Great comparison! It really shows the difference in wheelbase compared to the Gladiator, and how valuable a lift is, even with stock tires. 4th gen V8 4Runner owner here. Your videos really opened my eyes to the capability of the Grand Cherokee.

The trd off-road with rear locker, atrac and KDSS is a beast off-road. Also…the supercharger for the 4runner brings it up to a V8 power and torque.

My concern with the supercharger is longevity. I have not found anyone stating if it affects the longevity of the motor or tranny yet or not.

I've been super impressed with my '19 Cherokee Trailhawk...... The shorter wheelbase, locker rear, and all, it goes effortlessly where my F-150 struggles. Then, it has road manners like I never would have believed. No "regerts" 3 years in (and only 23K miles). 2.0 T is a hoot, too. Hoping for some longevity there, but it's fun as hell in the short run anyhow! heh heh heh Tires can make as much difference as anything. Have been repeatedly shown that traction is moderately important...... Good work, keep it up.

Couple more things Brad. The Jeep GC Trailhawk has a better towing capacity than the 4Runner, but the 4Runner has a better payload and cargo capacity (though neither vehicle is a diesel Excursion). I've driven both, and on the road the Trailhawk is in another league than the 4Runner. For me that made the difference, as much as I'd like to be off-road all the time, but most of my miles are on pavement.
@RichardsWorld
@RichardsWorld 9 ай бұрын
I didn't like how the 4Runner was on the highway, the fuel mileage is much less, the technology of the entertainment system was much older and terrible, and I couldn't lay down in the back if I wanted to sleep inside. The Grand Cherokee has enough room for me to lay down and sleep in the back. That might be moot since I have never done that, but that option is available. The Toyota should win in the reliability and have less depreciation though. If a newer model of 4Runner comes out that might make the current 4Runners depreciate.

Another thing to consider when comparing the Grand Cherokee and the 4Runner is fuel economy. The Hemi Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is rated much better in both city and Highway. And the V6 in the Grand Cherokee really spanks the V6 in the 4Runner. And today, with nearly $5 per gallon gas, this is significant. A friend of mine just bought a new 4Runner, and I’ll take my 6 year old Grand Cherokee any day.

I think I've noticed that the A Trac on the Yota does not work at higher RPMs. I'll have to see on mine. Haven't had it long enough to experiment much yet. I could theorize that it's to protect the driveline from being overloaded and breaking things. But I've paid attention to it on other videos where the A Trac works at lower RPMs until they get to a certain point then it turns off???? Just speculating of course.

One thing that can negatively or positively affect the performance of BLD is brake components. If they're worn BLD will be useless, if you have good cond instant bite pads on clean rotors will give the factory BLD the best chance to work as best it can.

So much importance must be considered on tires, experience in driving these conditions ie forward momentum aggressively, and healthy fear. I’m a 4 Runner 5th Gen owner. Had I my druthers, would never had let my 98 Sahara 4.0 go as well, my 1984 Grand Wagoneer; as well my 1975 Jeep Cherokee, go… Letting go of that 1974 Karman Ghia death trap, regretful. I test drove a Rubicon for 3 hours, loved it’s interior, but found it sub-par. Next day I purchased a 2017 4 Runner. It’s bitchin’, really, but I’d rather have a 1988 black Porsche Carrera wide body and a home in Rancho Santa Fe. 😂🤙🏻👁

Worth noting the new WL Grand Cherokee also has a disconnecting sway bar and even higher air suspension, up to 11.3 inches, over the WK2's max height. Thanks for the video. Fun to watch. For my money, its the Grand Cherokee over the Toyota all day, every day. I've had a WJ (QDII) and a WK2 (QTII) so am a little bias, but I think for good reason.

Monocoque Body with Built-in Ladder Frame They say that superior off-road handling capability could only come at the expense of on-road smoothness. They have obviously never driven Grand Cherokee . By incorporating a lightweight and highly rigid monocoque body with a built-in ladder frame that provides added resistance to torsion and flexing and fixing them atop a dynamic independent suspension, Grand Cherokee achieves an unprecedented combination of all-terrain control and luxury-sedan comfort. For added durability, grand cherokee now makes more extensive use of galvanized steel body panels, while the new aluminum hood panel reduces weight for better handling.

When climbing ledges and steep obstacles where you are in low range and trying to apply a lot of torque, I don't think the brake lock has enough capacity to be that helpful but it's better than completely open diff. It probably works better in more level situations on ice and mud. I've driven a JLU Wrangler Sport quite a bit on trails in Utah with its open diffs. With its better articulation it keeps all 4 times on the ground where they get traction so I've never had an occasion where one wheel wanted to spin. I'm going to do my best to stay away from mud. I've often wondered why manufacturers don't put Torsen LSD devices into offroad vehicles. They work well and there is a lot less hardware to install. I've seen H1 Hummers on difficult trails in Utah and they do well with the Torsen LSD. I went back and forth in my mind for a long time and finally bought the JLU Wrangler for myself instead of the WK2 Grand Cherokee. I'm more accepting of the shortcomings of the Wrangler in daily driving. My daughter has a 2WD WK2 and wants a 4WD WK2. If she can find one that she can afford I will probalby have to help with modifications to it. She has driven my Wrangler on several trips and doesn't want one for herself. Toyota's philosophy has always been "adequate for the intended purpose". They don't believe in pushing the limits, if the V6 works for most people then don't use a V8, etc. And in their minds most people don't go on trails like we do.

FYI Late model 2022 TrailHawks can only be had with the Quadra Trac ll systems. That's why there are so many in dealer lots here in southern NY. No one is stupid enough to pay $10,000 more for a '22 model over a '21 model and get a less capable vehicle at the same time.

@@dean8067 for articulation it is in fact the end all of off-roading (rock crawling, uneven surfaces, the typical stuff everyday people consider "real" off-roading). For pre running, high speed washboard (things that cost an arm and a leg in suspension to keep your vehicle from destroying itself to begin with), puttering around overlanding in non challenging terrain where you can make it thru with any 4wd and a decent set of tires... or anywhere articulation isn't required a solid axle is inferior.
