One problem after the next one, but it sure feels good when things go right.

Gotta love the empty beer bottles in the instrumentation panel. Or the old beetle front wheels with tractor ties wrapped around them. Or the homemade tracks. Fun stuff. :)

Man, That's some soft soil right there. Your rescue rig didn't even notice that tractor back there as you pulled it out. Great video.

The first tracks were invented by a farmer for his tractor to keep it from sinking in the wet soil. The military had a problem replacing horses with wheeled vehicles because they got stuck too easily, just like tractors. When the farmer went to demonstrate his new invention, the tank came swiftly after. The reason why few tractors have tracks is because they cost more than a wheel, require more maintenance, need a bigger engine to turn a full-tracked vehicle, and don't drive well on roads.

That's the ultimate vehicle! I can't believe how easy it pulled that tractor out!

Cool video. It's like watching a fullsize version of a scale RC video that was made to look like a fullsize movie. (The same type of camera work is in a lot of RC videos).

Well, maybe you should think about getting your friend to build you another like that vw, but make it so it'll take the loader from your tractor and a three point with a pto...lower ground pressure, more traction and probably a lot more useful as a utility tractor-snow blower/loader in the soggy, snowy parts of the year!

Its a half track swamp buggy with a VW body I had one and a full track buggy when I lived west of Miami in the late 70s early 80s until our wonderful government decided to throw us off our land to expand everglades national park .

@dirtTdude Thanks bro. I hope to repaint her soon and keep it inside as she works so well for me. I should have got some footage of the VW this past winter in the deep water/mud cutting wood but never took the cammera with me.
@ShawnCFarm14 жыл бұрын
@backwoodsminuteman It uses a hydrulic ram and an old power steering pump with a set of controls to steer with the front wheels only. If a person had time you could add two master cylinders to it and steer with the tracks as well.

@NesteHukka2 I thougnt about using chain, some of the bigger logging skiddes have tracks make out of chain, kind of like a really big tire chain that two tires can ride in.

@DannysCam Chain blocks and or another tractor. And if it has a loader you have to chain it so thats its up with another loader tractor. Its kind of a pain in the ass but it can be done. If they don't run you can get them really cheap, but you have to know what you are looking at.

@lionogre Tires do work inside the tracks, but you have to have tire chains on them. I would biuld a gear drive if it was mine instead of having a tire in it. To translate this use Bing

@landon460 Hahahaha no problems with it. I think I said theres always one problem after the other, what I ment was it always happens to me or around the farm lol. I have a Nissan Pathfinder that I want to make into a hafe track and will keep the same drivetrain for as long as it can run, but if she gose then I might replace with a smallblock as there are lots around cheap
Shawn, I know this is an old video and that this "half track" wasn't yours. But what was the deal with the front axle? There is no diff cover on there. Is it a drive axle, or is it just used as an axle?
@ShawnCFarm9 жыл бұрын
It used to work, drive the front axle as well but he broke it and never fixed it again. So the story gose. Not sure why he let it go like that. It used to have glass in it back in the day.

sadly tracks have a lot of components that wear especially when covering distance, ie great for a digger that wont drive far, no good for a tractor. wheels win every time as its more practical in any normal farming application
