I've taken many people to the velodrome, I find that you either love it or hate it, pretty much everybody is terrified when they see the banking, fixed gear, no brakes, and I've had many friends do 3 or 4 laps and walk off, I've had a couple who simply refuse to give it a go. Well done for trying Amy, for the record, I would never even attempt a 24 hour TT

Amy, that velodrome is a dream come true for me. I used to ride in a velodrome when I was a teenager, and I loved it. Keep trying. Get enough speed and try to ride following the black line. When you master it and get used to the fixed gear, go and try to ride over the red line. It is very fun. Thanks for this video.

You can do it, Amy. Don’t forget that being scared is normal. Being brave is being scared and doing something anyway!

So sweet. Amy was more nervous looking at Kyle hitting the steep banks than he appeared doing it. The track looks like a good way to overcome some fears by facing them. This one is quite a piece of architecture too.

I could feel Amy's heart beating through the screen; good job giving it a try. Reminds me of my first time speed skating at the Olympic track in SLC, UT; even though I'm a lifelong hockey player I was pretty nervous at first.

I loved my taster session. It was delayed due to Covid for two years. You are so brave when doing your long rides, I thought you would love it. Once I had got up the top once I couldn’t stop. It was the fixed wheel that scared me. I did mine at the London Velodrome.

Hi Amy and Kyle, what a video, you faced your fear, you may not have gone as high as Kyle, however you did give it a try and came away safe 👍 you pushed yourself to do it, and you knew the limits of what were prepared to try. Well done to you both you both achieved something that you can be proud of 👌
@vermilioninkАй бұрын
Amy. As a fellow anxious person and fixie-avoider, I really hope you might have another go at the velodrome in 2025! I too am all about a long lovely scenic day touring, and would choose a massive audax every time, but there's also something really powerful about just flat out gunning it on a velodrome. If you let yourself just fully go for it, your strength and momentum will take you up those boards before you realize and it's exhilarating. If you can climb multiple Alps in a day you can definitely do this!

Hehehe well done, great fun to watch. Amy, i think the coach was spot on about you overthinking it. My favorite line is "im not being dramatic" while being dramatic 😅 Give it a couple of weeks and go back and try the velodrome again and i guarantee you won't find it so daunting. A few more after that and im sure you will be flying around the track with a beaming smile on your face 😊

Great and funny video from you both. Kyle, well done mate - I've done some kilo's against the clock and some team time-trialing, so I know what It's like on the velodrome especially the first few times, it's quite disorientating, but if you keep the power and the speed on, after lots of laps, you begin to wonder what you were worried about in the first place. Amy, well done for giving it a go, you don't have to like it, but it does get easier the more laps you do and get accustomed to it. Look forward to your next adventure and you both meeting Laura and Jason.

I tried the Derby velodrome for the first time last year with my Road Club from Mansfield. We had a two hour session. The coach there was very good. By the end he had us right at the top of the banking on the straights. It's surprising how much extra effort is needed entering the bends even when just on the black line, but you get the payback as the bends run out. A nervous but enjoyable experience 😀

@1ytt742Ай бұрын
I thought Kyle would enjoy that and he should definitely go back for some fun. I used to race on a velodrome when I was 14-15. You could get used to it. It's intimidating when you're not used to it and Derby Velodrome would be a lot more intimidating than Welwyn, where I raced. You not being used to fixed wheel won't help either, especially one without brakes. Just need to take your time riding around the bottom and building up confidence. Ride to your comfortable limit then take a break. Rince and repeat. "Controlled Exposure." I think I would be intimidated if I went back to a velodrome now, so I would need to build up my confidence. But once you start using the banking to swoop down to get on someone's wheel etc, it's good fun! Who knows, maybe you two will end up riding some Audax on fixed wheel bikes?

That is the funniest video of Amy and Kyle I've ever seen. Can Amy tell us in as many ways as possible that track riding is "not for me" good on you for giving it a go, your face when Kyle got to the top of the track ,priceless. Did my 1st ever track session a few months back - can’t believe how much I was bricking it to start - only 3 of us turned up which was epic so we had the place to ourselves basically ( Geraint Thomas velodrome in Newport ) once I switched my brain off I loved it - oddest thing was once you were up high you are automatically leaning / riding at the right angle without knowing it but your mind it telling you to lean - all very odd. Will definitely go back - biggest fear was and will be remembering to keep peddling. I was to scarred to do a full gas effort in case of the above - would not have ended well 😂

I'm missing a patch of skin on my knee and shoulder from our concrete velodrome. All the track bikes have tires that are too skinny for me and I tried riding twice but pinch flatted 6 or 7 tires. My whole experience was changing tubes lol. The last flat happened high on the banking and I went for a lovely ride down the slope after smacking my helmet against the ground. Seems like a sport only for light people

I used to help instruct new riders at our local track for several years. Some struggle with confidence to try but by helping with the challenge in parts most will do it. But there's little point in trying if you have already decided you can't do it. Would you not try mountain biking for fear of being hit by a random tree? Every day we all do things that involve some risk. You wouldn't go out the front door otherwise. When our track opened 20 years ago there were only three indoor tracks in Canada. To have a world class facility so close and not give it another go is an opportunity lost. You have the skills to do it. Even if you decide not to do it again it will open you to a unique experience.

I suppose the same rules would apply when you ride a wall on mtb. Speed/momentum and then just lean with the corner, and not against. Then its easy
@mracer8Ай бұрын
The truth is you are in greater danger of sliping riding on the apron around the corner then if you just get on the banking itself! as long as you are riding with just a bit of speed! and don't make sharp crazy handlebar movement! you be 100% safer then riding on the street for sure!!
