Lucille Ball was one of the greatest comedians of all time, and she was one of the first true TV stars, but despite her success, her life was always a difficult one.
Ball’s father died when she was just three years old, and her childhood afterward was filled with traumatic incidents. While I Love Lucy was inspired by the real-life marriage of Ball and Desi Arnaz, their TV marriage was far happier than their real one, which was destroyed by Arnaz’s constant infidelity and drinking.
Let’s take a look at some tragic things you might not know about Lucille Ball.

I watched I love Lucy reruns almost every day growing up. So funny, they would be dated now a days but growing up in the 70’s they were still pretty relevant. Thanks I didn’t know how tragic her young years were.
@bobpierce115
@bobpierce115 3 жыл бұрын
Good comment Edward. I think it's because the 70's weren't that much different than the 50's, especially looking back at both decades now. All 3 of her series were a product of their time, just as everything always is. The bottom line is that they're still funny shows now, with the vintage charm of those long gone decades only adding to the charm of them, and an further escape from our horrible, horrible present. It's a little like looking at old LIFE magazines from those decades. The older they get, the cooler they are to read!

i, too, grew up on i love lucy reruns, as did many of us, i imagine. i still find the episodes equally amusing in the present day, surprisingly. lucille's comedic prowess defies any constraints of time, IMO. even 20-30 years ago, when i was watching the show religiously, many things seemed outdated (the infamous separate beds for lucy & ricky, etc.), but the humor has never become outdated, for me anyway. lucille was a one inna million kinda lady & i'm thankful she existed. :)

@@josephsmith358 Desi never got enough credit. He produced the show and starred in it. Hardly rehearsed. Just memorized the entire script by reading it once. Eventually Desilu BOUGHT RKO....the movie studio that fired them both. Desi invented the 3 camera set up and FILMING the episodes so that both coasts got a quality picture. And of course no one even THOUGHT about owning the films and making money off reruns. In those days you showed a show once and it was on to the next thing. Desi knew. Lucy was a great performer but Desi did everything behind the scenes. It was his baby.

As a young boy growing up in Cottonwood, AZ back in the mid 70's/80's, I lived a block away from where Lucille's brother Fred and their mother lived. I frequently was a visitor in their home where mama Ball would regale me with stories of Lucille in her younger days and how she would be in the studio during taping. Fred was an insurance salesman and owned /operated a small motel in town. Very laid back soft spoken people. I miss them. All of them.

I never heard about her mother putting a dog leash on her. Couldn't she have been able to undo it herself, unless her mother tied her hands. Another thing that was not mentioned was that Lucy broke her leg when she was young, I think around 13. Even after it healed her leg bothered her to the point where she did not like to wear shoes with very high heels, although it didn't seem to affect her when she danced or did some of the other physical antics on the I Love Lucy shows.

When you told about how she was told to give up acting it immediately reminded me of what a talent scout said about Fred Astaire. He sings, can also dance a little 😂😂😂

Lucy and desi were great people. They invited all their employees to their each ranch in OC and had great parties and give gifts to everyone. I love Lucy is my favorite tv show ever. My sister and I watched I love Lucy before we were even in preschool.

I was in the Navy when she died, stationed on a ship out to sea for six months, and this was in the days before email and the Internet were around, and news was limited. When I got back to the States in August, it sort of blew my mind that Lucille-Effing-Ball had been dead for months and I'd had no idea.

Some of the facts on here are not true. After I love lucy she didn't start "here's lucy" it was " the lucy show" first. Also MAME was not her last movie, STONE PILLOW in the 80s was.... Don't come after ball fans.

Technically Mame was Lucille's last feature film since Stone Pillow was a made-for-TV movie. I was very disappointed that the narrator of this video did not mention the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour and The Lucy Show. The Lucy Show was a very successful series at the time (from 1962 to 1968).
