CHIEF ARVOL LOOKING HORSE
Arvol Looking Horse was born on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota. At the age of 12, he was given the responsibility of becoming the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe, the youngest ever. He is widely recognized as a chief and the spiritual leader of all three branches of the Sioux tribe.
He is the author of White Buffalo Teachings and a guest columnist for Indian Country Today. A tireless advocate of maintaining traditional spiritual practices, Chief Looking Horse is the spiritual leader of the Big Foot Riders which memorializes the massacre of Big Foot's band at Wounded Knee.
Chief Looking Horse's prayers have opened numerous sessions of the United Nations and his many awards include the Juliet Hollister Award from the Temple of Understanding, a Non-Governmental Organization with Consultation Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. He lives on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota. He is the father of 3 children, Farin, Makas’a & Cody as well as many youth he has adopted.
Film interviews with Arol Looking Horse on spirituality, tribal history, and advice for American Indian youth are a featured part of the documentary film and DVD on the Crow Shoshone Sun Dance entitled Native Spirit: The Sun Dance Way. An illustrated book, Native Spirit: The Sun Dance Way, by Thomas Yellowtail (recorded and edited by Michael Fitzgerald), also features his counsel.
World Wisdom has prepared special video clips of Arvol Looking Horse speaking on a variety of different subjects. They can be viewed in our American Indian Resources section.
PAULA LOOKING HORSE
Paula Looking Horse in an accomplished traditional Dakota singer and artist. Her musical credits include opening for the Indigo Girls, touring Europe with Keith Secola and other notable native artists, and composing and producing her own cd, Songs of a Black Hills Woman. She has been involved in Native rights for over 40 years, organizing Wopida (Great Thank You) Ceremony in 1984 for the Sacred Pipestone Quarries in Minnesota. The following 7 years she helped organize the Sacred Pipestone Run through all SD Reservations to bring attention to the mass exploitation of the selling of the sacred stone aka “the blood of the people”.
She is one of the four graduates of Red Schoolhouse (RSH) in Minnesota and a subsequent board member. RSH was the first alternative school to teach Traditional Native education curriculum - bringing forth historical truth vs. inaccurate history books in Public Schools. She brought her organizational skills to World Peace and Prayer/ Honor Sacred Sites Day in 1996 and has been a moving force in creating the events ever since. She is also the mother of eight children and many more adopted throughout her life.

I am watching this recording 3 years after it was originally presented. Such a blessing to have both their voices and insights available! Paula's sharing resonated very much with me and her comments on the environment and animals having a rest from humanity's global activities really struck me. I remember seeing the contrasting images of the air before and after the quarantines from all around the world and how miraculous it was! It seems the revealing of a healthier environment would have had some impact to our collective consciousness and to strive to maintain such a condition globally, but the neurosis returned and is thoughtlessly in habitual motion again. If aware of itself, the consensus will lose its comforts, yet the deep knowing of the harm of the conditions it is creating causes selfish & ignorant behaviors. I am of the generations born into this delusional world, and awakening within it causes disorientation that needs guidance towards the true path and courage to step into the unknown. Courage to relinquish comforts for the sake of the earth and fellow beings. Paula's grandmothers outlook on the harnessing of electricity held deep truths since we can see the accelerated results of this action and the ravaging of resources it triggered. The solutions of things such as electric cars are still coming from the same mind set as their predecessors. Resources are taken for granted and waters are deeply abused for such manifestations of the artificial world. This reminder of how the earth can be healed once the chaos is quieted is paramount. Thank you Arvol and Paula Looking Horse for offering your voices in order for others to have the opportunity to expand their understandings of the things that can heal our conditions, mindsets, and attitudes of appreciation not coveting. Unifying in this common cause of kinship for the sake of all of creation from all corners of this world seems still a challenge, yet it can be met when such direction and openness are given as through Arvol's dream of the tree of life thriving through our healthy, intentional, unified participation . Peace be with us all for the sake of all.

And what lady Paula said makes me TRUELY want to come live on outskirts of your reservation I'll bundle up & somehow get to your home before the sun rises to get your eggs, I'll help you not feed your whole garden to them 😂 if you can just help teach me your ways. Your spirits have touched my heart & I will thank God (Great Spirit) every day for you!

I have been having so many thoughts through watching this. The thing that stands out to me most is that “babies were born in tipis, now they are born in hospitals.” I can only imagine that giving birth/being born in a tipi, and close to Mother Earth would be the ultimate experience. I had my baby at home with a midwife, and that was such a beautiful way to welcome them into the world. We (me and the baby) did it with no drugs or anything, and I could sleep with my baby in our home, in our own bed. It was also so comforting for me to have my fur kids around (who checked on us the whole time), because only humans are allowed in a hospital. I felt safe at home, and know that hospital delivery would have been so damaging. I was able to run the shower for the last bit before the actual delivery (I can only imagine being by a stream or waterfall). My home is my safe space, and the shower is always one of my healing places. The other thing of note is that, especially when preparing meat for my cats (I’m a vegetarian), I always say thank you to the food. It seems strange not to. When the food is from an animal, I always give the meat a massage, and I tell the essence of the animal out loud, “thank you so much for your life, and that in death, your flesh will nourish and strengthen my kitties.” I always try to find the best cared for and organic food because I know it has more nutrition (and flavor!), and I truly believe that you will consume the trauma of whatever you eat. Everything seems to be consumed by trauma now though. There are many other things I’d want to say, but it doesn’t really matter too much. All I know is that based on my own beliefs and experiences, I feel profoundly connected to Mother Earth/the moon/stars/wind/space/the rain/and all things in a spiritual way. It’s strange because it’s like I remember things in different lifetimes, past and present (even remember things before they happen in my current life). I absolutely agree that things are getting really bad. We have hurt our Mother, and many have become a cancer to her. She hurts because her children hurt her, and they hurt each other. 😿

Spirituality, language, culture, and traditions make the Sioux strong, without it they become weak. Focus at present and pray the old traditional way. In the past, the umbilical cord reaches to Wounded Knee. Sorry for your loss I pray the Creator gives both you and your husband strength, wisdom, comfort, and peace.

Dear Sister, may your Youngins find goodness in you! We certainly do Pray for Our Children and Grandchildren to see what is happening! What we can do is pass along the serious issues that they can't see and meet them where they are and encourage them to embrace their own gifts and try to make better choices than what we have ! The hard part for us is to follow this Message to balance ourselves and heal together in our hearts 🙏! Blessings to You and Yours !

wow. just wow. unfortunately I am out of alignment and suffer from mental illness. I hope that these teachings can sink into my being and that of other people who are suffering so that we can heal and thereby heal the earth.

@@St.Buddha_Brahman-Sun_of_Light yes, it is. Many people are quite isolated and not used to working as a community. I know that's the case for me. But yes, would be great if people would start coming together and working together.
