Imagine waking up each day - and THIS is what work is!! 😀😀. Surrounded by the best gear; hours playing it; 'working' with a best mate. And channelling your passion. Sure there's a famous quote of 'when you're doing what you love, it's not work'. (Not saying you 2 guys don't work hard - top production values and a lot that must go on behind the scenes 👍👍).

Thanks Steve! It’s part work - Dan has a company to run and I used to have one, so when this was happening TPS was almost a total hobby. Now things have moved on and it’s kinda my main job now. Dan still does most of his work elsewhere, but it’s all good. It wouldn’t pay us both, but it’s great fun!

The last mode on the Astronaut is like the EHX Freeze pedal. Play, then engage the pedal, and it hangs. If you set it right, it detunes, too. AWESOME.

Got a Manticore after seeing this. Great service from Scotty and an amazing pedal. Not had it long but already thinking it'll become a staple on the board. Great sound, very versatile. It does that 'what you already had, but more' thing extremely well and I keep saying 'wow, that sounds good' whenever I plug it in! Result! It also seems to have so many other sound possibilities in it, all of which make me want to play more - great! TPS continues to deliver, keep it up guys.

If months of watching this fine show have taught me anything, it is that I really don't need to have or buy any more pedals, by Dan & Mick's example I've learned to use the good-ol' dirt boxes to get more satisfactory tones out of my cheap hybrid amp. Maybe I can't get all tones, but I certainly get more satisfaction out of my gain devices, so much so that I've decided to sell half of them. Thank you That Pedal Show!

Guys, you really missed it with the Astronaut. Fully clockwise on the mode switch gives some really awesome low octaves, especially nice with drive or fuzz. Give it another listen with higher mix like you had near the end. Low shimmer! I think you’ll dig it.

Absolutely love this pedal show! Would love to see dan and nick pick up competing higher end amp sim/multi effect boards (I.e. fractal ax8 and line 6 helix) and hear the sounds they would both get out of them. I’m a huge metal fan, but there are way too many videos showcasing these two boards doing really saturated gain sounds but not enough of the super articulate, highly dynamic tones you two get! Love love love you guys!

The manticore got me thinking about other fabled beasts, namely unicorns, which got me thinking inn turn to all the wonderful kit lying in various ‘rock museums’ and Hard Rock cafes around the world. I think a show in which you feature gear that literally can’t be bought (ie the various institutions could lend them to you) would provide riveting content and more guitar folklore in the pursuit of the ultimate unobtainium, the perfect tone...

Hello - suggested show fodder (which I'm sure you have thought of already, and you have circled around it in the past) from a huge fan - have you guys considered branching out into amplifiers as a central topic? It would be incredibly helpful to have you walk through amplifier characteristics and applications, and really interesting to watch. And how cool would it be to have Dr. Z himself on the show? He's killing it these days. Anyway, count your favorite amp categories and multiply by a thousand variations and a thousand builder's individual takes to come up with a thousand lifetimes of riveting TPS content.

So the EQ on the Two Rock acts as a notch filter centered around a frequency? Does the Manticore switch say, "Hit It"? Regarding the GigRig and expression pedal, is it possible to patch one pedal into the G2 and have it control several different pedals, either simultaneously or independently? That Shift Line Astronaut does remind me of my Neunaber Immerse.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+William Smothers Hi William. Yes the Manticore switch does say that. Made us smile too. :0) GigRig and expression pedal... if you wanted to do that, you’d be looking at MIDI and one the MiDi enabled expression pedals, such as the Source Audio. GigRig customer service can confirm or deny this (Mick here). Two Rock. No specific notice filter that I’m aware of in terms of selecting a band of frequencies and having active cut and boost. It has your usual bass middle and treble EQ pots, plus a bunch of switches and gain controls that work over the EQ in general. Versatile!

Digging my Manticore so far. I still have to spend more time to dial in the precise sort of sound I had with my Klon for "that" thing but it has a much wider sweet spot. It's really good through a wide gain range which is pretty rare.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+Grant Ferstat That’s how it struck me at first Grant - the ‘wider sweet spot’ is a great description. Also seems that while it can do Klon sounds, it’s actually quite a bit more than that, and the circuit feels a bit different to play.... in an entirely good way. They’ve done a great job IMHO (Mick here.) cheers for now.

Too Micks comment on the bass of the supercharged. I find that too be characteristic of 12ay7s, really warm, chewy sounding tube, less gain than a 12ax7. throw a NOS GE 12ay7 in the v1 of a super reverb and behold...alas, I think a 12ax7 would make it crispier in the top end and also add gain

Hey guys, love your stuff, your show is the best education on how my guitar works I've ever gotten, and I now feel like after 30 years, I almost know what I'm doing, so thanks! I'm writing because I'd like your opinion on a phrase I hear all the time, one that always makes my skin crawl a little. "Tone is in the fingers." I was going to try to mask my disdain for it, but it can't be done. I feel it's a gross oversimplification. Any thoughts?
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+Dirtrum Yeah, (Mick here). It is a gross oversimplification, that probably has its roots in the fact that certain guitar players sound exactly like themselves, seemingly no matter what gear they play through. So in a sense, their ‘tone’ is in them. Fingers, brain, body etc. However... stick David Gilmour (for it seems to be him to which said phrase is most commonly applied) on stage with an acoustic and ask him to play Marooned and, well, it doesn’t work does it? So the tone is very clearly in the gear too. In my opinion, that phrase is used when people are feeling exasperated with not sounding very ‘good’, or at a loss when the stuff they buy doesn’t make them sound like Gilmour and others of his ilk. The irony here is that their own tone is in //their// fingers and their gear. What we all need is the confidence to chuck Davey G out the window and play from our own hearts. Maybe.
@Dirtrum
@Dirtrum 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Mick, agreed. Funny too, I had a long-winded version of my original question typed out where I stuck Stevie Ray in that Gilmour spot, but they are interchangeable in that realm. I like to say "tone *starts* at the fingers", because it really is every component of the player, the guitar, and the gear that create the tone, not just the magic finger sauce. Cheers, and thanks for the reply!

