I forgot who said it, I think Karl Jobst, but "The best players don't cheat to get a better time, they cheat to get a better time faster." People keep forgetting that Riolu was one of the best players in the world, he could compete in the TM Grand League and other online events. I guess he just did not have to patience to grind a track for dozens, if not hundrets of hours to achieve a new world record. I do not want to excuse him, it is still despicable to cheat, because that way he robs the title from players that actually put in the work and time to grind out a new world record, but it does not invalidate this critizism.

It's because they're simply subtracting velocity to make you slower as the expectation is that this will bring velocity toward 0, but when your velocity is already negative it makes you faster. All they have to do in this case is switch between adding and subtracting velocity based on current velocity being positive or negative.

Very well done. :) So much of the information put into such a relatively short video. There are only minor things that I would have added or that maybe come a bit unclear. For example: - It sounds as if you could use the backwards trick on many maps, but in fact the maps need to have certain criterias so that backwards can be faster. In Canyon it was difficult to find any map and back then as well as nowadays: there is no Canyon campaign map where the record drives backwards. The first maps where I got a record were multilap maps, so that I don't have the time loss at the start. -Starting with kb only makes sense when you drive forwards and turn around in a start jump. You can’t wiggle backwards with normal keyboard. But still: using multiple devices with different dxtweak settings would be the solution. The wiggles are most powerful the more you steer, just right before sliding out. If you use extreme settings of dxtweak just for the high velocity in the end, you will have bad wiggles as you don’t steer enough. Only with a joystick or steering wheel it could work to only use one device for the best possible outcome due to its precision. Otherwise you would need to have multiple devices, each one with different max steering for the different speeds.. but then the question is: is that cheating then? - In 2017 we already knew that backwards driving is still faster, but without knowing about the wiggling it took just very long until the car got fast enough. We did that on short circle maps on an online server. Also on Valley A05: without wiggling it needs 10 Laps, but then you will be faster than forwards (as you need to steer in the 2 corners each lap anyway). So you could beat Dedi records on Multilap maps online in TimeAttack. But for normal start to finish the acceleration to these speeds took too long.

With that being said this is crazy fast considering it's in reverse, and for it to still be a thing undiscovered 6 years after the patch is crazy too. And it became a catch phrase and then I first discovered "glitches" in 2007 from a YT video when I was trying to get on top of the building in Crossfire CoD4 map. Someone simply called it that and it stayed I guess. But look at the title of the video and now look back at yourself, do you feel stupid now? They called it a bug first. I am not gonna be trying to sound like a smartass by correcting them.

I remember seeing the Valley A05 multilap WR using backwards driving and trying it myself, and never getting anywhere close to a success. Reminds me of the unholy speed tanks could get in 3rd Gen GTA Games when driving and shooting backwards. Their was technically a speed cap for driving backwards, but it only disabled your accelaration, just like in TM, but everytime you shot backwards you got a small speed boost (instead of while steering), which stacked with every shot.

It's sad because he was a great player even when he didn't cheat. He could have had a path to redemption and a lot of people would have cheered him on to make a comeback. He'd obviously have to make amends to the community and show that he's changed before that would happen though which is only fair. Instead he's just refused to admit it when he was confronted with damning evidence that proved he cheated and attacked the most beloved member of the community over it, which was the worst thing he could have done. It's just a huge shame.

In 2015 for the ZRT Trackmania Cup 3 Zerator (creator of this cup) made a backward map where drifting backwards gave insane speed and that was the purpose of the map called “PB (eternity)” and the cup was on Stadium

The really shocking part is, Nadeo almost _never_ does any bugfixes to car physics after the release of a particular edition of the game, in order to maintain deterministic physics backwards compatibility with replays made in prior versions. So for the "Mater Method" to be severe enough that they _did_ have to risk breaking backward compatibility... that's an achievement unto itself.

As a casual trackmania player I find it crazy that people think driving backwards is silly! Watching the perspective of the slower car at the end as the backwards driver swerves back and forth at blinding speeds is inspirational, and I'm amazed people are able to do things backwards with less control at higher speeds

Surprised it took so long to find the bug especially after the patch. With a lot of games, speedrunners are digging into the code and analyzing things extremely closely, and trying everything they can think of. After any update they're immediately looking at exactly how it was fixed and whether that change introduced any new quirks they can abuse.

It's funny to see that when a new gamebreaking tech that revitalizes it is found people quickly want it either banned or patched when, IMO, they should get a separate leaderboard. Having different options to play is always better than having only one. Talks about fairness are just there because people don't want to learn something new.

