My boyfriend forced me to go to a public bathouse in Kyoto. It was a old bathhouse frequented mostly by elderly people. They have one for men and one for women. No one stared and everyone was busy bathing and chilling in the tubs. It was a great experience. I'm glad i gave in and tried. The only culture shock was seeing the elderly man running the place suddenly walk into the women's changing room where they have the lockers. None of the women inside( most were elderly local women) batted an eye. He came in and got something from one of the lockers and left. Lol.

I live in central, rural Japan, and it’s true - a lot of the bath houses have gotten some interesting amenities over the last 10 years or so. But nothing so cool as a DJ and craft beer on site…that sounds like a Tokyo thing. (I’m a bit jealous.) That said, we do have one local place that includes a ‘beer bath’ - you actually bathe in a mix of beer and hot spring water. (Seriously, if you don’t believe me I’ll be happy to post a link. 😂 🍻

People today are just getting more and more shy and reserved about this kind of thing. In America, more and more gyms are getting separate stall showers, and I even had a man yell at me one time for changing in the locker room. I don’t understand why he got mad at me for using the room for what it was designed for, but I believe America has lost a lot of its original, trademark rugged toughness. It’s a shame. I don’t have a problem with separate showering, especially with all the current health concerns, but I feel that this indicates that people are too squeamish and unaccepting of others, and they just can’t stomach even a small amount of discomfort.

Apparently it is and not only in my dream. I got in the bath, and I didn’t know exactly what I was doing, just got inside and it automatically filled up with water,. I’ve never been there never seen such a thing! They were actually attached to one another like this but they were individual bath tubs long though like 15’ long… there were about 20 of them all in a row. I didn’t know what to do once I was in the bath. However, there was also other areas sitting areas, restaurant, massage, parlors, all sorts of stuff in there . When it came time to pay, It was just under $70 in American currency for one hour. I’m not sure what that would be in their currency. Thanks for sharing this. I’m not sure why I have this dream. I am in the United States. I’ll never go to China, although I wish I could.

What’s the different between an onsen and a sento?
@d.n.891927 күн бұрын
I could be wrong, but I think “Onsens” are more like the big hot spring resorts, while sentos are more like neighborhood bathing facilities that were typically used prior to when people had showers and bathtubs in their own houses. Onsens also usually use water sourced from natural hot springs, while sentos heat regular tap water.

Mixed bathing was fairly common in Japan until the rise of shogunate when it was nearly regulated out of existence because it "threatened morals" Some remote onsen do still offer it. It's considered kinda 'risque' but it's one of the few places where your allowed to wear a towel into the bath if you are a woman. The "Moral Hazard" argument was also used to drive women out of owning sake breweries and becoming actors. In fact the first performer of what would later become Noh theatre was a woman. "Oh women are involved, might be a cover for prostitution, better ban / regulate it"

They were originally created since centuries ago people didn't have private bathrooms or showers. But for today it's for relaxation: soaking in hot water, often with extra perks like water jets, etc. Koreans have them too (there are even Korean spas that resemble this in major US metro areas). Basically no one really goes to these places to clean themselves anymore. They're more like spas now.

You’re American, you have no culture. Everything that’s yours is stolen from others right down to the land you’re on. I’d be embarrassed if I was American.
