@@rightlanehog3151 I agree crown and fluid film do work great on body panels ,but on suspension parts and wheel bearings that are constantly getting sprayed by salt water from the tires it does not stay on those parts very long

Eric never read the warning on those pullers which say, DO NOT use an impact wrench. Love when he says, "'Don't get your face in front of there," after he has put tons of pressure on the puller. That forged steel is tough stuff!

IF YOUR DRIVETRAIN HAS RUST, READ THIS!!! Peter, thank you for making a thorough video that includes replacement of the O-ring and knuckle seal. However, no video, yours included, mentions the seal on the cv axle (Toyota pn: 90304-A0001) that likely also must be replaced, esp if the truck is driven in areas that use road salt. This was an unpleasant surprise for me, and one I'd like to help others avoid. Do yourselves a favor, and replace the drive axle seal!

That is so much easier than doing front wheel bearings on my 95 Taco 4x4. I had to take the knuckles to a machine shop and even they had a hard time with it.

Great video! Thanks for including the seal and O ring replacement. My wheel bearing went bad because I think I tore that seal when putting after market suspension on. If the rotors are stuck on use 5/16th bolts into the two holes on the rotor and it will pop right off. If the seal fights you,be sure everything is clean and use a plate with two clamps to squish it in ;)

It's all thanks to the O-ring at the root of the flange. Otherwise you'd be chiseling it out with an air hammer.

If the hub is stuck can use the bolts to push it off. Luckily Tacoma is a breeze to replace front bearing assemblies, even for a 'hobbyist' like me. Super Lube is excellent grease!

The hole in the flange is so you can remove the bolts. Impact wrench with an extension and it is off with a lot less fuss.

at 8:50, don't forget to grease the o-ring per FSM instructions!

You need to mount the new bearing assembly before placing the axle through the spindle or you will damage the seal. If the bearing assembly was mounted the splines would line the axle into the hub.

Peter, the next time you get a 3rd Gen Tacoma in the shop could you please let me know the “Depth” of the holes that are in the rear crossmember that the rear skid plate attaches too. They are the 2 holes that are drilled right into the crossmember. I have a 2017 that I put a TRD pro skid plate on and one of the bolt holes got stripped. I managed to grab a couple of threads with loctite to hold the skid plate in place so I don’t want to remove the bolt for fear of not being able to get it back in. If I had the Dept of the holes I can ore order a time sert thread repair kit for the (M8X1.25 MM) bolt hole they use to hold the accessory skid plate in place and fix it.. Thanks in advance. Steve

I just replaced my left front wheel bearing last week at nearly 200K on my 05 TRD Sport 4x4 Taco. There was NO play in the bearing at all like this one but it HOWLED like an AT or MT tire(I have Michelin LT’s). Everything came off so damn EZ! Even the axel nut came off first try with a cheater bar and a screwdriver in the rotor. The hub came off just like this one. Ridiculously ez and I so happy to be free of the noise!.

Did you use a Toyota wheel bearing? Eric the car guy had trouble because he took the bearing apart to keep the 4 mounting bolts, and tried to reassemble and it kicked his butt pretty hard.

I would have put a small amount of grease on that shaft spline to avoid dry steel on steel contact. Not that it would wear out before that truck is toast. Maybe Peter did, and didn't show it.

So excellent! Must be a pleasure to work on this one. So much upgrading all the parts like the axle are able to be pushed in by fingers! Axle nut not even stuck!! 4:23 tip, if you place your whole hand behind the part that is close to the camera, it will help the camera understand what to focus on. Also looks like he might be in again in a few hundred miles for a front brake job. Hope you put that suggestion in! Were the four wheel bearing bolts hard to come off? I noticed the shiny corners on the head of the bolts closest to camera. MOST EXCELLENT video today and thank you for including all the steps. Even the ones you don't think is important. Did you lube the extra rear of the bearing o ring with a little silicone paste to help it go on easier? It is round but does someone need to worry if that o ring rolls? Will is seat properly if it does? Or cause any extra stress and be a failure point later?

Thank you for this video I just did this today on my 2005 tacoma it wasn't too bad the only issue I had was "pressing" the new seals in on the back of the steering knuckle. If wasn't as easy as you made it appear I finally lightly tapped them in using a small punch and hammer I wish toyota made a tool that would press them in evenly using a socket or wrench anyway I got it done thank you for the video!

Why does the axle nut need so much torque?

Torque tight enough to remove any slop from the bearing, but not so tight it binds the bearing. Either too little or too much torque will ruin the bearing.
