Toyota Track Battle: How fast is the Corolla GR Sport?

How fast is the Toyota Corolla GR Sport? To answer this question an impressive group was assembled at the challenging Anglesey Circuit in Wales, featuring a new Corolla GR Sport hatchback pitched as the protagonist in a series of lap battles between two generations of road and race Corolla models.
The hybrid GR Sport was put up against a 1987 AE86 Corolla GT Coupe, the BTCC Championship winning AE86 Corolla GT Coupe race car from 1987, and the 2021 Toyota Gazoo Racing UK Corolla touring car,
Overseeing the showdown was the high-performing Toyota Gazoo Racing UK touring car team, with drivers Rory Butcher, Sam Smelt and Scott McKenna as well as team principal Christian Dick getting behind the wheel.

The Corolla GR Sport is not the modern equivalent of the AE86. For a start, Corolla GR Sport is a front-wheel drive hybrid family hatchback. Actually, GT86 was the spiritual successor to AE86. It is rear-wheel drive, has a high-revving naturally aspirated front-mounted engine and is relatively light weight too, with a focus on handling and raw driver thrills. GR86 will continue this legacy.

Since we apparently dont get the Corolla GR Sport in the US, (will be getting the awesome GR Corolla soon though) does it have more power than a standard Corolla 2.0l 4cyl? My second car ever was an '85 Corolla GTS, really cool to see them still being used in competition😎

it's not a GR Corolla, it's a Corolla GR sport. It's mostly trim and some suspension, no extra power. The GR Corolla will be different animal.

@@toyotauk finally that i have the attention of Toyota themselves why not it would be such a smart business move because there's a lot of demand and if there's a provider for that demand the provider will have huge profit for said demand and people love the AE86 why not bring it back as the classic it was since yes the current 1980's 86's will lose value but you can make way more profit off it and people will love it Also im 13 by the time i grow up an AE86 will be unbelievable expensive and rare and if i find one probably for an insane price like $100,000 because they already sell for $40,000

We did bring it back, with the GT86 and now the GR86. Front engine, rear wheel drive, coupe, high-revving naturally aspirated four cylinder engine, manual transmission, relatively light weight, maximum driver involvement 👍

How is the GR Corolla different from the normal Corolla Hybrid Hatchback with the 2L machine that came out 3-4 years ago? Isn’t it the exact same car only with different optics??

Hi Joel. GR Sport is a trim level, with visual upgrades; it's not a performance car. Other manufacturers have been selling sporty looking cars without additional performance for years, and they are very popular. We want some of that action, hence GR Sport. 'GR' models are the performance ones, like GR Yaris. We have no information about a GR Corolla at this time though, sorry!

We're not saying the Corolla GR Sport is more fun to drive or 'better' than the AE86, it just shows that a much heavier modern hybrid family hatchback can be just as fast around a track as a sports car from the 80s. Is the Corolla GR Sport more fun to drive though? You be the judge 😉
