There were some rumors that we didn't use the Goodyear tire on the ZL1 1LE for the test. That's not true! We used the Michelin Cup 2 tire only for the photo shooting and a set of brand new Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R for the whole test including the lap time. Why was the ZR1 as fast as Z06? The outside temperature was much higher than the temperature on the day we tested the Z06. You can read the whole story in new sport auto 8/2018.

Eigentlich ja enttäuschend, dass die ZR1 die selbe Zeit fährt wie die Z06. Schließlich hat sie über 100 PS mehr, 60% mehr Abtrieb und straffere Fahrwerksabstimmung. Da hätte ich schon eine um 2 Sekunden bessere Rundenzeit erwartet. ;) Aber in eurer Zeitschrift habt ihr die Gründe dafür ja ausführlich beschrieben. Wird denn ein Supertest mit der ZR1 kommen? Oder wird es den nicht geben, da sie offiziell in Deutschland nicht angeboten wird?

Ok tell me this. Why was the zl1 1le standard and the zr1 not? Another thing the automatic zr1 has a faster gear change than that of the poor skills of the driver in the zl1 1le. And my reason for calling him a driver with poor skills is because he went way off the track for both cars giving them both worse times the what they are truely capable of. That’s a simple apex curve to be taken at 73 miles per hour I mean come on. Anyways. Besides that not much to complain about same tires same driver, only if it was both standard or automatic.

Fairly simple, they used the fastest version of both cars. Zl1 1LE doesn't come in an auto the ZR1 does. The driver is a professional driver and the same driver they use for every test at this track. He has done a sub 7min nurburgring lap time, also won his class at 24hour nurburgring so is 100times a better driver then yourself. If you have ever been racing you use all the track if it allows so i hope you are more informed now. As to why both cars are so slow... well classic CHEVY to heavy and can't put power down.

It's a sign of the times when automatic is faster than manual. That camaro is a big old pudding of a car with good brakes/tires and a big old engine. Lots of understeer as well. a different transmission would not make that much difference to physics.

FrankMurphy - You are unequivically wrong, and clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Even the regular ZL1 matched the McClaren 650S on Willow Springs with the same pro driver behind the wheel and beat a 488 GTB that had Tristan Vautier behind the wheel. The ZL1 1LE has Multimatic DSSV dampers used in F1 cars, which is rougher but better for track use than the magnetic shocks in Ferrari's and other GM cars (that is old GM tech btw). All of the 1LE Camaro's from the V6 on up have set better lap times than more powerful cars.

Did you not look at my example? The standard ZL1 has summer tires, and is slower in a straight line than both of the cars I mentioned that it matched or beat on track. On VIR the summer tire 460hp Camaro SS 1LE beat the Audi R8 V10+ which is a lot faster in a straight line. The alpha chassis cars handle exceptionally well. The lap times here are not very reflective of what these cars are capable of.

I don't think this is a comparison so much as just showing both of their laps in the same video. Obviously since they are both Chevy's the Corvette is the top dog over the Camaro. It would be like if they did the same with a 911 GT3 vs a Cayman GT4. That said the ZL1 1LE is faster than the Grand Sport, and probably a better track car (for longer sessions) than the Z06.

It's possible, and certainly the ZL1 1LE is already faster than all of the non-supercharged Corvette's but I suspect that if they built something faster than the top dog Corvette (ZR1) then GM would tell them it costs too much and they have to cut cost, while sharing the teck with the Corvette team :p Still I think it works a lot better than what Porsche does, where they hamper the Cayman with tall gearing to make sure it won't be faster.

I don't know what makes a car a supercar, but if beating them doesn't, what does.... Either way, zr1 is so race focused and so fast just calling it a sportscar seems like a huge error. Oh Corvette can't be a supercar, because it's a Corvette and we don't get a fancy Ferrari esque vibe from it doesn't seem like valid reasoning to me because that is just really subjective and biased. I swear, if none of us were used to Corvettes and this was the first we ever saw noone would question it being a supercar.

How did you guys get a ZL1 in Europe. I thought it wasn't allowed because of the dive planes on the front bumper. Worrying about them hitting pedestrians. Even though the ZR1 is extremely faster than the ZL1. I think it was a unfair match-up because the ZR1 had a auto and the ZL1 had a stick.

It isn't but the few that have been imported the examiners turned a blind eye... it's history now, since from this year onwards the American cars aren't supposed to be able to meet emissions regulations any more I'm told... these cars are technically illegal which is why GM doesn't offer them in Europe and the few which have been imported and modified to "comply" with E. U. norms are in the Grey area.

This is a somewhat disappointing time for a ZR1. 1:06.90 is exactly the time Christian Gebhardt clocked on this track in a manual Z06 here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWfRgZJ6mrqAZ9k. The ZR1 should be significantly faster in every way than a Z06 and even faster as an auto. Gebhardt has run this track several times in Z06's clocking 1:08.7 on another run, so it's clear there can be around 2 seconds of variance based on car / conditions, even with the same driver.

