Hey! Research biologist who's lived out in Mongolia for a couple years here. At 14:20 you mention the sheep is being slaughtered "according to the old Mongolian method," and proceed to describe its throat being slit. What's actually happening is FAR more unique: The "old Mongolian method" is to make an incision just below the sternum, reach a hand in and physically HOLD the heart to stop it from beating, without spilling a single drop of blood. You can see this happening in your video, the nomad up to his elbow in the sheep's chest cavity. The rational for this is actually the most culturally interesting part. The spirit, or ghost, of an animal is said to be held in the blood, and if that blood is spilled onto the ground the sheep's ghost will warn the other livestock that they are not family members and pets of the nomads, and are instead their food. To the Mongols domestication is essentially a big trick they are pulling on these animals, and if word gets out they're destined for the stew pot the jig is up. Great documentary! Thank you!

Here is an idea... How about building rock structures, rock deams along the dry creek beeds this way you can build watering holes and make the ones already exists more productive, it also increases vegetation and bigger animals like the bear and the ship benefits from this rain management.

Here’s hoping for the creation if a safe place for the bears and for the people who love them to continue their efforts to save them. The school visit was very touching. I clearly remember when my son, who is now 40, learned about the plight of the Piping Plover at school when he was very small. It’s a lovely little sea bird which we see on the coast of the Eastern US. He was so upset. While they\ the birds have increased in numbers, decades later they remain endangered/threatened. That they are here at all is thanks to legislation and dedicated people like those in Mongolia trying to save the Gobi Bear. I remember when the Bald Eagle, the National bird of the US, nearly became extinct. It is now no longer endangered though still protected. Now that we have reached the tipping point in climate change, I’m glad I’m 72 and won’t see the full aftermath. My father, a research scientist (meteorologist) warned me this was coming when I was 18. Imagine what could have been accomplished for all living things if only people had listened to him and the other scientists trying to warn everyone only to be silenced. I truly fear for my grandchildren.

44:00 This is sort of conflicting as earlier in the documentary a nomad literally said there's not enough water for the nomads, and their heards, vs the wildlife, and said nomad even said "when we asked the biologists what to do, there was no good solutions", so isn't it contradictory to both say "we want to preserve these species and nomad eay of life" when the reality of the situation seems to be that natural resource extraction will be coming to that area, from China. Not sure how two competing factors for the natural environment will stablize any of the species there, not that I blame them, China is the one extracting the resources after all.

Well, the good news, the population has basically doubled if you read what researchers put out there. There have never been alot and for anyone that lives amongst bears or understands behavior, bad bear habitat equals less bears. The American Southwest has long had a strong population of bears, black bears of late and Grizzlies prior (humans removed them no argument there). The bears per square mile, however, are much less than say in ideal habitat in Alaska or Maine. they could be rebounding on several factors, but if they don't really hit up the local's livestock (very unlike Himalayan and Tibetan Brown bears whom can be numerous and carnivorous) and in areas that in a large country of only 3 million, well, who is there to mess with them? Despite the abused word Poacher coming up, no sane poacher is going to lie in wait for a Gobi bear unless he plans on not making any $. There are enough bear a few hundred kilometers north, again in a region with no people, in Mother Russia to satisfy those types and you'd not make a dent in that population. So here's to the Gobi Bear, whom has basically doubled in population and is going up. Not shown in the documentary was the feeding stations too, which seem to be doing wonders for them and other animals and probably boosting fertility rates. Let's hope it doesn't keep them too hooked at staying near those stations.

Amazing bear. We never got to see a Gobi bear on camera interacting with our hosts in the Gobi desert. Are you sure there are bears in Mongolia? Or are the short video images of bears from other parts of the world and not Mongolia. There are so many strange things in the media. For instance, an underdeveloped, third world country like Afghanistan would pick a fight with the most industrialized country in the world. I find it hard to believe a bear can survive in the Gobi desert where there isn't enough food for the bear to eat. But then there are people who claim that Iraq can make modern weapons of mass destruction. Is it that easy to become an industrialized country with a developed trading system? If so then why is the US, England, France, Germany, Japan, ... and only a handful of other countries responsible for creating the modern conveniences we enjoy? Somethings are possible. Somethings are impossible.
