLS HARD.... This car has only 30k miles, original owner, the interior was SPOT CLEAN like it came out of the dealership, it did have an intake filter, it did have a full turbo back exhaust 3 inches, so i dont know why it felt so slow ... for 320hp i was NOT impressed ...
@DriversTherapy
@DriversTherapy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! When you got into the car, did you put the transmission in "O/D" off? Also, the steering wheel shaking can be the alignment, tires or other issues. Honestly, that does not sound like the experience that I had with mine , there can be other factors but I would try testing another one and seeing if you had the same experience. Next time, get in and turn "O/D" on off. The yellow light should be on. Also, if you WOT, which I am assuming the owner was with you, you have to WOT it and not go on/off on the full throttle. The twin turbo setup is very complex and if you WOT on and off when it is switching turbos, you will get a power dip rather than a nice acceleration. Hope that helps.
@ACommenterOnYouTube
@ACommenterOnYouTube 4 жыл бұрын
Im not sure about the OD feature as i didn't look for it, all i know is that it did NOT have the power i was hoping for at all. This supra i didn't feel ANY pull until that 2nd turbo kicked in at ~5k rpm, it honestly felt like V-Tec kicking it at ~5k rpm. I didn't go WOT as the owner was there and he said please be very careful considering the car it was and its MINT condition. So respected that and i didn't go WOT, but i did press that pedal pretty deep from a launch and from a 45 mph roll and neither of those times did i feel any power until that 2nd turbo kicked in, honestly felt like there was NO 1st turbo at all, no pull, just wait for it, wait for it, then 5k rpm.... then the 2nd turbo woke up and it pulled, but it didn't pull very hard. Again, for 320hp TT, i was NOT impressed and the car had a FULL turbo back 3 inch exhaust system with cone filter intake so the turbo's were breathing free with no restriction so again, WHY there was no power beats me. The car was CLEAN and MINT inside and out, just had no power and i don't know why. Then the steering wheel vibration was another thing that got me worried, that can be anything. Those are the 2 reasons why i didn't proceed with the car. Its 90 miles away from me, i'm not going back for a 2nd test drive. And that was the closest TT supra 4 sale around me. Last note, i should NOT have to go WOT or keep WOT to get some descent power from it, thats just retarded. I will keep looking and if the 2nd one is the same, then i don't want it.
@ACommenterOnYouTube

I have a '12 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T with a 5sp Auto, and a lot of the Genesis Coupe community talks crap about the 5 speed autos. The funny thing is, is that the 6sp manuals from all the BK1s (1st gens) and the '13 BK2 model all had problems with gear lockout, roughness, and a few other problems. However, the 5sp autos have had no problems at all other than some slippage on high torque setups at about 300wtq but with no failures I've seen. The trans is really engaging because it has paddle shifters with big, blue, digital gear numbers above the odometer. It goes through all gears sequentially by either pushing the stick forward to go up a gear or pressing the right paddle shifter. It does, however, automatically shift up if you take it to about 6400rpm, but there's a tcu tune SFR released lately that makes it bounce off the limiter until you shift up yourself in sequential mode. There's a half second or less lag from when you press the paddle from where the computer registers you pressed it, but you get really used to it.
