I have 4 kilts from Scotweb, and every one of them is a work of art that will last a life time. I couldn't be happier, and if you get kilt made by them (5 yard or 8 yard), you can't go wrong!

I say wear a kilt. There are many regional or universal tartans to wear (although really, wearing any tartan isn't illegal but may be judged as inappropriate by some members of a clan. There are also non-tartan modern kilts by Utilikilt and Alt.Kilt (with some interesting steam punk styles) and other makers who even offer hemp kilts. Really, in older times, tartans were basically regionally what a weaver would make using plant dyes of the region - later these became fixed and attached to clans

@TartanKiltsByScotweb Thanks for your response. That would explain why they are sometimes quite expensive. Any particular reason the pleates have to be so wide and take up so much material ? Thanks in advance.

i wear a kilt a lot and i saw most of the men turning in the kilts so when i did it it showed a lot so how can i turn more swiftly

hehe, i joined the SCA and i have a scottish persona. I need to get a great kilt though, so i can throw the excess material over my shoulder

Showing their ass? where was that? I saw some turns showing off the pleats. The pleats in the back are where most of the fabric is layered and is one of the signs of a kilt's length of fabric. An 8-yard kilt has a lot of weight in the back and is quite different than an 8-yard kilt. Pleating originated in the belted plaid or 'great kilt where the whole thing was laid out on the ground and hand pleated each time- pleats allowed for mobility (without pleats, a cloth wrap would restrict movement)

hector russell kilts are crap. some guy named lowe made mine, left off the third buckle, and sewed the hem with big thread leaving holes in the hem. never again
