Getting this set was, probably, the most fantastic thing in my young life. The situation was 1967 “Britannia + Pullmans”, 1968 “Freightmaster Set”, and then in 1969 - this! It was a complete surprise too as it was something Mum & Dad said they couldn’t afford that year. I remember, as if it was yesterday, receiving this set and it was a present from my Great Aunt in Bridlington who bought my presents from “Kirbys” model shop in Chapel Street. Whenever we visited her she bought me a coming present and a going home present. I remember her taking me to the shop to “choose whatever I wanted” (except those things that were “for Father Christmas”!). It was usually a Matchbox car/Lorry etc! I also recall being amazed by the “Large Station Set”. It arrived for my Birthday the next year. I knew exactly where it had come from because Kirbys wrapped their goods in brown paper. Gt Auntie had her own red wax seal and always posted with white string around the box. That child-like thrill has never diminished every time I buy something. Very happy memories. Thanks for sharing.

Loved the set, and catalogue review. Seems to me that it perfectly illustrates the way the hobby has moved away from play and imagination toward a focus more about representation and emphasis on accuracy. I lovely contemporary models, but I wonder how many actually get played with and enjoyed that way. The great thing is the hobby of toy trains/model railways has a place for everyone and every approach.

I remember as a kid in the early 60’s going through the Triang and Marklin catalogs as I was lucky to have both brands and making a lot of ‘wish lists’. I still run the same locos today. My Marklin set is 65 years old and still runs nicely.

Good morning Stewart, it's a great pastime looking through these catalogues. Terrific to hear you have both Tri-ang and Marklin. I never did get any Merklin, the closest I got was to see some in action in a display at Hamleys back in the mid-70s and coming away with the catalogue it's such beautiful stuff... The fact that the cars are MINT and still there is amazing, I keep looking for the old Tyco and life like car carriers and usually the wagons themselves are missing pieces are the cars are either broken or missing.
@trainsontuesday3 жыл бұрын
That was wonderful Oscar. I'm not sure if I liked the set or the catalogue the most. I have to admit that the catalogue had me drooling a little and making a wish list. There were so many different Minic cars but I only ever had three different ones until a few years ago when I got a Hillman Imp. My first two real cars were Imps, the start of a long antagonistic co-existence with vehicles that continues to this day. I digress, Your CAR-A-BELLE set running around on the carpet made me want to do the same today but unfortunately I don't have the time. Thank you for another trip back to my childhood. Regards, David.
@oscarpaisley3 жыл бұрын
Good morning David, that's the trouble with catalogues! back at school in the mid-70s, a friends dad had an Imp, it was very bright orange. As you say there are many variations of the Minic cars and they are a whole different set of items to collect! some have become very sort after, I think they must have made Tri-ang-Hornby quite a few pennies over the years. Thanks again take care. Oscar

These sets were a piece of marketing genius. The new owner will love it, but soon get bored and start craving extra track and wagons to make things more interesting. I know it worked with me, and every Christmas and birthday was spent in anticipation of the next wonderful red box. It was just the same with Lego and Meccano.

Good morning Roger I think you are spot on there, I bet this got many into the hobby. Hi Oscar, There can't be many RS62s around these days in that condition, very nice. Imagine the response to opening the box and seeing all those brightly coloured cars. Fortunately/unfortunately I am of an age where I can probably identify all of these cars without looking underneath ;))) Also great trawl through the catalogue, I have the track cleaning brush which is one of these oddities/gimmicks that we looked at and relied on an adult to explain the need or not. Hi there. I got this great little set when I was 12 in 1969. Different mix of cars, and it did come with the super 4 power clip and the shorter wheelbase brake van (without the chimney). If memory serves me correctly it had the Tri-ang Hornby Edition 14 catalogue in the box. All for the princely sum of £5/17/6. By the way - I still have the set but the box is rather tatty nowadays- but the main thing is the engine still runs. Can't beat those indestructible X04 motors. Thanks for the video

Great stuff Oscar! This evokes so many happy memories with my uncle Roy as a young boy as he had this very set. I recently acquired a Freightmaster set from a very nice chap n Sydenham who, unbelievably, “threw in” a near-mint Car-a-belle wagon and cars (basically as he realised I wasn’t a trader and genuinely wanted the set 😜) and a level crossing! I couldn’t believe my luck! 😎 That catalogue is a lovely thing too. I think at the time it was actually cheaper and easier to print a clear painted-over photograph than produce colour pictures. Either way, it is so wonderfully “of its age” and a great thing to see 🙂 Have a great weekend mate 👍🍻🍀

I have quite a few although they are not pristine but I do like them. I have a CR Single in great condition with a box and a rake of the .matching red and white coaches. The loco has sone trouble getting through Peco points and that might be weight problem as it tends to rock a bit. It could also be the wheel arrangement and the Magnahesion which I have heard one could remove it? FYI Chambs123 is selling off all of his collection on ebay and I know they sre all in first class condition. Regards Charlie

Hi Oscar. I sort of got this train set piecemeal. I already had the engine and guards van. My father bought me 3 of the car transporters as a present. As for the price on the catalogue If it was anything like my local model shop when they went out of date and the new catalogues came in they sold the old ones of cheap. Hence the drop from a shilling to 3 old pence(3d)You are correct about the weathering on Old Smokey. It was probably the first ever factory finished engine to be weathered. The only problem though is that they only weathered the engine and not the tender. Old Smokey was the first ever train set I was bought. . Have a great time. loved the video. all the best Ged

Wouldn't have been much fun if the parents who bought the set didn't buy a power controller too. In the early days Triang and Hornby seemed to be reluctant include power controllers of any kind. Was there a reason for this? It certainly benefited the H & M range of controllers. Nearly all the shops in Sheffield stocked them for the range. But they were not cheap!
@oscarpaisley3 жыл бұрын
Good morning Graham thanks again for watching, it could have been a bit of a disappointment as you say. I'm sure I've read that mains power units were not sold as part of the sets to get around the prevailing Purchase Tax legislation at the time and perhaps to keep the headline price down for the sets. I think if the mains controller was part of the set the combined items attracted Purchase Tax as a whole, but if sold separately they did not. I think they marketed their controllers separately under the name "Tri-ang power units" I'm not sure how their units were priced compared to H&M it would be interesting to know. It's a fascinating subject, I think the Purchase Tax legislation changed in the 70s. Take care. Oscar
