It's not saying they sucked before and their music made peoples' ears bleed. Comparitively, her overall singing has improved over time, as you would expect with a performer. Even pros improve. How many Bond references can you find in the lyrics? "Shatters in my hand" -> Dr. Guntram Shatterhand was Blofelds alias in You Only Live Twice (novel). "Shatterhand" was also the working title for Bond 25 "I wanted more, but you were movin' on to better things" -> Sean Connery was handing over to Roger Moore "Five to six, a lie, a kiss, the secrets that were served, we'd never say" -> Bond 6 was On Her Majesty's Secret Service "Skip to eight, we called it fate, to live, to let us die another day" -> Bond 8 was "live and let die" (plus "die another day" is another Bond title) "And nine, I saw the signs, reflected in the barrel of a gun" -> Bond 9 was "the man with the golden gun" "Ten, we're here again, those who loved me burned up in the sun" -> Bond 10 was "the spy who loved me" Anymore?

Perfect outline of a quarter life crisis. Looking back at life from the age of 25 asking yourself where did the golden years go, and all the bumps in the road you went through on your journey that aged you prematurely. You wish you’d done things differently and enjoyed the ride instead of focusing on the destination. You find yourself slowing down a bit, and it makes you anxious. You’re also now just a few years away from the next decade in your life and your afraid of it. You feel that you’ve lost your youth, and you see nothing but confusion in your past and uncertainty in your future. And since the last 25 years went by so fast, the upcoming years will go by faster. And before you know it, you’ll be in a mid life crisis (but also there’s that question if you’ll even get to that age).

This does sound like a Bond song. At least in the soundtrack. Some expressions, the title, but especially the structure of the song. Taylor usually has a lot more grit in her vocals during song peaks, and this one she went with her more refined notes, but still very rock'n'roll. And the instrumentals felt more... not exactly "softer", but "intentional". The candence was what I'd expect from a Bond song. The chords in the end were 007 to the T! And the video itself, she felt veeeeery Bond girl, the outfits, makeup, the coloring, the sets. I'll be very surprised if this isn't in the next movie somewhere. 25 was written when Momsen was with her 25 besides being a personal song about the losses she had from people close to Kato Khandwala, Chris cornell and all the artists who went through the turbulence period at 27, is a tribute to those who are no longer here but who added a lot to music and art. This music resonates as its apex of writing, melody, composition and at its best was considering how beautiful and delivered it is in the video and the emotion that the song passes us. It is the talent overflowed more vividly in a period that no longer makes music, but products to be sold.

It's a nice story, but almost every line references the Bond movie matching the number... including Bond having lived much longer than expected, to retirement in #25. Also, it has the Bond theme chord progression. To copy what I wrote on the unplugged version comments section: 1 - (Dr) NO-thing lasts forever 2 - followed you From Russia With Love 3 - the only one I'm not even seeing a squint-for-it connection (Goldfinger) 4 - moving on to better things - maybe because the boat in Thunderball is fast? 5 - a lie (Bond "dies" in the opening scene of You Only Live Twice) and a kiss (it's BOND) 6 - secrets served In Her Majesty's Secret Service 7 (skipped) (Diamonds Are Forever) 8 - Live and Let Die (another day) 9 - reflections in the barrel of a (Golden) Gun 10 - those who love me / The Spy Who Loved Me 11 - Moonraker & 12 - For Your Eyes Only - held the future (techno mcguffins) in my hand
