▶️Trailblazer Power Steering Line Repair🔧. Power steering leaks are a common problem with the Chevy Trailblazer. The years this effects are 2002-2011. They always tend to leak on the high side line right next to the driver side fuse box. Chevy doesn't have any recalls that I know of with this problem. Without a recall, you would be looking at upwards of $1,000 dollars in repairs.
With this DIY Trailblazer Power Steering Line Repair, I've demonstrated in detail how you can save yourself hundreds of dollars in repairs and even have your Trailblazer up and running in a matter of a few hrs.

mine just did this 03 TB. Line was rusted where you show but also too close to the bend so I had to cut the line near the frame. Fought like hell with clearences but also went with copper tubing so I could bend it. I tried with steel lines and they would be difficult to bend and also would kink. I think I might have it fixed. The other line doesn't look too good. You sure did save me from having to replace the complete line!!

I did this yesterday and did not go as planned. Main issue was not able to fit mini pipe cutter in the front beginning start of pipe. The back I got to cut off and btw took a long time spinning around but eventually cut through. When I pulled up on the line from when did first cut it broke off in middle beginning area where was rusted so was not able to get mini pipe cutter under front are just to tight of s fit and or didn’t want to cut where the pipe curved up. So what I ended up doing is where pipe broke used 3/8 rubber nylon fuel line over the steering line held with screw down clamps. It is working fine so far no leaks. Only been a day .. fingers crossed. Also for those after doing it wheel stiff just give it a bi of time to release free or hold to right for a few seconds. Line took like 6 minutes for pump to kick in to have wheel release free. Just saying what I did because I bough all these parts and sadly things didn’t go the way I hoped. Good luck all!!! 🍻

@castajc82

While that is a good fix. It is temporary. You still have rust build up on portions of the line. I have done one of these recently and its really not that bad of a repair to replace both lines. the hardest part is fishing the two new lines in but with some patience only takes about 20 minutes to get the new lines in. I also do this for a living so it is easier for me with the right tools on hand. You really do need a lift to perform the complete line replacement with less headache though.
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 6 жыл бұрын
This can be a permanent fix. It will handle all of the pressure that the power steering pump puts out. If there is any rust beyond where the line is repaired, and it's not bad, you can apply "Rust Converter", and it will neutralize the rust, and seal it. After that, the rust will no longer be active. So if it's not leaking at the time of the reapir, it won't leak later. I do agree, if you're changing out the entire line setup, you're going to need to get the vehicle up in the air. I've done a few on other vehicles, and it's definitely not easy, especially a Cadillac CTS where the power steering line is underneath the oil pan and the subframe. Even on my lift, it was not easy.

I attempted this repair without success. It is still leaking, albeit much slower. I did not use the steel compression fittings and if I had it to do over again, I would. The line replacement is $60 for the part from ACDELCO. I spent about the same buying all of the stuff needed for this patch. If I had it to do the entire thing over again, I’d replace the line from the start.

@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 6 жыл бұрын
+MsGoodvids You pull up on the line as you spin it around. Don't be afraid to bend the line a little bit to position it where you need it. I mean, don't kink it, just bend it up to get the tool to rotate around the line.

I used a bolt cutter in the center so the crimping would not affect my new seams. I used a small pipe cutter (with no extended handle - got it from my dad RIP) where the back end was passed into the wheel well. (Note: cut the wheel hard to the right for easier access, but do this BEFORE you cut the line! Found out the hard way!). The front end was also cut easier when I moved it around for the small pipe cutter.

One more question? Do you need to cut the pipe a little shorter then length with the small gap inside the compression fittings or is it ok to cut it the new pipe the same size as the old pipe that was cut ?
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 5 жыл бұрын
You can cut the new pipe the same size as the old pipe as long as it's longer than the two fittings put together. If it's the same size or shorter than the fittings then they're going to be bumping into each other and might not seal both pieces of pipe. Rule of thumb, just cut out at least the lenght of the two connection fittings put together.
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 5 жыл бұрын
You can cut it the same size. Basically once cut, you're going to butt the new pipe as close to flush with the old pipe with the fitting on,.."until it can't be pushed in any further", then you can tighten the compression fitting.

Interesting where you are showing the leak on the high side line next to the side fuse box. I can see the puddle of oil under my car, but its almost directly under the reservoir itself, On the passenger side ! When I first noticed the problem I had to add 1 pint of fluid, that has held but I can tell its still slightly leaking on the reservoir side.. You think its still the high pressure hose ?
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 6 жыл бұрын
If it's directly under the reservoir itself, it very well could be the low pressure side. You're going to have to clean it really well and get a mirror oif some sort to visually find exactly where it's leaking at. It could possibly be a rubber hose, or the clamps to the rubber hose leaking.

Hello, I’m going to be taking on this exact same issue with my 04 Trailblazer and wanting to know if had to unscrew any bolts to loosen up lines to be able to get pipe cutter under them? My lines seem a bit stuck down but, it is winter time and has been -20 so could be reasoning. Also could I use a mini hacksaw to get through the lines if don’t have play with pipe cutter? Thanks 🍻
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 5 жыл бұрын
Basically once you remove them from the boot that holds the line in you just pry it up with your fingers gently. No you are definitely going to have to use the mini pipe cutter. 2 reasons, one being the fact that the saw will make the edges rough and could possibly make them out of shape, you'll have a heck of a time getting those fittings on. Second reason is it would be next to impossible to get anything other than the pipe cutter in that tight of a spot.

@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 6 жыл бұрын
+Kenneth Prince when you change anything on the power steering, you want to turn the steering wheel completely to the right and hold it for a few seconds and then completely to the left and hold it for a few seconds. Do that several times to get the remaining air out of the system. Make sure the power steering reservoir is always topped off so you don't pull in more air if it drops too low.

@Nthefastlane 6 жыл бұрын
+AngusBoom No, the highest fuel hose rating I found was around 300psi. Stock hose is usually around 50psi. Power Steering return line pressure can reach 400psi.

is this a temp. fix, i was told compression fittings will not hold on pressure line too much pressure.

You should have no issues with it holding up. If you're concerned, you can always purchase steel compression fittings, which can handle thousands of PSI.

I've added the Stainless steel compression fittings to the store.

I'm having issues getting the pipe cutter there. Would it be crazy to use a dreemel cutoff?
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 6 жыл бұрын
+travjenkins1 Just pull up on the line a bit, not going to hurt it. You could use the dremel tool but it's going to leave the line with edged and you won't be able to get the compression fittings on easily unless you sand it all down smooth.

travjenkins1 same here. I have an AC line blocking me from getting anything in there.

Just cut the pipe in the middle then you'll have access to both sides easily without having to bend the whole line to spin that pipe cutter around it.

@@zaid3ssaf1 I fixed the low pressure side with some rubber hose and worm clamps. I suspect you would have to use his set up for the high pressure side.

would be easier just to buy the 2 original lines and reinstall since their was rust...obviously the steering sy stem is contaminated with water....rust is caused by water right?

This compression fitting fix will contain the pressure in the lines? What is the pressure 500psi? This is certainly much easier than doing the entire line, seeing that the pump is on the passenger side.
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane Жыл бұрын
This particular repair was the low pressure line. For the high pressure line you could run a flare fitting, say a double flare that are rated for upwards of 5,000+ psi depending on the type of tubing and fittings used.

Because it is not a safety concern.....only safety concerns turn into recalls. If it is not safety related, it is called a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB).....vehicle owner pays for TSB's

That repair is a joke. No real mechanic would do such a fix. Lawsuit pending when it fails. Put in both lines new. Do it right.
