Excellent diagnosis. Good video. You are an excellent technician, do not give away your work. You even stated the hose connection disintegrated over time, you did not brake it, you saved the owner from another future. failure. use the correct explanation and charge for this needed repair. You didn't need this extra work. keep going don't give these things away, because you think they might think you caused the problem. Keep going and alway's get payed.

I'm happy to see you use the Autel. I finally got one a while back (really cheap--$225) and then all my YT heros switched to the OTC. Go figure. I've really liked the Autel so far, though, and the price was definitely right. Sorry, Ivan but I laughed pretty hard when that bolt fell into the funnel and noticed the funnel filling up quick! I'm so glad to see someone else make messes no matter how well they plan. Glad it's not just me!

Before removing the pan drain plug, back the plug out about half way and use a piece of string to tie a noose around the plug. That way you can grab the plug and prevent it from falling into the funnel or oil pan.

the customer should pay for the coolant adapter you broke as a courtesy for saving them so much money on not replacing the transmission and the piece of mind that they can trust you fixing their car right the first time. Good job!

I wouldn't be surprised if they payed for it. In my experience most customers will insist on covering the cost when you let them know something like that happened. Especially after you properly fixed their problem for a lot cheaper than someone else quoted.

I've tried the funnel under the drain plug thing a couple times and "failed" each time. ( slow learner) . Now I just let it drain into a pan and then pour the contents into a jug to measure how much. Way cleaner however the swear jar is just a bit emptier. Probably would have made up that short fall breaking that plastic POS nipple though. I was betting that you would have got that solenoid "NEARLY" all the way out and found you had to drop the valve body. SCORE ! WIN ! Thanks for the video.

Good diagnostic finding the correct shift solenoid, but once you have the pan off that is the perfect time to drop and replace the trans filter. Also there are magnets in the bottom of the pan that could have easily been cleaned before slapping the pan back on.

Great video Ivan, now I see even professionals have these oil spills...lol, one time I tried to use a plastic storage bag around the Toyota (Tundra) Oil Filter as I was removing to avoid oil spillage. Sure enough the storage bag fell off the oil filter canister and created a mess on the garage floor. Sometimes you just can't win. Thanks again !!.

You know its a double edged sword with Toyota and Honda parts. They're good, but expensive. I tend to fix the ones i maintain with junkyard parts where its practical. They still have more life than the car in most cases. A lot of Toyota vehicles take that long life pink fluid in the Euro market now. You buy it pre diluted. Good stuff though. Nice fix. All set for another 100,000 miles.

I admire your tenacity figuring out the root cause of the symptoms/problems. Especially on cars with 150K+ mikes. I wonder though, if you have seen GM's 'new' 8-pin MAF sensor. Here's a portion of a TECH LINK article. "Beginning with the 2012 model year, a new 8-pin Mass Air Flow (MAF), Humidity, Barometer (BARO) and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) 1 & 2 sensor is being used on some gasoline engines. There are two suppliers of the 8-pin sensor, Bosch and Hitachi. The Hitachi sensor is used on most of the applications at this time. The sensors are also known as the Multifunction Intake Air sensor or mini-weather station sensor. The new sensor measures the intake air’s humidity. A second air temperature sensor is housed in the assembly to accurately measure the air temperature at or very near the humidity sensor. The ECM uses the air temperature to calculate the air humidity, which is displayed by the scan tool as Intake Air Humidity (%). The signal is transmitted on the circuit as duty cycle (%). The intake air temperature sensor 2 is transmitted to the ECM as a frequency (Hz), on the same circuit as the humidity signal. The scan tool displays the IAT sensor 2 in degrees (°C /°F) and frequency (Hz). I have a 1996 Cherokee with the AW4, which is essentially a Toyota transmission. I recently had to replace all 3 shift solenoids it had because they all tested out of spec after some funky highway shifting. Wasn't as easy to drop the pan cause the exhaust runs over 1/4 of the bolts, but it got done and it shifts beautifully now :)

Don't feel bad I did the exact same thing with a transfer case plug. I found its easier to catch it in a oil drain catch pan with a spout and transfer it into a bottle to measure later

Hey good fix. Man cant believe the trans shop wanted to replace the whole transmission over a bad solenoid, what a bunch of scammers. Your customer should go that shop and make a big fuss, and tell them what a bunch of shitbag scammers they are. I mean it is not like that shop couldn't pull the same code you did, and could not do a few simple tests, just as it says to do in the service information. Anyway, sucks about the trans fluid all over your shop floor. Nice video.

