Daniel Kremer on THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED MINKSY'S

TV’s Norman Lear produced William Friedkin’s good-natured farce about early American burlesque houses and the inadvertent invention of the striptease. Jason Robards plays a fast talking vaudevillian and Britt Ekland is Rachel Schpitendavel, a showbiz hopeful who hits the big time by losing her clothes. The supporting cast is a who’s who of comedians including Elliott Gould, Norman Wisdom, and the great Bert Lahr.

We emphasize "LOOSELY based": Rachel Goofyname didn't exist; the real-life character she was based on was Quaker, not 60's-metaphoric Amish, and was already touring on the burlesque circuit as "Mlle. Fifi". And striptease wasn't invented as a counterculture-metaphoric "rebellion", but, some experts believe, just a reaction to dancers who absent-mindedly started to change their costumes before being completely offstage.

Nice that he mentioned the songs, but Charles Strouse didn't create the song "Take Ten Terrific Girls (But Only Nine Costumes)" on his own. Strouse created "La da da la la la" whereas his long-time collaborator and partner and friend LEE ADAMS wrote the Title AND all the lyrics, including the SUPER sum up: "Then serve it piping hot, and what have you got? A BURLESQUE SHOW" Great song, but let's remember BOTH creators!
