hey mustie. im a plumber i have several pipe threading oilers. after years of use rain etc the rust pinholes in the pot. i clean them and i spray truck bed liner all in the pot after i epoxy them. now 6 years later there still in use. you should spray your tundra differential cover with that it will never leak or rust again

Thats the same truck as mine, upstate NY. Toyota replaced the frame for free... a mechanic at Toyota put his fist through my frame and it didn't pass NYS inspection. My diff cover was leaking so as you did welded patches but it just started to leak in a new spot. I bought an after market off road replacement cover, cut the old off and welded the new one on.

Man, I would send this video to the knuckleheads at Toyota to show them how bad an idea that was spraying undercoating to cover up the real frame issue. I give you credit for taking on such a major repair like this. 👍

Quick tip for the disconnected brake lines; wedge something against the brake pedal slightly and it will stop all the fluid. Just something enough to get the lights to come on, bit of light pressure. I've rested my car toolbox against the pedal for hours before, never had to worry about the master running dry.

Yep, just enough to get the piston past the port in the master.

Do you rest something against brake pedal before disconnecting line or after. So this is suppose to keep fluid from draining right.

It works. The primary piston moves past the compensation port and it will NOT leak out.

I scored a couple of plugs that have a female on one end and male on the other. I can't quite recall the size but it works awesome just screw the brake line right into it. Puts the brakes on the brake fluid and helps with possible air getting into the system

i worked for a mechanic when i was in my early20s. he built rear ends for drag cars. you need to measure the back lash from the pinion. 7k to 10k was standard. but then you have to shim it correctly then use a dab of paste like tooth paste. need the smudge to be shape of a perfect bullet shape. it is most definitely an art. great video. cheers

"Blueprinting" a chuck is tedious and time consuming and you need all the shims in various thicknesses, on hand, to pull it off. I know you could do it. But, it is only practical if you have a setup to do it all the time. That is a full time job in itself. You made the right choice. You are Master!!

I just do an oil undercoat spring and fall.. Never had a rust issue with a car yet. I'll drive it up and down a dirt road a few times. The dirt covers the oil coating. Don't know if this works any better, but it was a bit of wisdom passed on from my father that I've never forgotten.

Enjoyed the video and the comments, all very helpful! A relative in the salty Midwest just gave me a Tundra with MAJOR rust problems. The frame had already been replaced by Toyota but the dealer bolted many severely rusted pieces right back onto that new chassis. I'm doing triage on it right now, trying to decide what can be scraped and painted and what has to be replaced. I think the frame will make it but various connectors, bearings, bolts, cables, springs etc. are in really bad shape. Have already removed the corroded rear bumper and support/hitch. I think a needle scaler is in my future, and some metal prep, rust reformer and paint. Should be quite a project.

Hey Mustie... In NY... I use a coat of JB Weld to fix oil pans and cracked blocks.... The grey 48 hour stuff.... The trick is surface prep.. To bridge large holes use a small piece of aluminum tape. ATF is the best undercoat.. Chevy's rot just as bad...

I live in a simular climate as Mustie (Norway) with road salting an moistness, and from what I have experienced all car makes suffer from this kind of rust. I've owned WV, Audi, Peugot, Citron, Opel, Fiat and Toyota they all quickly rust like that no difference. It's more down to models and production years and what the companies tries to smear underneath a certain year. They experiment a lot with this it seems. I'm planning on using oil next time though as this was a very eyeopening video Mustie, thanks.

I'm 73 and remember when undercoating was an option that was added to new cars at dealership, however these "new" cars sometimes sat in the mfg's parking lots for weeks and had surface rust on non painted bare metal, namely frame components. Applying undercoat over rust just seals in the rust, holds moisture, etc.

You should REALLY bring that back to Toyota for another inspection. I bought a 2007 last year and looked at almost 50 of them with varying degrees of undercarriage rust. That amount of rust damage would be replaced by the dealer. ALSO, your rear differential would have been replaced. I saw some that were replaced, and the dealers thought buyers didn't understand that Toyota had done that for FREE. EVERYTHING was free, even the fluids. Trucks for sale in northern New England were $1500-$3000 less than those in NJ and south because of the rusting. Maine uses a salt/sand mixture that makes it safer, but also sandblasts your entire undercarriage. You're correct about undercoating and continuation of rust. Even on new cars. In 1977 I bought a new Corolla and my brother bought a new Dodge Colt. Mine received undercoating from the factory to prevent rust in shipment over the ocean, the Colt had undercoating put on from the dealer. In 5 years his was a rust bucket, while mine had no rust anywhere.

I went through all this too. Charcoal gray 2004 Tundra. Take off the truck bed, use a needle gun to blast the rust off, and coat it with marine grade red lead primer. You can't get the inside of the beams, but you'll add another 6 years to the frame. Long enough to sell it without feeling bad.

Seeing all that rust behind the "protective" coating makes you want to grab a Toyota engineer and show him how great their "fix" is. Then again, he'd probably blame the dealer for some kind of mis-application error.
@neil6212
@neil6212 5 жыл бұрын
Wow! I can't believe that Toyota used such thin steel in the frame and rear axle housing, then didn't even give it a good coat of paint at the factory! And yes, the "fix" really was aquick coat of magic elixir, did more harm than good, but probably got it through the warranty. At the time, Toyota apparently didn't quite have a grasp on how Americans used their pickup trucks, and what was expected. The half ton pickup is probably the most overloaded and overworked vehicle made...or, it is simply used as a car.

That's awesome you got the rear diff back together. And for only 50 bucks in parts!!! Truly an incredible score. Well done!! I fear for the body on my truck on upcoming winter here in Michigan. It's a G.M. so the frame is good, but the body is going fast. . . Drivers quarter panel is already gone. Michigan has started using a salt brine that they put out before a storm. I honestly think it is stronger than the pellets they spread causing the vehicles to rust faster. Keep up the good work! -Nick.

