I think she's saying that she is hoping to better her situation, and hoped that her boyfriend had the same goal, but instead he didn't get a job and lived off her, so she left him, as her mother had left her father.
@Bekka_Noyb3 жыл бұрын
heard that she was gay, so probably change BF to GF ;)
@blackkatt7773 жыл бұрын
She actually told him to take your fast car and keep on driving. She built a better life for them and it still wasn't good enough for him to participate in. So sad, but she's singing about some real stuff going on out here in the world. Her storytelling and unique singing style is so captivating, you can't help but want to pay attention to every lyric.
@KinKnives3 жыл бұрын
@@Bekka_Noyb it is a fictional story. Tracy was actually raised by her mother and as you pointed out, is gay, proving nothing needs to be changed in the song because it's not based on her real life story. PS: your comment is pretty homophobic, wether you intended it to be or not.
@Bekka_Noyb3 жыл бұрын
@@KinKnives Excuse me? 1st off I'm bi. 2nd - I didn't say that anything needed to be changed in the song. 3rd - How is saying that the youtuber might want to consider changing BF (as in Boyfriend) to GF (as in Girlfriend) homophobic?
@KinKnives3 жыл бұрын
your response is the equivalent to saying, "I have a black friend" PS: gay or bi people can be homophobic too, actually they are usually the most homophobic people until they come out.

I understand not fully getting the story in such an intellectual song. This is a very intellectual song It seems to me to be more about the cycle of poverty. In the beginning, she quits school to take care of her dad. But it really should be the other way around. The dad should be making sacrifices for the daughter. But she has dreams for better. Eventually, She decides to "escape" with her boyfriend, but he doesn't get a job. She pays all the bills. But she has dreams of making things better. Then, they have kids. He still doesn't have a job, & now he is never around. So, she tells him to leave.

Totally identified with this song in high school. My dad was an ultra-strict, ultra-conservative, abusive parent who practically kept me under lock and key. Friday night was my ONLY escape. My buddy would drive us after school in his beat up '81 Honda Civic to my now ex-girlfriend's place. He was my "fast car." The time of my life, man. His mom's favourite artist was Tracy Chapman and favourite song was Give Me One Good Reason To Stay Here. She passed away a few months after I met the guy of multiple issues including MS. I was at the funeral. It was one of the most difficult experiences of my life, seeing a guy who was such a sarcastic, smart-ass with a British sense of humour like me break down completely while delivering a eulogy to her. He was 16 at the time. I still miss those days.

She is a very powerful singer/songwriter and IMO one of the most underrated of my generation. Every single song on that debut album is great. A few of the standouts are 'Talkin' bout a Revolution', 'Mountains o' Things', and "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight'. Her album 'New Beginning' is stacked with songs as well. 'Cold Feet', 'At This Point In My Life', 'Heaven's Here On Earth', and 'Smoke and Ashes' are some of my favorites.

Subbed and been following for weeks now. Love your vibe .. 3 suggestions 1.)Phil Collins- Easy Lover....early 80's pop/rock duet with Phillip Bailey. 2.) Led Zeppelin- 1972's Since I've Been Loving You...arguebly one of their greatest blues tracks....top 10 list in their catalog. 3.) Steely Dan- R&B meets pop fusion..song called .'Black Cow'... you'll recognize the intro as it was sampled by a hip-hop artist..II don't know the name but .Uptown Baby ...is in the lyrics. Rock-on! PS.. you need to look into Journeys music...tons of hits like Boston. 😎 Keep rollin with the great reactions... ✌🎵🎶🎵

Even with the context of this song? I figured her saying "working at the market as a checkout GIRL" or " you see your friends at the bar more than your own kids" would have been a tip off.
