Pongal is one of the major festival of South India. Mainly celebrated in Tamil Nadu. In other parts of India, It is popularly known as Makar Sankranti. Pongal is a four day Hindu Harvest Festival. Its is also a major festival in Sri Lanka. It is observed by the Tamil diaspora world wide, Including those in Malaysia, Singapore, United States, United Kingdom, Canada and the Gulf Countries.
Day1: Bhogi Pongal
Bhogi is the first day of Pongal. It is also known as Makar Sankranti. People offer their prayers to God Indra for blessings the land with rain yielding for a good harvest. on this day houses are cleaned thoroughly. Then people discard old and derelict things and concentrate on new things causing change or transformation.
Day2: Thai Pongal(Surya Pongal)
The second day which is considered the most important day of the Pongal festival know as Thai Pongal. This day is dedicated to God sun. It sign of Thanking him for the harvest. According to tradition, The festival marks the end of Winter Solstice, and the start of the Sun’s Six Month Long journey northwards, when the sun enters the Capricorn. also called as Uttarayana.
Pongal prasad prepared from the new harvest of rice boiled in milk with Jaggery. Pongal prasad first offered to the Gods and goddesses, including God Sun.
Day3: Mattu Pongal
This day is dedicated to Cattle. such as Cows, Bulls, and other farm animals who play a significant role in the contribution of agriculture. The Cattle are bathed, their horns polished and painted in bright colors and dressed up before they are prayed.
Day4: Kaanum Pongal
Kaanum Pongal is a day dedicated to relaxation and enjoyment. on this day relatives and friends meet each other and exchange sweet and goodies. Mainly Traditional games are held on this day like, Jallikattu, Horse cart race.
