I review my 2022 RAM 2500 Power Wagon off road 4wd performance in deep snow against a Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road Package. First I drive the Tacoma off road in the snow and show how capable it is in 4wd and 4wd low. I also show you the TRD locking differential and give you my opinion on the Crawl mode. then I take my RAM Power Wagon on the same road and see if it will out perform the smaller truck with all it's off road capabilities and performance. I end up using my winch to beat the Tacoma.

So first I take the very capable Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road up this snowy hill. I start in 2wd for fun and don't get very far. So I switched in 4wd high for a little bit but as I approached the difficult part of the hill with deep snow I want to lock the rear differential on this Tacoma TRD. and in order to do that you need to be 4wd low. So for the rest of the run I was 4wd low with the rear diff locked up.
I was very surprised with how well this Toyota Tacoma TRD off road did, this truck is very capable off road and performed beyond my expectations. I think any potential buying of this truck would be very happy with it's off road performance and would be confident taking this Tacoma almost anywhere!
The only thing I did not like was the crawl mode. It in fact actually got me stuck which is exactly the opposite of what it is supposed to do. Maybe for snow crawl control is not the best option!
I could not let the Tacoma TRD out performed my wonderful RAM 2500 Power Wagon so I brought out the girl once against to see if it's off road capabilities were enough to out due the impressive Tacoma. I know for a fact that the power wagon is more capable on paper but the real world is always a different story and this would be a great 4wd test between the two trucks. The power wagon has the ability to fully lock up the front diff which the TRD off road does not. it also has a very handy which! however this truck is much much heavier then the Tacoma and in deep snow I thought this could be a problem.
a lighter truck like the Tacoma can simply float over top of deep snow when in 4wd vs falling into the snow and sinking the truck right to the axles. As you guys saw it was actually pretty even. both truck ended up in the same place. although the Power Wagon front diff was not locking up and I broke out the winch for the victory!
Hope you guys enjoyed the video!

I own a Tacoma TRD Off Road with crawl control and there are different settings for terrain selections mud, sand, snow etc.. you can't just push crawl and hope for the best. You have to select the right terrain settings. The center nob or dial for crawl control allows you to select its wheel speed or crawl intensity so you would have been able to slow the wheel spin down for better traction. I can guarantee that Tacoma can make it up that hill in the snow. A lot of people don't read up on how to use crawl control correctly and say it's trash when it fails. You should give it another chance.

@@roach182008 Absolutely. I've done the same with momentum with my automatic. Alot of people do comparisons with the Tacoma but yet don't own one and not even give them a fare chance and end up giving Tacoma's a bad rep. Also people always compare the Tacoma to the F150 or RAM when it's not even in the same class. Go grab a Tundra then compare it or go grab the Ranger, Canyon, Colorado, Frontier or Ridgeline which is a minivan with a bed on it put that up against the Tacoma.

Would've been interesting to see the Tacoma go up the hill with the same momentum the power wagon had at the 11 minute mark. I've learned that crawl control is a lot more helpful in getting unstuck in loose dirt/gravel/sand than mud or snow which is when I've needed it more.

I honestly just started off slow in the Tacoma and it just kept driving up so I just kept going nice and slow. when I got the Tacoma finally stuck and tried crawl control and got even more stuck I ended up digging myself out for a good 20 minutes. I could of gave it a good with more speed but it seemed like no matter what the truck was going to sink. but ya kind of disappointed in the crawl control performance in the snow. it actually got me really really stuck lol

And 2 crawl control is really bad in the snow but amazing in just about any other scenario. Plus if you use crawl control I recommend disabling the rear locker. Crawl control wants to have independent control over each wheel and it can't do that with the locker. Thanks for making this.

Manual locking hubs and floor lever for transfer case. I had an old hilux with a 4cyl and 410 gears and 33inch super swampers and I went snow wheeling and blasted up a 100 yard really steep hill not thinking. Dunno what you had on there, but the Wranglers my trd-or came with were not severe snow rated. That makes a huge difference. I'd like to see that again with some good all-purpose tires like Scorpions or Duratracs - or even dedicated winter tires. There is definitely something to be said for lightweight vehicles. The only thing that stops my Evo w/ Blizzaks is falling through the crust and getting high centered. When that happens, I shove snow out from under it to get the tires back in contact with the road, build a little snow ramp, and launch back on top of the crust. You can ski across up there as long as you don't pucker and lift.

I have never had much luck with my Power Wagon in the snow. Like you said, it’s just too heavy. I’ve been stuck so many times that I just don’t go off road in the snow unless I go with 2 or 3 other trucks or jeeps. I also had difficulty locking the front diff. I took it to the dealer to have it checked. I was never told what they did, but now it locks quicker than when it was new. Now, if I don’t do any off-roading for a while, I will just lock both axles every once in a while to kind of “exercise” them,and now they will always lock when I need it.