Distinct lack of brake clean, but otherwise a good repair. You and Eric should have a 'plastic components not covered' clause for vehicles older than 5 years or somesuch. Customers should be happy things snap when you touch them in the shop, rather than it happening while they're going down the road.

I only use factory parts on anything I touch. With few exceptions. If you are buying dealer parts on a regular basis, and the parts guys get to know you as a regular, don't be afraid to ask for a discount. They will set up an account for you and give you a discount. Chris

Actually Ivan there is a pretty safe way of doing what you actually wanted to do. There is a drain pan you can look over on Amazon. This is the link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JJ63QF2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This was recommended by Brian's Mobile and what I like about it is that you use it as a conventional drain pan but it has a pour spout that works great at pouring the oil into a jug like you were trying to do to measure it. I use Super Clean in a spray gun (well you are talking to Denny here) to clean it up (great water based oil remover available at WalMart dirt cheap. Only takes a minute and the pan is big enough to cover both the oil and the filter during an oil change.

Toyota has no recommended filter change interval. My Toyota dealer didn't even stock one. I bought one from a part's store, but it even appeared inferior.

Its a screen filter. They dont really clog unless something in the trans breaks and drops pieces into the pan

Trans filter on many Toyota transmissions is really just a screen, not essential to change. Think Eric O did a Camry trans change video and said the same thing.

My buddy had an 03 Matrix that I recently bought from him. Last year he got a P0420 code in it. Took it to a Toyota dealership and they immediately told him he needed a new cat, $1000 to replace. He declined. He moved to Washington soon after, drove that car there and not long after leaving, the light went out. He bought a new car a few months later. I flew out there in December, and halfway thru my drive back to Colo, the light came back on. Once I got home I did some research and found that the conditions for the oxygen sensors to set off that code were set a little too tight. It was Toyota's fault. The PCM needed reprogramming with less strict conditions. I erased the code, drove a couple hundred miles to set the emissions monitors (all became ready except Catalyst), and took the car to an emissions testing facility. The car passed with flying colors. What bothers me is the stealership insisted he needed a new cat instead of telling him that the PCM needed to be reprogrammed.

Had a similar problem with 2 of my Saturn's..........went to Autozone for a free code read and they told me to replace the transmission when all it was ....a solenoid ....they have 5 of them but are all interchangable...

I know there are transmission shop ripoffs just like any other business but in their defense with the mileage and the color of the old fluid they might have been covering their butts by recommending a complete rebuild. I hope you explained to your customer that something else could fail in the future that has nothing to do with your repair.

We all been there with tranny fluid spilling out of control. Working without a lift on a concrete floor is hard core. So Ivan how long did it take to clean up Toyota Lake Baikal? Darn, $230 for shift solenoid 35230-52021 - your local Toyota dealer is a real steal'er!! Elsewhere, the same OE part can be had for $155 to 170, but you have to wait for it to be shipped.

those take the super long life pink coolant. that radiator cap was shot, time for new one. those tees for coolant are really sensitive, broke those the same way before few times.

The new coolant pipe seemed to be reinforced and made of a more resilient plastic. Time will tell!

Have you seen the color of that old ATF? No wonder why the solenoid got stuck, that's why I regularly change my ATF. I would have also changed the filter while I'm in there.

Solenoid didn't get physically stuck, it was just an open circuit! Nothing to do with ATF, but a flush once in a while is still a good idea :)

It's possible that the coil burn out because it's stuck physically. Had that once on an '94 Renault 19 (Eurotrash...) Thanks for the reply btw ;)
