Alan is my most favoured speaker on the nature of existence. I find others who dismiss him as not being sufficiently patient to see through the veil of phenomena and emotions. The idea of Zen, is as Thomas Berry was wont to state: "Nothing is itself without everything else." Alan very simply explains in his own way, that our humanity is entangled and intertwined with our essential underlying nature of being; that they are as inseparable as a crest is from a trough, to create a wave.

Unfortunatelly this is a very intellectual way of dealing with existance. It excludes feelings, emotions, real and living interaction with the world around us. The world around us might be an illusion - fair enough, but what we feel in relation to this illusion is real. It's not about what we see or can touch - its what we feel. People we love will die one day, but the love we feel is real. His philosophy is an intellectual distruction from what's real. Paradoxically, he is drawning in thoughts.

my wife of 45years got a death sentence. They even gave her a date, like an execution date. It’s called a prognosis. My family, being two adult children, snatched her away and got the landlord to send an eviction notice. My daughter, now 45, is a nurse in a major hospital. What did i do? Nothing. I did nothing to deserve this. Now I live in the back of my car at a dog beach in australia. At my age, with a heart condition. It’s tantamount to murder. The government takes it’s sweet time to process the marital assets with no duty of care. That’s reality. It’s cruel and random.

That doesn’t reveal itself until you dig really deep and fall to your knees asking to be shown what it’s all about. Bless you. it feels cruel and random and always will-until so much suffering one day gives way to the reality of our cosmic consciousness. suffering is the ultimate catalyst for spiritual awakening. it teaches you to truly give up, it erodes the ego until all that's left is the perfect awareness that is you and always has been you. it seems to be random, though, and i understand the grief of this realization probably better than most people i know. reading spiritual texts, praying, fasting, etc. can aid in the realization of cosmic consciousness, but it's not guaranteed any results, even if somebody feels as though they've done everything correctly. likewise, i believe it doesn't always come to people who've suffered immensely, because the person suffering expects it in return for all the grief they've endured. i think the key is to not expect an end to suffering, but to embrace the roughness of it. the only way out is through. something that helps along the way, though, is to deliberately and selflessly put goodness out into the world, even if it feels like you don't have any inside of you. even if you're not accustomed to it. a simple, genuine smile offered to a lonely stranger is a good start and enough to change a lifetime. doing little things like this here and there will make it possible for good things to happen to you in return.

This play of energy can and does manifest any number of horrific scenarios- medieval torture for instance. If it goes on eternally we will suffer such occurrences an infinite number of times. Alan Watts is essentially saying we shouldn't be fundamentally afraid, because any such hellish state is temporary and we will not be subject to it forever; such is the transient nature of this universe. But if you incarnate into an AI hell realm that lasts for eons of time (and such a scenario is possible within the infinite multiplicity of realities and experience) then one could dare to say that this is rather terrifying- even on a fundamental level. Alan Watts was an optimistic man. I am not entirely certain however, that we should not be fundamentally afraid.

A human being's journey is from his circumference as a movable observer to his centre as an immovable witnessor. The moment he completes this journey he is no more in bondage of this mayik jagat or illusionary world. God is NOT. The real God is a Oneness, the Absolute. Everything. It does not judge, it allows. It is given to You, this tiny fractal of Onesness, to choice how you flow, where you flow, or indeed if you do not.
