I've had my 2023 Yaris Cross GXL AWD hybrid for 3 months. That's the mid range model here in Australia. I have been averaging 3.3 litres per 100km in that time driving in 50% peak hour traffic in Sydney and 50% on a motorway. That's better than 100mpg and so I pay for the petrol on rare occasions and get the electricity for free. I find it super comfy and the handling and drive feel/responsiveness is excellent. I find the build and materials to be excellent too. The safety features are great but I turn off the lane assist as I feel like it might interfere with minimising rolling resistance now and again and that's all important in a hybrid. The CVT gearbox is quiet and as described here, it is snappy when you put your foot down but if you drive for economy and learn how to make use of rolling resistance and 'pulsing' and 'floating' and 'rolling' to keep the regen up, it's a lot of fun and very relaxing. I find that I get the most economy out of this car by driving in normal mode, as this manages the rolling resistance - regen balance best. I adore this car and can't believe anyone would purchase any other car in this class. In the Aussie model we have to plug our phone in for Apple Carplay (and whatever the Android thing is) and that and the lack of a spare tyre are the only drawbacks. Forget the nonsense criticism about rear doors which 'don't open wide enough', very, very few who need to put a baby seat in a car will be looking at a car this size. They should go for the Corolla Cross hybrid. Oh yeah, I bought a new spare wheel for when I take it over the ranges into the outback, where, being an AWD it can handle almost any road Australia has to offer. It's smart and efficient in the city and does what I want it to do in the bush and looks good doing it.

@@numbereightyseven Adding to that, the hybrid has far fewer moving parts (the difference is in the thousands). Service interval of 12 months is nice. Another issue some people have is potential battery replacement cost. Toyota's warranty is very generous but, even if you had to replace it after 10 years, the savings in other areas would more than cover it. As a low mileage user, myself, I've seen recommendations that an HEV is not for me. Give it a run for an hour every month to charge the battery and it'll be fine; even then, the warranty is likely to cover most problems.

JC how far can the car go on just the battery???????
@AlamAhmad-ur8sq10 ай бұрын
You not told others about (B) mode when you go down hills it gives you a full battery and you don't have to use the brakes as much it's saves your brakes pads and fuel

This car is nothing like a YARIS, it is 4 inches taller, 1 inch wider and 9 inches longer. Also it looks nothing like a YARIS. Why did TOYOTA not give it a new name?

The petrol engine never drives the wheels in a Toyota hybrid system! Every time reviews get this wrong! It is a ECVT! The petrol engine is only connected to a generator!
@PixelisedPaul2 жыл бұрын
In that case why bother having a gearbox at all? A motor should drive it from zero to it's maximum speed without one...
@DinosaurJuiceCars2 жыл бұрын
@@PixelisedPaul it doesn't have a gearbox. It is a fixed drive from the electric motor to the wheel (through a reduction gear). The load on the engine from the generator and the difference power requirements when driving means the rpm of the engine changes similar to a engine connected to a CVT gearbox so for marketing purposes Toyota called the system the eCVT.

1.5lt turbo with only 114 hp, why does it need a turbo then? also, it makes a weird noise, is it the electric motor, or the electric charger?
@thor_40172 жыл бұрын
Turbo? I don't think there is one, I've just checked the specs in toyota website. My 1.6 Subaru turbo has 170hp. On my Subaru turbo is mostly there for torque, not hp. This yaris has naturally aspirated motor performance.

I'm sorry but 50mpg (imperial), i.e. 5.65l/100 km is terrible. My Vitara LY (same size really) with the old 1.6L engine does 5.9l (48 mpg) without even trying hard and with the start/stop usually disabled (it starts up slightly too slow to be safe to use). Make the battery smaller and make it a plug-in and we're all good.

All I think is that I really like the looks and that toyota has a reputation for being very reliable and that a hybrid should be good for fuel efficiency I can't be wrong about these can I? Well looks is subjective but you know

Remember a car is no good if it has scratchy plastics and the doors don't make the right sound when they close. Clearly never had a sixties minivan with a hardboard dashboard and you were just glad if the door didn't fall off when you shut it. Scratchy plastics my arse!🤣

idk why are cars so inefficient across England and US. In India all cars pretty much do 50mpg, like that is the pretty much the buying criteria. it cannot be less than 40 or 35 max. and they have no hybrid tech goin on, just a plain old diesel/petrol engine with a manual gearbox. tho its the diesel which gives 50+ mpg
@jekiewicz2 жыл бұрын
Can't speak for the UK but gas is usually pretty cheap in the states, speeds are probably higher than in India, and the cars are generally heavier due to safety restrictions. Mainly due to the first point more people can afford to cruise around in a v8 truck. An SUV costs the same as a sedan so a lot of people just go with those.

Pretty sure it’s Cheddar Gorge. Well worth a visit. There is a nice hike up one side of the gorge and down the other. You could probably walk it in an hour and a half but allow for 2. The cave is worth a visit but Wookey Hole is better. It’s not a driving road because there are a lot of cars slow rolling looking at the scenery and trying to park. I think it is pretty busy peak season. Bristol, Glastonbury, Wells all nearby. Actually I also liked doing a circular walk on Brent Knoll. I should write a guide book!

Just a pity that Toyota UK is not selling the Excell in this colour for the foreseeable future, as they say, they have "run out of stock". Hopefully, when I'm ready to buy in mid '23 they will have bought some more paint.

No! No more paint. Now all silver, grey, black, white or red. Take your pick or bugga off as my local Toyota dealer would say while smiling and shaking your hand at the same time.