Either truck will make it up that hill easy if you just put chains or cables on the tires. No need for a winch, that is a hell of a hill. I used to live in West Virginia and had to go up pretty steep grades all the time to visit family and friends, chains and cables are your best friend. The 4wd system on these vehicles is top notch you just need to add more traction to the tires and you're good to go! Good job on the video brother.

Diffs require some movement to lock. Don't know if there is any rhyme or reason sometimes. Some of the 8x8 trucks I drove in the military were quirky. They all behaved differently. One would only lock while moving in reverse, one while moving forward, one by just turning the wheels. Always just had to play with em.

I have a 21 power wagon and it’s a common thing for the lockers to be a bit of a pain in the butt to get to lock up it even talks about it in the owner’s manual. I watched a video of a guy who changed out his gear oil and showed the filings on the magnets cleaned it up and said it helped with the lockers working faster and better apparently you get a lot of metal shavings on the new gears setting in place. The more you use them the better it will start working is what most guys say.

Air down to 32 PSI, use only the 1st and 2nd gear. Gain much momentum and more speed at the bottom. Have to delicately use the 1st gear, with the gas pedal to the floor, at the near top of the ridge. Went through two ft of snow at 40 MPH and so don't stop unless you are on flat ground or half ft of snow. Keep on going. Want to zig zag left to right under 15MPH, you'll feel it start to stop, sling ot felt and right and hard gas, low gas, hard gas, low gas. Tire pressure down 1st to 18 PSI, last resort-15 PSI male the tires flap like and arm. I drove the Z28 Camaro at 7 PSI tires meant for racing. Flapped the flaps like a ducks wing against the ground. Flapping effect smacks the ground like a wooden paddle. Paddle the truck or car where you need to go. Don't stop flapping the tires until you get where you need to be at. Don't bury the tires by gassing them straight up a line like in a video. You'll bury the vehicle. Cameron do 3 ft of snow this way. Mazda 6 did 4 ft of snow 7 PSI. Can lose the bead and tire pressure completely. I had electric pump all the time. AIR!

😊Unfair test. You need instruction in driving in snow. You need to increase your speed and stayinthe throttle. You have to be in 4Low to get all diffs locked. Not to mention 37 inch MudTerrains. Using all of this will have your PW skimming up the hill.
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures Жыл бұрын
Highly doubt it. 4 low in the PW is an extremely high final drive ratio which gives zero wheel speed, great for technical stuff, terrible for deep snow and mud. In snow like this you want wheel speed. wider tires would help I'll give you that.

400 lbs of sand bags in the rear of the Taco would have taken you to the top of the hill with no sweat. Any pickup, even with a rear locker, is at a major disadvantage in snow.

Zero chance it will make it. I love Subaru's don't get me wrong but the camera never does this justice how deep and how steep this hill really is. I put chains on my power wagon one time with both diffs locked in 4wd low and it wouldn't climb it. the ONLY way the sabaru might make it is because of how light it is and won't sink into the snow. you would also need some great snow tires.
@bitzongaustralia718

@@TheGettyAdventures Yeah it looks flat from the video. I can see how any car will find it challenging if it is steep. Well if you have a chance plz give the Subaru with X-mode a shot. Maybe like you said, the lighter weight and snow tires might cut it. Will be interesting to see. Maybe try it together with the Jimny!

I think that airing down is detrimental in the snow, since you want the treads to dig in as far as possible. That's why skinnier tires supposedly do better in snow.

Power Wagon's tires are too wide for the snow. Need tall and skinny. Interco sells a 33x9.5 and a 35x10. Both would perform better than the 285/70r17 that comes stock. I have a 73 Power Wagon with open diffs and 235/85r16 and out perform my 22 Power Wagon in the snow all day. As far as the locker engagement it depends on the axle positioning so give yourself about 10ft forward and reverse to get a full revolution of the tire.
@TheGettyAdventures
@TheGettyAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
I mean yes and no. on the road yes thinner tires will give you better control. which is why snow tires generally come thinner. but in this situation when there is no bottom to the snow you want a nice wide tire that can help the truck float on the snow instead of sinking to the axles. and ya off camera I was rocking the truck back forth for a good 2-3 minutes which no luck. so she going into the dealer lol

Few things wrong with this comparison. One different size and brand tires. 2 whichever vehicle goes second is going to have a better shot as the snow is packed. 3 the truck with more ass weight is going to get better traction. 4 no one drives in deep snow like they are actively trying to get stuck. 5 you could put a winch on literally anything, and doesn’t say anything about dodge or yota 6 you didn’t air down. I’ve taken my truck through 2-3 feet of snow in 4lo with the diff locked tires at 15 psi at 12k feet elevation, no slipping. Lockers make a huge difference. Not an off-road test my dude 😂 This is how you drive a stock yota in the snow kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXSsZWapatpgg6M
