I traded a 2018 Ram 2500 for my 2021 Tacoma TRD Off Road. In my opinion, the Tacoma by far out performs off road than the Ram, interior size and rear seat comfort is where the Ram shines.

I person own a 21 Tacoma TRD OR4x4 in a automatic and have thousands of off road miles on it so far from sand to mud , rock crawling & snow & I would not trade it for any other truck out there , most people DO NOT know that the OFF Rd and the PRO Tacomas share lots of parts with the Hilux , like the 8.75 inch rear diff , spindles , hubs etc. so the OR & the Pro versions are pretty robust built compared to the Sport models and lower …. Good review 👍🏻

I’m actually going to increase my MPG/ L/100km and lower my bill because I’m coming from a Subaru Outback XT that’s lifted and requires premium fuel. Even if I only get 18mpg in my TRD OR access cab I’ll spend less. I’m hoping for 20+ since I drive like a grandma with Honolulu gas prices. Sam’s Club & Costco $4.14-regular & $4.34-premium outside stations are $4.54 & $5.09 respectively and that is the cheaper station brand. National stations are a few cents more expensive. I am picking up a 2023 TRD Off Road 4x4 Access Cab on Saturday Jan 27th since it’s the last of the Access Cab style xtra cab. Plus I like the look better than the DCSB/DCLB.

I owned a 2012 Tacoma TRD Off-Road for 6 years and 120k miles (4.0L V6, 5 speed auto) before jumping into Rams. I did a ton of off-roading including Hell Revenge in Moab, etc, so they are capable. The A-TRAC did help the front end with no locker. The only consideration is size which is good/bad. Lacking bed space, cabin space, and towing but they're pretty lightweight so if you don't need the capacity of a larger truck they're a great choice.
@TheGettyAdventures

you nailed it on the head. if you don't actually need a truck to do truck things then this is a great option. obviously you could tow some sleds or atv's but I wouldn't be wanting to tow camper trailers with this tacoma.

It was sold already and they had it hidden in the back but the buyer had gone out the country and lost his truck so I scooped it up. went from a 21 Honda civic hatchback sport to the Tacoma trd off road. The Tacoma is NOT a "heavy duty" vehicle. Heavy duty is 3/4 ton and up. That means Ram or Chevy or GMC 2500/3500, or Ford F-250/F-350 or above. This is a LIGHT DUTY vehicle i.e. half ton. It's equivalent to Ram or Chevy 1500/Ford F-150. If you're confused look at other auto makers naming, Chevy/GMC even has HD in the name for 2500/3500 but there is no HD in the name for 1500.

the Tacoma is a mid sized truck. what i was getting at is the payload numbers. Technically this Tacoma can put more payload in it then my Ram 2500 Power Wagon. having an HD truck means nothing. for example most HD trucks have a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 10,000 lbs. but if the HD truck weighs 8,500 lbs then you can only have 1,500 lbs of payload. Yes the truck is bigger and stronger and the axles are tougher. but you can still only have 1,500 lbs of added payload before you are overloaded. where as the Tacoma may have a max GVW of 6,000 lbs but it only weighs 4,460 lbs. meaning that you can but 1,540lbs of payload in the truck. resulting in a higher payload. yes the truck is not as "heavy duty" but it can handle more payload.

I love my 2017 tacoma sr it came with alot of stuff more than i expected power wingows door locks itself a 4×4 witch comes in handy during new england winter storms it feels like the truck is stuck to the road even when the roads get covered with ice even though it's a four cylinder it has a 5 speed manual witch helps alot when building up speed for the highway plus the pedal commander made a very noticeable difference i was looking for the base model that was 28000 at the time but i ended up getting and upgrade and they charged the same for it's white but mine doesn't have the black front end i got the two fold up seats that aren't very comfortable they will do in a pinch on a short ride and the extra cab had the 6 foot bed and i see that the fourth gen doesn't have the suicide doors in the back it's so easy putting shopping in the back rather than moving the seats up plus the 17 sr had two of the full bins in the bed after almost 7 years its only got 31000 miles on it and it's paid for plus the sr is one of the best tacomas to mod out i added quite a few useful things in it and the 24s are close to 40000 for a 2 wheel drive sr so i think this truck will be around when I'm gone.

If one is bashing those skid plates in a stock truck then one is in a place they shouldn't be and that is driver judgement. Heavy skid plates add weight and impact fuel efficiency and payload and that is a detriment to most uses for no gain.

I have never owned a truck and lived in an area that snows. Is it a pain to have to clean out the bed full of snow from leaving it outside or is it a good idea to by a bed cover for that issue?