@ThatPedalShow

+Frank Lippens We haven’t played anything like it Frank. You could look at any number of the Klon clones, but the way the Manticore adds so much dynamic gain/headroom controls really sets it apart. I think a video/series on what pedal board you have recently taken out to use and some examples of how/if you used them, would be great. With any thoughts about how the board may change next gig. Call it 'last night a pedal saved my life' or 'Tell me what did you gig last night'

@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+Timothy Ritchie That’s Interesting. You might laugh, but Dan and I sort of pull back a bit when it gets too much about what we’re doing personally. Not because we don’t want to share it, but because we’d rather the show stayed more general to you lot watching it. But... that idea does have some legs if we keep it about advice and learnings....... cheers!

That Pedal Show cool. I like when you talk about what some of the iconic pedals mean to you and go over how you've used them (the recent boss live event being a good example) the wealth of knowledge shared on here always seems to me to be aimed at the practical solution eg cutting through a mix or getting the best out of an amp. So i think if you were to do aometging where you help each other evaluate something you are using in the real world and suggesting alternatives it would be very intriguing to watch. It may also bring some of your knowledge to the fore Mick. Dan has an amazing technical know how but your practical approach to getting a tone always seems to be your strength. (I might be wrong but thinking of the super overdrive trick - using it as a cleaner channel with the tiny terror) jusy occured to me in this vid when you were talking about the vibrato and what you use that it would be good to hear more about. Just a thought. Great vids as always. I love the horn.

In comparison to the AC15 video you guys made a few weeks ago, would the normal channel for the AC15 be equivalent to the top boost channel without the extra gain but having the EQ turned up all the way?
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+William Pierce , Erm, maybe a little bit. They’re different animals really. Different gain staging and different EQ. The normal channel is significantly more dull sounding. Ish. Cheers!

Given the plethora of amps y'all have, how about a clean/drive channel comparison w/wo pedals....

Challenge time. Can you find a longer period of silence on TPS from Mick and Dan (speaking), than the 2mins 23seconds during the Warbler demo?

I was wondering if you guys could do a show sharing your thoughts on speakers when it comes to pedal platform rigs. I like both yours styles and I'm trying for similar style rig. I needed a small gigging amp and was lucky enough to get a Peavey Valveking ii combo for less then half the price but i'm not happy with the internal speaker. I live in a secludes area and trying multiple speakers for myself is not easy. In my online search I mostly find metal riffing and super clean examples. I finally decided on a Celestion heavy magnet Creamback, the G12H-75. I'm using the amp as a bluesy clean Vox or JTM sound as the basic sound then adding pedals. Is a heavy magnet a good idea for this kind of rig ? is a 75 watt speaker going to sound good in a 20 watt amp? thought ? thanks (the speaker hasn't arrived yet and it's going a 2x12 if I don't like it in my Peavey)

+I Forget Hello! It’s really tough to give much advice on speakers. Mick here. I’ve done plenty of blind speaker listening, in order to spec them for amps.... and opinions always vary even among the same listening group. Often quite dramatically. That said, Dan and I both really like the Creambacks; they seem to sit in a place that suit the kinds of amps we like. Not as aggressive as V30s, but not as coloured and character inducing as Greenbacks. On that note, find the M-65 is a step closer to the Greenback in terms of its ‘woodyness’ and gain character. We’d say if you like classic rock drives, go M-65. If you like the bigger bolder cleans go H-75. That said, we’ve never heard one in the ValveKing so it’s very hard to say. Good luck!

Thanks, that helps me think I made the right choice since I'm aiming for bigger bolder cleans. I still think it would make for an interesting show since speakers are often ignored when building a rig and it seems, to me at least, to be more complicated then it first appears. And of course if the Creamback sounds crappy in my amp I'll be blaming That Pedal Show for my bad decisions ;-) (just kidding if that wasn't clear enough) Thanks again, love the show.

Hey Dan n Mick! Hope you enjoyed the conference :) loving your demoes as always, and hate to go off topic but have u guys checked out the Mooer preamp pedals doing the rounds? I think you'd dig em, especially through the FX loop of one of those there valve amps you've got. Being a total Blackmore nut , I got the one that's apeing his sig amp from Engl, sounds great to my ears through an EHX Magnum 44. I'm not a modelling fan by any means but these sound more "profiled " in the Kemper sense. Would love to hear you guys put them through their paces!

Thank you for putting out a video midweek. All good pedals, but both I think the Manticore stood out - it's the Kloniest Klon clone that ever Klonned ;-) I guess you have to email the guy if you want a pedal.

+ConnConn1996 Erm, not sure. Even though I do it on other channels, I find it a bit cringey. (Mick here). Maybe we should try. Dan and I definitely live on different sides of the beat when it comes to feel. He’s very rock/urgent. I couldn’t play in time if I tried. Always behind, always swung. I can’t play rock for toffee! But maybe we should try. :9)
