My grandpa served in the Pacific Theatre in WW2. He rarely (I mean…rarely!) talked about it. My brother is one of those who pestered for details. My grandpa finally pushed him against the wall one day and with his face inches from my brothers, said “War is Hell. Don’t ask me about it again”. He earned the Bronze Star, and all he said about it, was “I was ordered to do something, and I did it. Same as any other soldier would’ve done”. (He strapped himself with more ammo than he could carry, and ran up a hill, digging foxholes to avoid being hit by the enemy, to replenish his men, who had run out). I’m proud of my grandfather, not just because he served, but because of who he was. He was a little rough around the edges (I hear war can do that to a person), but he had so much love for his fellow man. I can’t even begin to imagine the things he saw, and the things he had to do. I have nothing but respect for soldiers.

Both of my kids were in the AFJROTC in High School and at every banquet there was, in the corner a small table with a single place setting and on the place setting was a small amount of salt, a wedge of lemon, a slice of bread and a glass turned upside down the significance of these items are: A slice of lemon reminds us of the bitter fate of those captured or missing in a foreign land. A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears of our missing and their families who long for answers. The glass is inverted to symbolize their inability to share a toast. The chair is empty because loved ones are still missing.

This is actually military tradition… just went to a military ball and there is always a single table set with an empty glass a lemon and salt and a table leaned up against the table. The empty chair obviously represents all those who died and can’t be there and we toast to them and do a moment of silence. The salt represents the tears shed by their loved ones over their loss and the lemon represents the bitter loss of the soldier being gone. We all take a moment to think and thank them and give them a toast a moment of silence. It happens at every single military ball I have ever been to for 12 years.

As a nurse I have cared for many vets, and they have a tendency to talk a little more to nurses than they do their own family. Several years ago I cared for a WWII Navy vet. I thanked him for his service and the flood gates opened. He told many stories during his time with me. The most memorable story is his part in the Normandy invasion. As a sailor, he was part of deploying the demo experts who placed the ordinances under water prior to the beach landing. (I was not aware this had been part of the invasion), . He talked about many things that he was a part of during his time of service. Later that day his wife came to visit. I was talking with her about some of the things he told me and she was amazed! After nearly 50 years of marriage he had never told her any of the stories he shared with me! Out of earshot, I mentioned that she may want to record him talking about his military escapades. He left the hospital and went home, but it really hit me that these stories may die along with him ( he was not a young man). As we lose these members of The Greatesr Generationwe will lose the parts of this war that are personal accounts that will never be found in a history book.. I pray for all of our great soldiers, past and present. They are truly heroes. I also ask for prayers for my nephew. He is a loadmaster for the F-35 and is being deployed to Europe because of one evil man. You guys are great, and I laugh at the banter between the two of you. I look forward to every video you release. I am sending you a package from North Carolina.

Years ago, an in-law was among several veterans being honored in Beckley. He showed up to the event wearing his dress blues. There was an interesting conversation that happened with my son. He was 8 years old at the time. And just before this conversation started, some guys from the army color guard had wandered over to us. Vet: "You gonna join the Marine Corps like me and your daddy did?" Boy: "Ehhh... I dunno." Vet: "Don't ya wanna get you some medals like these?" (tapping his considerable ribbon stack) Boy: "I don't want that one." (pointing at the purple heart) Vet: (laughs) "No, no you don't." Boy: (pointing) "Is that a Silver Star?" (accurately identified) Vet: "Yeah, I got that one and the purple heart at place called the Chosin Reservoir. You heard of that?" Boy: "No, but I'll ask dad about it." Vet: "Oh, he knows, son. He knows." Color guard dudes' eyes get as big as dinner plates, and they beeline back to their buddies, and I can see them pointing back at us. I couldn't hear the convo, but I guarantee it went something like this: "Duuuude, that Marine over there was at f'n Chosin!"

Thank you guys for giving this song the respect it deserves. One thing that just burns me up is there are so many songs ( even non country) that give you a "glimpse" as to what our soldiers have gone through or are going through both funny and serious yet we still treat our soldiers like dirt. They have to fight for their medical benefits their dental benefits they're retirement funds they have to fight homelessness they have to fight for help with basic needs and we as the public can't deny that we don't know what they have gone through or done to keep us free and yet alot of them are still alone and struggling just to have their basic needs met mentally physically and emotionally and only common responses thank you for your service. Why is it so difficult for our society and our government to put our money where our mouth is and actually thank them for their service by providing them with the needs and freedom of which they provided for us. Instead of paying Joe small 40 million dollars to throw a ball around for a few years that 40 million dollars could help more than 40 million veterans. Sorry guys for the rant it just burns me up that we have our soldiers active and non active male and female fighting for just the very basic needs something they should never have to fight for because they already have. I love all of y'all's reactions please keep them up. I've said it once and I'll say it again you guys are by far my favorite KZbinrs. Keep having fun! 💓

Here I go again suggesting Mikele Buck. I’m not sure if you know some of this history but here goes. Mikele was a Marine who served in Iraq. He tried out a few years ago for The Voice after he was scouted by the show - pure Country voice!! Loved him and have been following him since. There’s a podcast on YT (the magician and the jock??) where you can actually hear him tell the story of how this song, ❗️Irish Road❗️, came to be. It’s really worth a watch. The producers of The Voice of course tried to get a story about his service and he refused to talk about it. He said he had a hard enough time keeping it out of his head without ‘trying’ to remember it. He ripped his mic off during one interview and told them he was done for that day. He went to his room at the hotel and proceeded to write Irish Road, I think he said about 3 - 4 am. He was stationed in Baghdad and his unit was charged with keeping the airport road, which was named Route Irish, swept for IEDS. I can’t do the story justice so I won’t even try. However I’ve read that the airport road has often been called the most dangerous road in the world. I can’t even begin to imagine how horrible war is, and how much of your soul is left behind, but this song breaks my heart. And his lyrics are chilling. So for all those who have served and especially those who didn’t come home, thank you for everything you’ve sacrificed. 🇺🇸 💙 🇺🇸

Love the reaction. This is my first time hearing it too. It's a nice song. My dad (May he rest in peace) is a Marine. There is one story he would tell. He and his platoon boarded the plane bound for Vietnam when they stopped in Okinawa Japan to fuel up. I can't remember the rank of the person at the base in Okinawa that stepped onto the plane and called my dad's name and a few others, they were told to where to go and the plane went on to Vietnam and dad did office work, if he hadn't been told to step off that plane I might not be here. He went on to work at Fort Harrison, he worked on Military court cases. I know he lost men he considered his friends because if something about that war came on TV, his eyes would glaze over and he'd get this grief stricken look on his face. Every soilder has a story, but the whole story is never told. War takes something away from us all. Back to the song, I can see the words in the song, if that makes sense, you can see guys sitting around talking about their glory days but never what happened on the battle fields. David Allen Coe has a song called 'Love is a Never Ending War' about a thirsty young man wanting to get a drink from some older veterans and tries to impress them by lying and blaming the scars he got from women on warfare. "They were half-way through that bottle And they were gettin' high I never fought in those two wars But Lord my throat was dry So I showed them scars and stitches Inflicted by Maria But I didn't think that would get me a drink So I blamed it on Korea" Not that he fooled any of them... Where you from in West Virginia I'm from Logan County I went to school with the hatfields and mccoys there was a fist fight and a bloody nose on the playground every day And every boy carried a pocket knife If the truth be told some of the girls carried knives as well
