Thank you for the balanced & objective content of the video. Manna Dey's under-appreciation in our subcontinent is proof that most of us enjoy a male singer's tonal quality more than his singing prowess. This does not mean that the other greats (Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar etc) were not fine singers, but Manna Dey was in a different league. To typecast him as a 'classical singer' is like feeling only the tail of an elephant and inferring that the animal is just another type of snake. He is the most genre-versatile male singer of our subcontinent. No genre of music was beyond his capability.

Since my childhood I was deeply attracted to his voice basically for the emotions he carried in the lyrics. Manna Dey sahab is the real Tansen of Film Music..Why only Films, let's say music The Voice, the "Lagan" and "Mehnat" with which he cultivated himself through his voice culture by intense practice, dedication and sacrifice is unmatched in the film industry He was a man for all seasons...Nobody can match him. He used to set bench marks that it was almost impossible to reach there. No wonder the singers of today who try to imitate only Rafi sahab, Kishore sahab and Mukesh sahab don't even dare to try to imitate Manna sahab or try his difficult classical based songs which were termed light classical in those days because they lack the guts, the "mehnat", the riyaaz and range. All try to shine at once which unfortunately ends up in a flash in the pan. Jaya ji has done a wonderful job in portraying the genius and calibre of a true singer Manna Dey sahab who sits on the top as the saying goes - "There is always room at the Top" R. I. Manna Da was complete singer, he had classical training from his uncle K. C. Dey and four ustaads 1. Ustaad Dabir Khan 2. Ustaad Aman Ali Khan 3. Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan and 4. Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan had after listening to Manna Da in a program in Jaipur in 1959 had written to him asking him to sing pure classical, Manna Da almost made up his mind to quit singing filmi songs, but Rafi Sahab his close friend who translated the letter dissuaded him to do so. Manna Da sang songs which no other singer could render. Mahender Kapoor and Asha Bhonsle have confessed that they were afraid to sing with him because of his classical training and mastery. Shankar Jaikishan regretted that they did not use Manna Da fully. Manna Da didn’t get his due, he deserved much more, more songs and recognition. Only connoisseurs can appreciate his range and mastery.

Manna Dey the pride of Hindustan was at his sublime best in rendering Bengali numbers. He is deeply respected in Bombay but in Calcutta he along with Hemant Kumar( Hemant Mukhopadhyay) is considered nothing less than Almighty in incarnation. My personal favorite is another great and that is Md Rafi. But I am ready to die at any time for great great Manna Dey. I am seriously against any foolish comparison between Md Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Kishore or Hemant ..as they are all blessed by none other than the Almighty. Just enjoy the musical world enriched by all these legands and the pride of our Hindustan.

मन्ना डे साहब बहुत ज़बरदस्त गायक थे, उनकी आवाज़ क्लासिक गाने के लिए बहुत अच्छी थी, क्लासिक गायकी के बादशाह थे, उनकी आवाज़ मे जवान पन नही था, मन्ना डे जी की आवाज़ मे बुढा पन था! रफी साहब अपनी आवाज़ कही भी मोड सकते थे, मुकेश जी और किशोर कुमार जी ये सब अपने आवाज़ से किसी भी अभिनेता के ऊपर जमा दिया करते थे..

If u want to listen song picturised on young hero then you should have to find bengali movies or bengali modern song which was like a chant for every bengali youths.