Also worth mentioning here is that 3.5L in that Tacoma is a 6 bolt main your power wagon is a 4 bolt main ,love the power wagon don’t get me wrong and also 3.5 in the Tacoma is a high compression motor 11.6:1 to be exact and definitely runs better and gets the most performance out of that motor when using 91+ octane from my experience after switching from 87 octane the truck just lived up it became more responsive and my fuel mileage went up , having said all this the motor is way detuned , and can handle a lot more power , throwing a super charger on it wouldn’t hurt it a bit , as the Lotus sports car barrows this same exact motor from Toyota and puts out 400+ HP , that motor is bullet proof , love the review good work bud

Just a thought on your comment about payload weight…your power wagon most likely has a steel bed sitting back there. That Tacoma has a composite bed. So ya the power wagon has a shit ton MORE payload, it’s just already taken up by the empty bed.
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
didn't know that. and ya thats what I figured the PW is already such a heavy truck it kind of kills the payload whereas the Tacoma is just a lighter truck and therefore allows more weight.

Love the Tacoma … but hate how limited the models and options are . Like having to get the short box to get the off road goodies. Another thing that’s completely insane .. you cannot get the trd off road model with the 4 door cab in a manual transmission. Like what ? I want a less optioned SR5 long box, with a manual transmission and a locking rear diff . But that’s not available. It’s a shame .

It's an okay midsize truck. My only problem with them is, some people not all, ride the high horse pretty high about them where I live. They are a rough ride and have no room, not sure why it has been deemed as so superior. Depreciation is the only superior part about them IMO. I think I would rather a Ranger. More room in the cab and better bottom end torque, also a deeper frame. Rangers towing capacity is 7500 lbs. The internet is just swamped with Toyota fan boys and they don't sell that many trucks. I think the old Corolla drivers must get online and chirp. Now the new Tundra from an engineering/mechanical standpoint is superior to others on the market, different story there. Credit where credit is due.

great comment! love the honesty, and I would agree there is some folklore around these trucks that may over hype them. I will agree the interiors are very basic for how expensive they are, it's also pretty loud when driving and the ride was rougher then I expected. I did think my Power Wagon would mop the floor with this tacoma but it actually held it's own very well. That video should be coming out tomorrow!

I don't own any of these trucks but from sitting in several of the trucks and positioning the seats to where they were comfortable for me and sitting in the different seats I'd have to say the ranger was the smallest inside, the only thing it had more of was head space, but felt much more narrow and less knee room in the back. The Colorado was a little better than the ranger but still felt more narrow than the tacoma witch yes had less head room and dose have a different seat feel. But I don't mind ether way because I'm used to driving what ever get's me from here to there, usually old work trucks or cheep used vehicles and comfort usually being secondary. Also I might have miss understood where you said they don't sell that many trucks but I'm pretty sure I saw information on midsize trucks sold and the tacoma sold as much as the next three competitors combined but I might not have understood what you meant and that just my experience, by no means law.
@peiguy1982
@peiguy1982 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinjust6740 Disagree the new Ranger is not small inside, I test drove one. Plus you don't hit your head on the A pillar like you do in the Taco. I'm 6'1 and headroom is not a problem and you don't sit on the floor of the thing either. It's the international platform and that is a heavy frame for a 1/4 ton. Toyota sells 60-70k Tundra's and 150k Tacos. Ford and GM sell nearly 1 million pickups a year and Ram is 600 to 700k. So nearly everything you called me out on you're wrong about. I'm sure in the next gen Tacoma will correct all these things, ride, fuel economy, cabin room. Then all you fan boys will wonder why you spent all these years on the internet tapping the keys. That's sure what they did with the Tundra.

@@peiguy1982 Lol well like i said i don't own any of these trucks so calling me a fan boy don't really mean nothing but you seem alittle defensive about it. I was just giving my opinion about how it felt for me someone 6' who sat in and tested these and the ford for me was like holding hands with the person next to me but obviously you feel different, like i said it don't matter to me. But i was specifically talking about midsize trucks not the whole line of vehicles or trucks. And not that BS that ford puts out about being they're F series being the best selling truck when they don't tell you that they classify all they're trucks, even the semi trucks they make F series. So from my dealings with fords and working in several of they're factories and dealing with people that work there i'd personally never own one, so i'm not so much a toyota fan as much as don't trust or care for ford fan i guess. But i still say of the trucks in the midsize class it feels the most narrow to me, but yes does have more head room and in the end to each his own as long as the owner is happy with it what does it matter.
