When my mom passed, one of the workers saw that I was very sad. I shared with him what had happened and he was very sympathetic and compassionate towards me. Everyone said no. I walked into a Trader Joe’s and they were so wonderful lol. Will to be full fair, it is a well-known scam that people will ask you that and then run off with your phone, so it doesn't necessarily mean all those people are bad people. Right after college, I began working at Trader Joe’s. They did expect us to be very friendly, but from a place of authenticity. It was pretty easy to do so based on the way Trader Joe’s functioned. Employees were empowered to test any foods they were curious about and encouraged customers to do the same (seriously- if there is a product you’re curious about and want to try, bring it to the sample station and you will likely be able to taste it). We were allowed to gift flowers, as long as we got permission from a leader. Our “stations“ changed every hour or two so that we didn’t get burnt out of any one position. Trader Joe’s also paid us a living wage. Quite frankly, because we were treated well, and were actively enabled to treat customers well, most of our friendliness was real . We were able to see customers as human and treated them accordingly. I still love that job to this day, even after getting the money-making “big girl” job.

I asked to try something and the employee chastised me loudly 😅 for being wasteful. He told me now he opened it for me to sample it, it had to be thrown away. I've never asked for a sample again. In that part of Jersey they're a Jimmy Buffet wanna be gang that are only authentically nice to their own and customers that match their cool test.

You are spot on!!😅 I'm not an introvert… But I don't like people commenting on everything I buy. I can't wait till someone starts talking about my toilet paper choices.

The Catch-22 of customer service...if you're chatty, people will be mad. If you're not chatty, you're "unfriendly", and people will be mad. If you don't smile in just the right way, if your body language sets them off for whatever reason, if your "thank you" isn't groveling enough...they'll be mad. You just gotta take your best stab at it & hope for the best.

Introvert here. Went in once on a busy afternoon, really anxious about being in there when it was so busy; one of the store associates walked past me and complimented my curly hair. I blushed and thanked her, telling her it hadn't been cooperating lately & I was struggling with my recent haircut. We had a whole conversation (at least 10 minutes lol) and she was so sweet. Then when I was in line, she ran up to me just as we finished up and gave me a bouquet of flowers! (for free lol) All the TJ's associates are so nice!!

As much as I like to stay to myself, I like the fact that the cashier is actually courteous, attentive, and talking about Trader Joe's products and not about some idle gossip. Great Customer Service is worth the chit chat(at least for me, it is).

I was a cashier for 8 years and it can be very exhausting being talkative with ALL customers.. but it's so worth it when I see that I made someones day simply by treating them in a way that makes them feel seen like this :)

Staring out the windows and daydreaming is exactly why we hire people to drive for us. But the Uber driver says, "Nah, we gonna have ourselves a pointless, meaningless conversation because that's my job. "

How is being annoyingly chatty an example of customer service? As a retail worker, I can say you need to learn to read people and interact accordingly. If I have a quiet customer, I respect that and keep my end quiet as well, speaking only when needed. If a customer is cordial, I'll be the same. I don't engage in constant chit chat, as the point is to ring the customer up so they can go on with their day. That being said, I'm an introvert and having a cashier be so annoying like this would make me stop shopping there.
@p_roduct92118 ай бұрын
@@lissajedilove what you just put into words what I never could but felt! People feel like being a "people person" is critical to making an impact on the job. Hell no, be polite and courteous but annoyingly chatty folks drive me up the wall. I'm in a meeting, let's spend 3-5 minutes with the casual chatter but no more than that. I don't need to know the details of a coworker planning her brother's 50th birthday, like just ugh. A competent person is efficient and gracious, and that means also respecting my time and privacy. Unless I'm on familiar terms with you, please don't overshare. I feel like the Scandis/Germans get this but fake friendly Americans/Canadians don't.

I'm sorry. Not being sarcastic or anything I genuinely am sorry you're missing that feeling from people in your every day life, we should all have people that talk to us like this. If you don't have a friend like this maybe you could become this friend if you just push yourself a little and commit to it. I'm gonna try to become this friend, cuz your comment made me sad for all the people who don't have someone like this. I don't have anyone like this either but your comment made me want to be this kind of friends for the people in my life in case they have similar unfulfilled feelings, since this is how I feel on the inside I just wish I were confident enough to talk to people in the way that I feel inside, positive and upbeat

As a cashier at a grocery store who mostly works in self-checkout, you just put me on blast 🙈🙈🙈😅 But in my/our defense, I/We are just trying to be friendly and kind in an increasingly self-centered and difficult word 🥺🫶 But you're right, I should try to keep it to a minimum more often for my self-checkout customers. I usually try to pay attention to body language and social cues, but there have been times when I've realized I was being too much and had to pull myself back.