You really lucked in on that diff, the pinion seal went bad on my truck. It was $1000 for new bearings, race, axle, pinion seals and fluids. The fine tuning of the shims scared me off from doing it myself and the fact I don't have a garage or a driveway for that matter. My brother's ranger locked up on the highway when the diff shit the bed its no joke when they fail.

My first super beetle back in the 80's had a bitumen type undercoat from new. When I restored her in the late 90's I removed it to check for rot and found perfectly preserved heater channels and floor. We also have winter salted roads in the UK so it did an amazing job. I decided to go with a thick epoxy paint on my current bug and see how that holds up.

Watching you on this Tundra makes me nervous about mine. What going on under her? Well, she's a beaut from 2001(original owner I am) and only 160K miles. 2 years ago she got a new frame courtesy of Toyota. They did not say there was anything scary so I hop I got many more years with her. She's never let me down. Even original battery lasted 13 years! Sure, I am fighting some rust but nothing major. I live in Philly so we do have salt on the roads but prolly nothing like you guys.

Good to see you taking on a project and sharing it. I wish you the best with that truck. I've heard of the frame rust issues from the 1st gen Tundras and was skeptical as I had a 2002 Sequoia and never had an issue. However, a good friend of mine recently bought a truck like yours and he's showed me the frame rust on it. I have lived in the south so we don't have the same exposure you do but, this truck he has spent some time up north. I've heard they fixed the issue with the 2nd gen Tundras, and I'm hoping that's true as I'm on my second one, a 2016. I recently took off the bumpers, sanded, cleaned, primed them and then put undercoating on the inside of them. I also put primer and bedcoating on the outside. So I was glad to hear you say maybe if you put it on before the rust starts while it's new; which is the case. I'm disappointed in Toyota spraying over rusted frames. That's just idiotic. But, I guess every vehicle up there gets rust; some just more than others.

The shit he was picking off was toyota’s fix for the recall.. its their goodnuff undercoating. Nice job as usual. It must be planned obselesence on the part of auto manufacturers to do so little development of frames able to drain fully, e-coat and then a sealer when new, polymer rockers and fenders, etc. They think we all live on the equator. Good job. That's a bargain.

If you clean off all rust dust and moisture before and thin down and use the black jack warm it does ok and will last but it will flake and needs to be maintained. Most do not do this and see it as a quick cheap tidy and then sell the vehicle, new owner buys and never looks again. Been using waxoi and it is ok but i have 40 litres of chain oil and will give it a go. Thanks for the tip

Hi, great videos, I've been binge watching. You do great work. I just wanted to point out, you've used Permatex The right Stuff regularly, but you're using it incorrectly. You always apply, let sit for 5 minutes, assemble loosely, let sit, then do final assembly. You're supposed to assemble within 5 minutes of application. In some situations, letting it set up before assembly will keep the parts from sealing. From the Permatex website: DIRECTIONS: Clean and dry parts. Push nozzle to dispense the Right Stuff®. Apply a continuous 1/8″ to 1/4″ bead to one surface, surrounding all bolt holes. Assemble parts within five minutes, tightening bolts to recommended torque levels. Material will fill any surface imperfection. Equipment can be returned to service immediately. To reuse package, leave a 1/2″ length of material extending out of the nozzle. Cured material will form a protective plug. To reuse, carefully remove the plug and dispense as before.

I can recommend a product like Tectyl ML, is is very thin and penetrating when sprayed on, and forms a rust inhibiting, slightly elastic amber coloured layer. Also very suitable to spray into hollow forms such as suspension bars under the doors (using the tube provided on some products). There is also a compound with the same stuff protecting against rust, but in a black rubber/tar like form, where the surface is exposed to impacting gravel and rocks. Some car brands used it on every new car in the nineties and early 21st century, before aluminium car parts and fully electrolysed bodies. Toyota apparently did not on your Tundra ;-)

On my Toyota Tacoma I took a long air nozzle and blew as much dirt and rust out of the frame rails as I could. And now I’m gonna weld some patches over the holes. And then I’m gonna oil the daylights out of it. I’ve got a big industrial tank sprayer that I can pump up with the oil/diesel mix I’m going to use. Oiling inside and out.

Have you seen the guys on KZbin that change Tundra frames without (totally) removing the drive train? It's pretty ingenious

Toyota's frame recall called for an exam of the frame. If it looked good as in no rust they coated them. If rusty they replaced the frame. I think the guys who went in with rusty frames got the better deal. I agree that the over-coating probably speeds up the frame rusting process. I talked to a guy who had about a 2001 Tacoma who told me his son works for Toyota. And his son told him it costs about $10,000 to replace the frame. A costly recall for Toyota. There was also a recall on lower ball joints for some of those first gen Tundras. You may want to give Toyota your VIN to make sure yours wasn't one of the affected vehicles and if so that the ball joint was replaced. I think the recall/warranty has expired but even so if you replace it yourself their OEM balljoints cost only a little over $100 and are an easy job.

Man I got nervous for you picking at that rot. That frame looks weak at the spot you were working on. Can see how the rust starts though. The curved part of the frame just collects water and dirt till the drain holes plug. Then the gunk just sits there wet..and then a rust blow out.. Silly design..

Why don't you use POR15? You can flapdisk sections at a time and brush it on.. It'll probably hold up better since it's not thick rubberized coating or too thick of a material. Looks like you should wire wheel the rear axle and fully redo it since it had a hole already

What you guys have to put up with regards to rust. In Australia we have 40 year old cars that have less frame rust. Glad I don't have to put up with snow and salted roads.
