Happily It's not necessary to remove the scuttle to get at the top strut nuts on my 2003 Yaris 1.0 so made it a lot easier. Thanks for the vid.

The older MK1 was in some regards easier to work at, although im not going to say this one is an absolute nightmare to work on because of a few bolts in the road.

You dont need to take all the stuff off to remove the top bolt use a offset style spanner for the shock absorber top nut and mole grip on the shock absorber just enough pressure so you dont damage the shock absorber and enough so it does not spin have done this many times

Really clear and detailed tutorial. I'm now more confident about doing the job myself to have some cash. The descriptions with socket and wrench sizes helps a lot. Thanks!

I got the top bolt off the strut with some struggle, but couldn't get the new ones tightened up properly without removing the wipers, etc.. Now I wish I had just done all that to remove them as well - 1000x easier access and really wasn't hard to remove and put back together. Thanks for the vid!

The bit extra time stripping the parts makes a world of difference for access. Great to read the video helped, happy motoring.

Are the struts or the springs responsible for the height of the car (how high off the ground the car is)?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the very late reply, just seeing i never responded. The springs mainly will determine the ride height. Im not a big fan of lowered cars so i haven't a huge amount of knowledge in this area as i generally think an economy hatchback should be left as it is, they are not really a track racing machine. However i think to do a proper job with lowering a car the struts should be matched to the springs, lowering springs and standard struts may not leave the car with the best handling balance.

Where did you put the little washer that comes in the same bag as the new top nut??? I can't find this anywhere if it should go on top where the bolt sticks through or if it goes in between the steel mount ring and the nut that has the coil spring torqued down. Monroe doesn't include where to put it in the manual... I am asking because this brand new strut STILL has a gap when I lower the car and I can't close it by tightening, so I am afraid I just pulled a newbie and put the washer in wrong. Any help is most appreciated!

Hi, i think from memory the washer goes beside the nut.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Thank you so much, that would stand to reason and I did put it under the nut...you'd think they would specify it in the manual

The bolts surrounding the strut will not budge for me whatsoever. Even used a breaker bar

What time in the video do these bolts appear? WD40 and possibly heat may also help.

I have 2007 Toyota Yaris Hatch that I purchased from someone and it was lowered. I’m trying to get it put back to its stock height so I purchased springs for the front and back of the car and took it to the mechanic. The mechanic told me I had to get different struts in order for him to put the replacement springs in. Can you please give me some guidance?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 5 жыл бұрын
The springs predominalty are what dictates the height of the car. Some can get away with just changing the springs to lower a car, it depends on weather the car had different struts fitted the time it was lowered. If they are still the stock struts then standard height springs can be put back in.

This probably a European yaris? The steering wheel on the right?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 4 жыл бұрын
Yes its a UK car, mainland europe would get the same car but with left hand drive. Ireland is right hand drive but the cars have km/h speedometers. For tax reasons irish cars seem to have a lower spec. Im in Northern Ireland so the cars here are uk spec with mph speedometers and its more common to find a high trim level like the t-spirit Where are you based yourself?

They never sold the yaris sedan here, possibly the odd grey import one ended up in Southern Ireland I would imagine the mechanical setup would be the same regardless if its a hatch or saloon

So much work to get to the upper nut of the strut... I call "stupid engineering"... Would not expect this kind stupidity from Toyota
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 4 жыл бұрын
To be fair this is quite common on a lot of small cars, the honda jazz was the same, Renault modus unfortunately its where the suspension struts have to go. I suppose a strut doesnt have to be removed every day.
@zoidberg444
@zoidberg444 4 жыл бұрын
To be fair its a budget compact car. They were very limited on space in the engine bay. This kind of repair would probably only have to be done once in the cars life. I guess they decided it was worth it.