The issue with TM2 games is all the times are stored in Nadeo/Ubisoft servers like TM2020 with an in game leaderboard. And like TM2020 its the standard for record times. The issue is they're not very likely to update TM2 and remove all the backwards times anytime soon, and definitley doubt a seperate leaderboard either. Since they'd have to sort every run.

@@OrsoBruno we have trackmania exchange already for seeing records outside of the game. But as we saw with the recent hack even that isn't always reliable with how long the site was down. Hopefully we can find a good compromise. But the TM2 community isn't nearly as a big anymore, so we'll just have to wait and see where we go with it. My main issue with it as an example is the whole DX Tweak thing. We just got a new rule saying third party programs to limit steering isn't cash money in TM2020.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the similarity to the coast car from TMS/TMUF yet. Coast car also gains a ridiculous amount of speed if you drive it backwards while pressing forwards and wiggling. However, you need to be on a turbo. That technique is used on almost all modern stunt tracks which have the coast car.

However the thought of a sedan driving 500mph, not to mention traveling thousands of feet in the air, is completely absurdist and nearly satirical. Because of that my joke points at the absurd perspective, how Nadeo will hastily update driving backwards as if it was wrong. I understand I’m not considering how the car accelerates rapidly while driving backwards, because it was a joke in a KZbin comment and I didn’t care to think too deeply into this. reminds me of accelerated back hopping in half life 2, where a patch attempted to stop players from gaining great speed through bunnyhopping (a technique dating back to quake 1) by reducing velocity once you reach a certain speed. they didn't realize that this was actually an increase in backwards speed, so now the primary movement tech in half life 2 involves jumping backwards at much greater speeds than possible before

I love how the Trackmania games have all the same bugs/oversights as 90s games. We had the wall acceleration,like Doom, now the backward acceleration oversight that lets you BLJ in Mario 64. Tbh so long as it takes skill to master, why bother patching it out?

In the instance of the original backwards driving, I think it was patched out because it DIDN'T take skill to master, just a controller and dxtweak. And aside from being busy with TM2020, the backwards wiggle does require skill, so I think it should be fair game. Also, technically the BLJ was patched out in the Shindou version of SM64, which is the version that got ported for 3D All Stars.

New Trackmania titles only "update" the art, sounds and graphics, the game's code for the car physics and everything about the gameplay itself is the same as back in the original except they switch the numbers around for the speed/acceleration/grip/turn rate/grip limit, etc; the gameplay itself is all the same simplistic 90's code since the beginning.

This makes sense to me as a development oversight. In real cars, reverse often has an extremely low gear ratio, providing excellent torque. I'm pretty sure most cars have even lower gear ratio in reverse than in 1st gear. This means reverse should provide the highest torque, which translates to theoretically, extremely high acceleration when you floor it. The problem IRL is that you trade torque for maximum speed. So if you floored it in reverse, yes you'd accelerate very quickly... But only to a very low top speed before you hit the engine's rev limiter. And unlike driving forwards, you dont have a bunch of gear ratios to upshift to, youre stuck with that one very low gear ratio. This is a very intentional design choice by auto manufacturers. Reverse is used almost exclusively for parking, or getting out of parking, which requires low speed precision. This then requires that reverse only has a very low speed regime, meaning changes in throttle position result in very small changes in speed... Which then leads to a very low gear ratio. The extra torque from a low gear ratio is simply an unintended side effect. As a developer, modelling this high acceleration is useful to the player. A dev would expect a player to only use reverse if they've somehow messed up and come to a stop against a wall. High acceleration reverse helps the player very quickly recover, and get back on track to continue the race. ... A development oversight here would be to not model any form of rev limit to the reverse gear... Meaning the digital car can just continue that insanely high acceleration indefinitely to speeds far higher than the better modelled forward gears can achieve. Perhaps the devs didnt think about this, because, well... Who would ever want to drive backwards for longer than a few seconds in a recovery situation? They maybe literally didnt think to limit the maximum speed of reverse, because they didnt envision any situation a player would try using reverse for longer than a couple seconds. ... This does actually break the game, because it means that reverse not only has the best acceleration than any other gear, but also that it has no top end rev limit... Why would you ever want to drive forward, reverse is inherently the fastest way to drive at that point. It's the best of both worlds (unlike the real world, where it's the best of only one).

I get the impression that they modeled it a bit unrealistically (probably to save resources) and just used a quick approximation. They fixed the driving backward thing by adding a rule that as your speed approaches -250 your acceleration falls to 0, but didn't account for being able to turn around while already past that and essentially get negative acceleration. But I'm just guessing. I haven't seen the code or anything.
