8th named, 5th hurricane, 2nd major, costliest and deadliest storm officially of the 2024 NATL season. It's interesting how, despite the strongest Big Bend landfall ever, most deaths and damages occurred in North Carolina, where some cities were swept away.

The Big Bend area is about the least-populated area of the state, with some of the lowest by-county populations anywhere in Florida. It's not that surprising that the human impact there was relatively minor, given the sparse population. It's also expected that the highest rainfall totals and thus the worst riverine and flash flooding would be felt in the southern Appalachians, which include the highest points in all of eastern North America, given the orographic effect combined with the storm's slowdown in that region. Of greater interest is the human-made part of this disaster, I think. Because there is always a human element that makes them worse than they'd otherwise be.

This storm impacted my area of east tennesse, my friends houses got washed away. This is easily the worst diaster to impact the area of east tennesse/west north carolina. Its so sad. Thankfully where we live we didnt get any damage. But you can still see the impacts of helene today and will for many months to come.

Helene is one of the only storms I've actually experienced, because I live in Inland Georgia. I remember tracking the invest and experiencing Francine, and this storm was... horrifying for me. You look down south and saw Atlanta, completely flooded. You look north and see Asheville flooded. I stayed awake the entire night for floods and tornadoes. I went to sleep though, but that might have been one of the scariest nights of my entire life. I haven't gone through a hurricane like this ever. Not even Michael came close to this. Helene's first death counts seemed minimal but then it reaches the hundreds and surpassed everything.. Initially I thought only 20 people would be missing but reports came out showing more people were missing from Helene that.. HAIYAN. Helene isn't a storm to forget for generations. This is a storm that has shaped the Appalachia, the Big Bend Region, and really everyone who was affected. Helene was the monster no one expected.. and too add further to the horrible stuff, a different monster would come later. sorry for yapping i like yapping

Ah boy - Hurricane Helene... An absolutely devastating storm that plowed right into Florida's Panhandle (around the same area Idalia hit last year), and later on, stalled in the SE US, causing mass destruction and a tragically high death toll. Definitely a storm to be remembered for many to come....

Most of its destruction was result of mass rainfalls as it's speed was moving fast inland as some states are very prone to floods so incase most hurricanes flood damage are caused from brown ocean effect and stalling while this one was quiet a unusual one.

Hurricane Helene is one of 3 majors which left catastrophic impacts in the 2024 ATL season, along with Beryl and Milton. Helene has broken record after record, such as the strongest and most intense landfalling Big Bend hurricane on record, deadliest since Maria, costliest since Ian, and the costliest in the Carolinas on record! HELL, even combining ALL past Carolinas hurricane damages (especially with Florence, Hugo, Floyd, etc.) they may not stand up to Helene!

It’s all about the path after landfall. Just compare it to Idalia another Cat 4 that hit the same spot. It went out to sea and wasn’t destructive enough to be retired.

Pretty much don't need a very strong storm to cause this level of death and destruction. Other examples like TS Vera (1989), Typhoon Linda (1997), TS Harriet (idk what year), or even TS Remal of this year, and the list goes on of weak but destructive storms.

It's remind me of Typhoon Herb in 1996 and Doksuri in 2023 that bring catastrophic rain in Hebei Province. Large storms can bring disaster to people who think they would never infuluenced by tropical cyclone.

Typhoon Herb is the most costlist Typhoon in Mainland China before 2023 (more than ¥65 billion) by CNY and that in Taiwan before 2009. In 2024, large storm Gaemi is not so costlist as Doksuri, but it still kill thousands people in north Korea far from it's path.
