Such a nice video! So great that you introduced classic traditional tavernas and not the standard touristic places that everyone is copying pasting in every video for Athens. So you end up just seeing a touristic guide outdated. Well done guys! Just subscribed!!!

This tradition of serving free dessert in taverns in Greece,It started from Crete and specifically from Heraklion about twenty-five years ago and spread slowly throughout the country. In Crete the dessert is always accompanied by free raki.Very good video, very good the presentation and the food looks divine!!

The free dessert you just had, the orange cake with all those layers, that is actually made with Phyllo dough :) ! I just found a recipe the other day for this and it's called portokalopita if anyone should want to try to make this at home. I just found your alls channel and am delighted to see your journey!

Thank for watching!!! Funnily enough we did try to recreate it at home when we returned home and the results were, shall we say...a mile away from how good the version we had in Athens was 😅 Definitely made us appreciate the dish we had even more!!

P.S. It's klimataria with the accent at the ending syllable-a! Klimatari-A. It means the Klima ( a grapevine) climbs up on a pergola or canopy and it's hanging with grapes.

So if you adored these rare dishes I suggest if you visit again Greece to head to city of Volos in Central Greece. Volos is a port and has also good seafood maybe even better than both Athens and Pireas. They have special tavernas named tsipouradika. That is because the main role is to serve tsipouro ( I warn you it’s even stronger than ouzo) along with small dishes of extremely tasty meze. We name them meze because they are delightful dishes. If you adored skordalia more then I strongly suggest to visit my mothers birth place. The island of Cephalonia in which is one of the most diverse islands in Greece and skordalia is a special plate there. It’s not just mashed potatoes with garlic lemon and lots of olive oil. It takes time to make it like melted caramel and they used in it not cod soup but a broth from a smoked fish brought by Italy named Kofisi (don’t know it’s Greek name or it’s scientific one). I guarantee that Cephalonia will leave you astound with its beaches it’s cave-lake Melissani and it’s huge cave of Drogarati.

Thanks for watching!!! We went during mid-February so it was still wintertime. The weather was quite nice and mild as far as winters go. Apart from the normal crowds at the Acropolis (which wasn't as crowded as we thought) and Monastiraki Square, it wasn't very crowded at all where we went especially in the other ruins that we visited.

Wow you actually ate stuffed cabbage meatballs and skordalia with your fried cod. It’s so out of the menu the usual tourist is tasting in Greece!!!! You deserve a medal !!!! The sauce with your Cod is called skordalia made with mashed potatoes lots of olive oil and usually lots of garlic. If I had to guess you ate them on 25th of March on the Greek Indepence Day. You either love it (as I do) or you will hate it to death. But garlic is so good for health. Anyway you ate some of the most unusual Greek foods there are and since you loved them then you will love much more some other ones which are much more tasty. One remark that the octopus should be served to you with yellow lentils (fava) and some caper. You would be blown out of this world.

Haha we tried to research all the great Greek food before coming here and we're so glad it paid off!! We had skordalia again when we came back from our trip and it is soooo addicting!!! Really can't wait to go back and try more Greek food!!

@@locavore_eats I forgot to mention that the cabbage sauce is called eggdrop soup with lemon. It’s made either with meat and rice balls wrapped in cabbage (few people eat it because they hate cabbage and the boiled one smells awful but it can be avoided to smell) or with plain meat-rice balls or finally my favourite with chicken legs. But usually this soup when produced is hit so hard that it’s amazingly foamy. And very tasty also. It’s a must in cold winter days. Only fish soup is more healthy than this soup.

There's so much great food that we ate in Athens that it's so hard to choose! But definitely gyros/souvlaki/pitas were some of the best foods that we had here, loukoumades were great desserts and fava (yellow split pea dip) was incredible. Tbh everything from a traditional Greek taverna were so delicious that you can't go wrong!!

The Greek government has to honor you by offering you the Greek citizenship for loving so much the Greek history, culture and food. Your Greek accent is awesome, better than the American kids' when I was teaching them Greek language, culture, Mythology and Philosophy in America. I quit that job and have been driving a semi truck and 53ft trailer now...and I love it. My stepson used to call the veggies as meatballs... "veggiteckie" haha like the equivalent beefsteak (beefteckie in Greek) lol. Your videos are great, entertaining and yummy, you even showed the Greek national parade, so I'm assuming you were there on March 25, right? (Our National Holiday for defeating the Turkish / Ottoman empire (since 1453, when they occupied Constantinople/ Istanbul in Turkish, the Greek Asia Minor and parts of the mainland and islands). What I love is that you travel with your family, your zest and enthusiasm about everything. To tell you the truth I get so much joy from your videos that I watch them several times! You like the Greek coffee (common in Turkey, Lebanon and Tynisia) so why not buy a big bag and try to make it in New Zealand? Just don't let it boil, but remove it from the heat when it has this "kaimaki" (thick layer with some bubbles on top)
