I spend some time setting up profiles when installing beads etc. that way you plumb, square and level. Makes the rendering light work both scratch and top coat

Hi Alex, How do I control to gel half thickness for the scratch layer In order to left the another half for top coat. Another question is it's possible to use the plastic corners or flat to separate areas to work in small areas the reason probably is I don't have much time to finish a big wall myself in one day. Looking for the way to do it in different days

Can you feel the difference between a good and bad batch of sand? I know that too much silt or mud will leave marks on your hand and too many large stones can be spotted, but does it feel different with too much fines?
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
100%. Fine sand is the worst of all. It’s an absolute nightmare. 🙁 it doesn’t rule, or float up and the water rises to the top of the mix. It’s so frustrating.
@IanDavies

What would you do if you thought it was too fine? Would you start mixing sands with something a little bit more corse?
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
@@IanDavies tbh, its obvious if it is too fine. The render is almost unusable. To get us through the day we used lime in the mix which helps. But it isn’t great. Both times it happened we swapped the sand out. It’s a pain, but the cost isn’t that bad tbh. I ton of sand is about £60

I have a question please... I used a scud coat at 2 to 1 and waterproof/ plastersizer And scratch coat 3 to 1 and waterproof and plasterzizer And now the suction on the scratch coat is drying too fast... Am going to put another layer of scratch over it as we are using Webber white to finish..... Just wondering could we put waterproof and pollybond in the next scratch coat .The mix will be 4to 1...... Need help please

Hi Alex, what mix do you use for a scratch coat?
@none7195
@none7195 2 жыл бұрын
I always thought you needed to wet the brick first to help with suction. Is this the case or qad that done off camera or is it not necessary. Thanks
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
Not necessary if you have put a stabiliser on like SBR, slurry coat or render grip. .

Hi Alex 👍, thanks for your postings always interesting to see how other people do things. Personally still like two coats of pva 5/1 to seal ; then just before putting the scratch coat on, pva 3/1 making sure the 2nd coat pva is tacky as the scratch coat goes on. Welds the plaster to the wall👍 What water proofing additives do you use in your external renders.

Hello, Alex. Is there a way to successfully deal with cold joints in render? I realize that they should be avoided but sometimes that might not be an option. Thank you.
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Depends where it is. Most use an expansion joint. But that needs to be planned into the job. Or a horizontal bell cast (I don’t personally like this approach. Not my style.) - have a look at a company called bruford_and_ bond_plastering on Instagram for this style of rendering.

The trowel is coming in ok. I have been using it to lay on a lot while plastering. We are working on a high end house so the finish has to be 👌 so I can’t use it too much in the later stages at the moment. But it’s getting there. Should be a great trowel for someone.

Tbh I usually just eyeball it tbh. However this is a calculation you can do which is online that will tell you the exact about you need. But that would require quoting jobs with a a tape measure which I only do for m² rate skimming.

@@AlexMorleyPlastering you float up left to right. Doesn't make sense to lay on right to left. I was taught that in college when I first learnt how to lay on render. The render on the right hand side has been hit to quick with the sun.it needs splashing when it goes grey that fast. Keep it green and wet longer so cement sets harder curing it. Looked the same when you were scratching it. Needs to be a bit deeper than a few mm so the two coat can grip into the coat not just on it. Really enjoy your videos your internal work is excellent , I've learnt a few things from them.

No. It took about 3-4 hours to do the whole side of the house. Both Luke and Louie are improvers in rendering so I have to go over the whole house after they have put it on. So a side of a house is enough for me. 😎
