In Today's video I did the famous Yasso 800s workout to try and predict my current marathon fitness. The idea of this workout is as follows:
1. Run 10 x 800m on the track
2. The rest in between reps is the same time as the rep itself
3. your time = your marathon prediction (2:30 800m = 2:30 marathon)

I never did a large quantity of 880's but I remember I did something like: 2 mile - 9:46, walk a lap, mile - 4:49, walk a lap , a couple of halves in 2:30, then a couple of 440's in 65,64. I never could break 2:30 for the marathon, I ran 2:33 three times. I was under a 2:30 pace in two of those but crashed and burned in the last miles..... If I had to do it again I would drop down and try and improve my 3 mile- 6-mile times, then move into a marathon training phase. On race day I would try and run an even pace then try and pick it up the last 10k. Best of luck in your quest for a sub 2:30 !

This was a great workout for me 5 weeks before a 2:55 Marathon recently, nailing 11x800m @ 2'53" avg each lap with 1min recovery jog between reps. (the recovery is important - too long or too short makes a HUGE difference) A few caveats on this: This workout predictor assumes you've done the time on feet and can hold a pace for 30+km's at least though. No point in getting a good 5km runner smashing this then trying to run 42km without ever going long before.

Even a good 5K runner would struggle because it is quite demanding and long 10*800m 8km at intense volume.

@@paxundpeace9970 I dunno about that. Most marathon time predictors estimate an equivalent time/pace for the 5k roughly around this method too. Eg VDOT and Daniel’s say a 2:55 marathoner should have roughly a 5k @ 18:14 / 3’39” pace (which is bang on the 2’56” ish pace for the yasoo) So a 5k should be able to hold this for 10x800’s with a breather between each set.

Bart was the senior running editor for Runner’s world magazine. The idea of the 800’s I think is more for the novice runner to build up to 10 reps. They definitely make you faster. We were running 3:20’s and none of us old guys could run a marathon that fast but definitely helped speed. For a twist try switching lanes for each rep 1-6 then back down. Makes it a little more challenging and fun. Love your content.

I was sceptical about the Yasso’s too. But I must admit, when I did the session 2 weeks before my last marathon, where I was hoping to run 3:10, the reps were coming out at about 2:58 average and I ended up running the marathon in 2:59. Maybe just a coincidence, but maybe if you’re training well, it can show us when we might be a bit more fit than we think we are! 🤷‍♂️

Considering how 'short this workout is' it goves good indication because you have to run it ad an higher pace then marathon but for shorter duration. 5k or 10km runner might enjoy 4 or 6 fast reps and then gone lose pace similar to what would happen in a marathon.

I'm wondering when I'll be doing this particular workout on my training to take a crack at a sub 2:30 marathon next year. Recently did 4x1200m at 7000' averaging 4:05 and felt pretty good. Currently focused on lowering my half marathon time as a part of the build-up.

I find it a little optimistic but very close. I don’t stop after each interval but recovery run for an equal amount of time. 2 mile warm up and 1/2 cool down makes this an 11 mile workout

As an indicator you should see the slowest repetion so 2:24 or 2:25. Your times were a bit jiggly. You are in under 2:30 shape for sure. I Would even go and say 2:28 with huge certainty considering you did the workout at such a sunny and warm looking day. (Would hope for such weather myself some time again)

Yes but running start for each rep. Not sure this is the way it's supposed to be done. You must gain 1 to 2 seconds with a running start.

oh daaaang, I thought you would have definitely heard of these before. and yes Bart Yasso, was a dude.., and he wrote about running for a while too. its a workout, its just a workout. I like 6 x 600s myself.

I find out running à marathon is a different ball game. I run. 10 km in 42,minutes. And half marathon in 1. 34. However when it comes to a marathon, I always end up walking after 30 km. I'm 64 years.
