Traditionalists Want This Fly BANNED!

Advocates for traditional fly-fishing want to ban the blob fly pattern, considering it unsporting. Unlike traditional flies crafted to imitate natural forage, the blob, with its flashy appearance, was designed to trigger trout and is seen by many as an unfair advantage in competitive angling, making trout fishing too easy. Former England fly-fishing champion Chris Ogborne even left the national team in protest against the use of blobs, labeling them as cheating. He argues that the reliance on blobs undermines the core essence of fly-fishing, which traditionally involves imitating a trout's prey with hand-tied flies made from natural materials.

One of the first flies that I 'tied' was taking crystal sparkle pipe cleaners and wrap it on a size 16 hook. Nothing else, except some super glue to keep it from rotating. That fly caught so many bluegills, some as big as 6", from my local pond. That's when I realized that it doesn't take much other than sparkle to attract fish.

It is, I can attest to that! I like white with a bit of pink as the dubbing this time of year on the Salmon River. That and a heavy tungsten bead to help it get down there. Try Fire Hole the have great hot spot colors for this

Awesome fly pattern! Thank you for sharing! I have access to stocked and wild trout who will refuse anything sometimes. In 15 some years, this “controversial” pattern might be considered a traditional fly too. 😂 Tight lines! 🎣

Im not picky, id rather catch fish on what they will bite on then missing fish because i wouldnt use a specific fly.

Serious question... who bans the flys? Like competition ban or government? Im first nations so basically nothing is banned.

both most are for competitions, that's were this one stems from. However, there are others that can't be used on specific rivers to help reduce the catch rates, or just prevent the fish from being hooked to deep in some cases

Fly fishing: This fly is banned, that fly is banned, the fly you haven't created yet? You guessed it. Banned. Bass fishing: How many flashers, noisemakers, and attractors do you want? All of them? Joking aside, I can think of maybe 5 bass lures that are banned and it depends on the state. I know those are fly fishing traditionalists so it's a little different but reading your description about how upset this made some traditionalists is pretty funny.

oh really? Even in the bass world, what are some of these maybe I'll make a fly version that will some day be banned. Probably my ultimate goal in fly tying right now, to make a fly thats too good to even use. Sounds like quite the accomplishment!

@@MainelyFlies Umbrella rigs are one thing that's banned in most competitions. They mimic schools of fish and are supposedly really effective. How much more effective than something like say a spinnerbait or a crankbait? Who knows. Another one are things like blinkers which use an LED flashing light to grab a bass's attention. They aren't banned in most states but there are a few competitions that ban it by name. It's really only useful at night from what I understand. It's a different world than fly fishing. I know at one time during the colonial era there was a fly fishing technique that was popular by using several flies along the line to increase bite chance. Kind of like double jigging but with 5 or 6 flies instead of just two. Not really the same idea as an umbrella rig though. It doesn't mimic a school of fish and is just there to increase bite chance. Probably not an ideal set up bbbuuutt I'm sure it'd be banned.

They should ban forward facing sonar and side scans. Watching bass fishing tournaments today is like watching a video game.
