Great Video! I am half way through, ( I work slow) he is not kidding about using a 1/4 inch drive 14mm to get the bracket bolt out of the intake plenum. Home Depot sells a 1/4 inch drive ratchet for less than $15 and the 14mm socket is about $3. So get those before you are up to your elbows in this job. Thanks again for the video. Edit, SUCESS!

Awesome video bro. One of the most comprehensive and most thorough "how-to" car repair vids out there! Question, did you change any of the other gaskets (e.g. the plenum gasket, etc?) Thanks again for the great vid!
@RevvedUpKnowledge6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the love! If the gaskets are rubber or paper then I would recommend changing them. Most of the gaskets on these engines are typically metal. If the black coating (sometimes they’re bare metal) on the gaskets are damaged then I change them out but if they’re okay, I clean them up nice and reuse them. If it’s an older car, the coating on the plenum gasket usually sticks to the manifold and I would recommend replacing them.

if anyone is doing this, it is a good time to change your spark plugs, especially the rear ones. You can also clean the underside of valve cover with brake cleaner or heat to avoid sludging. detailed here kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3SwoZSIipJ0mK8

So many of these videos and no one ever wants to say what the tightening sequence and torque values are.
@RevvedUpKnowledge2 жыл бұрын
In all honesty it really doesn’t need any that’s why you don’t see any. Tighten evenly and make sure your spark plug tube seals are correctly seated over the tubes. Usually those small 10mm bolts are about 4 ft lbs

Mine were absolutely baked onto the inside. 2004 Highlander. After spending about an hour chiseling out one of the old ones, I still didn't get it all. Ended up saying f it and got a new valve cover.

I have my car Toyota Camry v6 2000 oil leaking from front top cover gasket but the back gasket it's ok. What did you think I chang both or just the front one ?
@RevvedUpKnowledge5 жыл бұрын
@@fakriaabdali3535 if your doing it yourself then YES you can since it is the easiest of the two to change and you do not have to take off the front cover to replace the rear stuff. only thing needed to come off is the upper intake plenum. Sometimes its hard to see if the rear is leaking or not but you can inspect it with a mirror to be sure too. Thank you for commenting and #KeepWrenchin!

This video is very helpful, I am planning on doing the same job. Would you recommend going to Toyota for the OEM gaskets, or does it not matter as much what brand you use? Also what did you mean by using silicone for the half moon shape piece, is it like permatex ultra black?
@RevvedUpKnowledge5 жыл бұрын
Definitely OEM gaskets. Plus they’re not too much and the quality is 💯. Yes that will do. A lot of people tend to over look those half moon pieces

Yeah that 14mm bolt is hard, here is how I did it. 1. install new plenum gasket 2. Place a clean rag over the evap wiring 3. Place the plenum on the top of the engine but not on top of the studs that hold It, and bolt the ground strap that is on the back of the plenum. 4. Place the plenum onto the studs and install the nuts and Allen bolts but do not tighten them. 5. Wrap masking tape around the head of the 14mm bolt. 6. Put the Allen wrench into the Allen bolt and use it to adjust where the hole is for the 14mm bolt as you install the bolt. Not easy but I was able to get it done.

What kind of silicon did you use? The valve cover gasket comes with the spark plugs gasket or I have to buy it for separate?
@bocho4374 жыл бұрын
I just change the valve cover gasket and the oilpan gasket but coolant fell all around the engine so I used brake cleaner and know the check engine light (02 sensor circuit low voltage bank 2 sensor 2), Trac off and VSC are on. My friend told me than it was the brake cleaner damage the sensor. Becarfull how you clean the engine. Don't make the same mistake

What pry bar/seal remover are you using to remove the spark plug tube seals? I had a hard time getting these out with my seal puller.

in the video i just used a cheapo small harbor freight pry bar i think. any big flat screw driver should work though.

So I did the rear one the second time and it leaks all the oil and having a hard time placement. ? any secret or way to put it ?? I bought two Toyota gasket and same problem?? HELP!!!!
@thetir03 жыл бұрын
It is difficult. Be sure the engine around where the rear valve cover is clean before it is removed. Also be sure to clean the valve cover after removal. Install the new valve cover gasket and spark plug tube gaskets. Lube the tube gaskets a little with silicone lube. Put RTV where it is shown in the video. Work the valve cover over the valves. The gasket will probably come off but that is ok. Get it into position and lift the valve cover to see where the gasket has come off. Feel your way around the back of the gasket and reinstall it. This is why it must be clean before install. When you can feel and see that the gasket is properly seated line it up with the spark plug tubes and press down. You can crawl under the car and reverify that the gasket is in its proper place.

Add 2 washers to each cover bolt because the OEM crush washers are dead. CAREFUL tho, I just broke a valve cover today and had to drive 3 hours to get a replacement. They snap at a HAIR over 59 in/lbs because the bolts don't bottom out and remain loose even though they feel tight. An audible torque wrench would be ideal. Good luck, this one's a toughy!
@jezzabelleanderson3217 Жыл бұрын
@Radley Bradford you arent suppose to torque down the bolts holding the valve covers

My 2001 Avalon with the 3.0L V6 is a bit different. It has a piece at the back side of the front valve cover that I cannot figure out how to remove. Looks like bolts, but they are completely rounded off as if they are made that way?
@inshanity845 жыл бұрын
I just had the exact same issue. I couldn't figure it out so I removed the wires by cutting the plastic housing open with a razor blade. I also cut a section of that housing to access the valve cover bolt below it. DON'T overtighten those bolts when you put it back on, they snap off.

Great job on the video but don't take this one comment the wrong way. Your voice is fine and clear and I understand every word but if you had Vin Scully do a voice over on the video people would pay $100 dollars per copy. In case people don't know who Vin Scully is he was the voice of Dodger's baseball for nearly 70 years and to prove my point listen to him read a grocery list and then you will know what I mean. Thanks and great job on the video.
