does the appellation mountains keep the hurricane from moving westward, after making landfall in Florida? hope that surfside rescue(&demolition of that apt) doesn't get negatively impacted...

Typically they follow trade winds. Then the location of high and low pressure zones and the weather fronts they create determine track. "Surface maps" or "surface analysis" can show you location of high and low pressure zones. There's a lot more that goes into forecasting track. I'm just giving basic info as I know it. Mountainous terrain severely degrades tropical systems, though, by the time it reached the Appalachians it'll have been over land long enough to have already severely degraded unless it's a category 4 or 5.