Das Wetter können wir leider noch nicht beeinflussen. Es war warm, aber kein "30 Grad Plus". Wir testen unsere Testwagen dann, wenn wir sie bekommen können. Die ZR1 ging, wie oben in der Video-Beschreibung erklärt, mit den serienmäßigen Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 ZP an den Start. Für den Test gab es sogar zwei frische Reifensätze. Warum sie nicht schneller als die Z06 war, steht in der neuen sport auto 8/2018. Ab morgen neu am Kiosk!

sport auto stimmt dafür könnt ihr die Jahreszeit beeinflussen und dem entsprechend die Fahrzeuge testen zb. Könnte man performante gt2 rs und zr1 an dem selben Tag testen dann würden auch die Ergebnisse anders aussehen Fakt ist das der neue gt2 rs schneller wäre bzw. Natürlich wäre es klasse, wenn man alle Fahrzeug bei trockenen Winter- oder Herbsttemperaturen testen könnte. So funktioniert aber eine Zeitschrift nicht! Wir müssen das ganze Jahr über Hefte füllen und Tests produzieren! Daher drucken wir auch bei jedem Test die Asphalt- und Außentemperatur mit ab. Wir testen die Testfahrzeuge zu dem Zeitpunkt zu denen wir sie bekommen können. Es ist ein Wunder überhaupt eine ZR1 jetzt schon im Test in Deutschland zu sehen. Wie sicherlich bekannt ist, wird die ZR1 nicht mehr offiziell in Deutschland verkauft. Bei unserem Testwagen handelt es sich um ein Importfahrzeug von Geigercars. Übrigens die erste ZR1 überhaupt in Europa derzeit.

I drive an automatic car. I wish I had a manual. But people who special order automatic transmissions in their track cars are not whimps! Some people just want the fastest variation of that car. And the automatic is usually faster with more gears.

Cant compare which is better until those same drivers swap cars as well. Thats like watching INDY, Nascar, 1/4 races and just saying that the car that wins is the best. Not true at all, the drivers can change a lot of what happens. For this video specifically: They were only 2.7 seconds apart from eachother. Out of the 67 to 70 seconds lap times were talking about a 4% time difference. Yes, the drivers sure as hell would make up a difference of 4%. Now if the Corvette beat the Camaro by 20 seconds or the other way around, then we could say the driver wouldnt make that significant of a difference and we could for sure know which car is faster.

I raced this exact zl1 on the mountain pass and completely gapped it in the twisties. As for straight line? No contest. But it’s was pretty fast. Fastest domestic I’ve raced. But it still lost by a margin.

Yes it is. Even the ZL1 ticks all the boxes for an exotic supercar in Europe, albeit in a muscle car body. It beats out a McLaren so there can't be much doubt.

This is a great test...I'll add my amateur Corvette Z06 and ZL1 1LE HPDE junkie $0.02 - there were a couple of spots where I think you could have left the ZL1 in gear and made 2 unnecessary shifts. Again, just my opinion, and I don't know that particular track. The ZR1 would still be faster (as it should be), but the gap might be a little closer. Enjoyed the test! Thanks!

Mustang and Camaro really upped there game. It was unheard of to hear and see a mustang and camaro smoking most cars on street and drag racing but especially on circuits against pro touring cars. The camaro zl1 1le and mustang shelby gt350r is such an insane difference between the 2000 mustang gt model and last gen before the hihaytis of the Camaro 98 to 02. Especially if you raced the original 96 lt1 Camaro

Die ZR1 bewegt sich quasi in der gleichen Zeit um den Kurs wie die Z06. Ich denke, das Potenzial der ZR1 konnte nicht voll abgerufen werden, was keine Kritik am Fahrer ist. Halt noch ein jungfräuchliches Auto mit wenig KM. Wiederholt mal den Lauf im voll eingefahrenen Zustand, Adaptionswerte zurücksetzen und dann seht ihr bessere Zeiten 👍

Chevy already did that and documented it. As if that weren't enough in and of itself, Chevy fine-tunes and tests the ZL1 and ZL1 1LE on the Nürburgring as part of the standard development process. GM even has a dedicated suspension engineer who specialises in tuning for and testing at the Nürburgring.

Omg I didn’t see that coming. The zr1 has a 100hp more and automatic. I thought the zl1 had it in the bag. Try the same test with a manual z06.

Here is the truth of the matter, The camaro team built a Z06 destroyer in the ZL1 1LE, and it embarrassed the corvette team. Now they had to catch up, throw a(looks like it doesent belong) tail on the ZR1, and more cooling area up front with 105 more hp for 2× the $ LOL ! The ZL1 1LE IS A steal for 70K period. Better design the C8 better ! Best looking years was the C6 Z06/ZR1 !

My only complaint is they should have either used the auto in the ZL1 or used the 7 speed manual in the ZR1

I honestly don’t know which one I’d choose 😂 probably the ZL1 just because I’m kind of tall, they’re just both such amazing cars. The ZR1 is unrivaled as far as sports cars go, the Demon and GT500 just can’t compete

Need to compare like vehicles. Auto vs auto, or stick vs stick. And some goon did an article for youtube and said the ZR has a 10 spd auto. Nope, it has as n 8 spd.

You should compare Auto VS Auto or Manual VS Manual. Driving a manual is much more difficult and the Camaro is slower to begin with.

If this content test is true man 3 sec difference between 140k and 70k top performing chevys. 70k price difference put 20k add 150hp into the camaro and a pristine on point driver and will take that zr1 a run for the money. both cars are awesome!!! no complaints here.
