I think the questions are answered now. Having a 5 pole armature and proper bearings makes it the ultimate XO4. One of those 'if only' moments. I think I am a little envious. As you say, it also goes to show how good the standard motor is and I often think how proud the original developers must be to see their inventions running 50 or 60 years later and still doing a good job. I love things that last a lifetime. Excellent fun series. 😊

That's a great upgrade, so much smoother take off with the 5 pole, and the maroon coaches are splendid with there silver roofs. All the best.

Totally agree with you about the x03-x04 motors. They just keep running. I have many locos with these motors and love servicing them. I have a few spare ones and often keep a lookout for more at toy fairs.

Thanks for watching the video, it's always handy having a couple of spare motors about, it's easy to swap one in and fix the problem item later. Take care, all the best to you

That is great to see how well the 5-pole motor with ball racing adjustments works. It is also interesting to compare the inner mechanism of the late 1960s Britannia with the early one from 1961 I was given. It has a ceramic tube for the smoke oil up to the chimney and no Synchro Smoke gears. It runs well, however it doesn't like System 6 points so I would need to make a separate layout for it.

Thanks for watching, the Seuthe Smoke Unit is a nice item and works well in the earlier models. I bet your early Britannia has slightly larger wheel flanges that play up with the System 6 points. You could always look out for a later set of wheels second-hand. All the best to you

Thanks for showing these two locos running, very interesting to see the difference, I suggest it does go someway to explaining why Triang stuck with the XO4, even though they were getting into higher detail the extra cost for a five pole to customers at the time, who probably wouldn't appreciate the performance advantage, ruled it out. Nice to see though.

Thanks for watching and commenting Paul, you are probably right about the cost, I think the motor served them well enough and in good condition the original X04's run so well anyway. Best regards to you

There is certainly a noticeable improvement with the 5 pole motor, it’s a shame they are so hard to get hold of. I look forward to see the modified motors in other locomotives. Thanks for sharing, all the best. Rob

Hello Mr. Snooze. Both locos ran very well but you are right in that the 5 pole motor is smoother. I couldn't help wondering what the start would have looked like with my momentum controller. No matter the content of your weekly videos it is always informative and entertaining. Thank you for sharing your model railway experiences with us. Regards, David

Well done. The two Britannia locos run really well. The 5 pole should have a bit more tourque so run slower? My working model was run recently and was puffing smoke. Oil was put in many years ago by the previous owner I found out when I checked. Goes to show that the smoke box still works. Stay safe. Mon from Monsville Railways

Thanks Mon, you are right the 5 pole has more low down power, I'm amazing the oil lasted in your loco, I love the smell of smoke oil getting hot. Best regards to you

Another great video on this brilliant motor, you think you might convert some more motors with ball racers? Maybe something with nylon bearings like the Class 31 but with ball racers instead or are we not there yet?

very informative comparison Mr Snooze. I for one will be putting in an order for the Slot car racing ball race bearings and bush. During the course of the comparison, did the motor current reduce at all as the mechanisms bedded in ? In response to your request, my vote is for either the R.150 B12 or the R.850 A3 pacific.

Hello, I think the main benefit of these bearings is smoothness and noise reduction. I'm not really seeing any measurable current draw advantages. Take care, best regards to you

If you are not going to use them, it might be a good idea to remove the smoke units. They add friction to both models, and their differential drag might be significant enough to invalidate your comparison. Also, it might help to run the locos for a half an hour or so to get some idea of the heating characteristics of the mechanisms under standard conditions, in this case the 'mechanism' being the Triang/Hornby X 04 mech. Then one day when you get an anomaly it will be immediately apparent - before some kid starts a fire with it. I must look at your re-bearing presentation for enjoyment and to hear any comments about absorbing thrust. Much enjoyed; always remember - The whole world is but a Meccano set. Peter

Hello Peter, great thoughts on Meccano, during lockdown I did have a bit of a session or two building items. Very relaxing and fulfilling I might say. I usually always remove the smoke element and store it safely for future use. No point burning it out for no reason. Sometimes I take the gear off too. I do like to run a bit of smoke occasionally, you cant beat that Tri-ang smoke smell. Take care, best regards to you

@@MrSnooze more like the recent funeral. Or maybe the London marathon. Also, the work you have done with the ball-races is a great bit of model engineering.
