They aired this last night on dutch tv. Im 22 so didnt grew up with them but i recognize so many sounds! Also great bit in the docu about hip hop and To Pimp A Butterfly especially, it’s a great connection for the youth listening to this. Many kids listen to hip hop now but don’t know the jazz drums are the very base of rap, and jazz is sampled so often unknowingly to the listener. 10/10 docu would recommend! Also great footage in it from back in the day, very high quality

Finally Blue Note gets the recognition it deserves worldwide, through a documentary that seems to showcase the label for it's true value in modern history. Jazz is so much more than just music!

Are we finally going to see some video footage of jazz musicians, like Hank Mobley, from which we never seen video footage before? I truly hope so.

Seems like a rose-colored glasses agenda. Blue Note has always been recognized as a stellar jazz "independent" (until Al Lion sold out to Liberty in '65 and TransAm bought Liberty in '68...). Blue Note was unique in that they paid for rehearsals. On the other hand, their contracts typically required the artist to yield all publishing rights, which basically meant that if BN had a hit with your own song, you would not received royalties. Donald Byrd understood this and warned Herbie. Another problem with Lion/Wolff was that they purposely over-recorded several of their artists thereby guaranteeing a stockpile of songs that they wouldn't necessarily have to pay squat on should they release posthumously. Another body of thought about why Lion/Wolff would record Green, Morgan, Mobley, et al so much was simply to support their drug habit. At its worst, when ever Lee, for instance, needed drug money, he's lobby Al for a date... Lee got his drugs and Al got another gem in the can for later release. It was a win/win that was really more like a lose/semi-win in that drugs did damage to all three of those men (and countless others) and most of those in-the-can dates never saw the light of day when those artists were alive (so who knows how the royalties (if any) were paid out). BN was great, of course, and the music (aside from the muffled piano and double bass) was recorded fairly well; but, the business side was dubious.

Is this getting a digital or a blu-ray release anytime soon? Looks fantastic. Would be fantastic to get a doc on the other influential jazz labels too, like Impulse!, CTI, Columbia, GRP or even Tappan Zee - even though apart from the first two big ones, those didn't arguably have the impact Blue Note had...

Thank you very much for your work. The label blue note is wonderful, really great how they treated the poor musicians in such horrible time in the US. How can I give you my money? I watched it on German TV on ARD. Are there any making off material? That documentary is perfectly made, the music is art und making this movie is art to. 10/10. PS: Ist the a music list available? 1h35m a good song I would like to hear (watching on ARD website, second time).
