Is an Off-Road Trailer Really Practical for your Overland Adventures?

In this video I share with you my thoughts about overlanding with an off-road trailer while we walk around and take a close up look of the Patriot Campers X2 trailer that I've been borrowing for a few months. There are some pro's and con's to setting out on an overland adventure with a trailer, and being able to comfortably pack all your camping gear, have plenty of onboard water, a large capacity battery setup, and just some of the convinces a trailer can offer are all very appealing. If you are thinking of buying or building an overland trailer for your off-road adventures, I think you will find this video informative.

Great video! I had a different off-road trailer before, but now I have a Patriot X1 and it’s light years ahead of my old one. We had to get over the sticker shock like you mentioned, but once we did, we are 100% satisfied with it. It has made off road adventures and camping with a family so much easier, which means we do it more often.

IMHO, that is EXACTLY the point. If it is going to help you get out there more often and be happier while you are there, then it is a great investment. If not, then don't buy it. And certainly don't whine at me if you're not comfortable. For me, my wife, my kids, and my grandkids, it's a deal breaker. No trailer, no go.

Still too expensive - at that price its just a fun toy for people with a lot of money (and to be fair, alot of overlanding things are). You are getting what you pay for though as the build quality on that thing is incredible.

I just did a quick google search and seemed like the average price was 30K. Some of them were 50 and I saw as low as 27! Not sure if this is accurate but holy cow. I have a 32 ft camper I paid 28k, I can’t go off road but I enjoy my King. Bed and full bathroom 🤣😂🤣😂

It hits a market segment. There are other more affordable options out there that do quite well. Turtleback is one such option. Their owners love them. They do all the stuff you need, but without the overbuilt quality of these Patriot Campers. And also remember that not everyone has a shoestring budget. When you look at the things they do to their Jeeps and other vehicles, one could point out that those too are not inexpensive and a good many people can't afford that either... but some can. ;) These are the Rolex of the overland trailer world. And like you point out, you do get what you pay for; build quality, features, tech etc. But again, if folks want something similar, but with some trade-offs, and at a lower price... there are plenty of other options on the market now. Remember guys it’s not just a trailer. It’s a camper trailer and the best on the market. I live in Brisbane Australia and have seen all the trailers on the market not only here but in the USA. Patriot is the best by far! Also well worth the price in comparison to other camper trailers that you can use for the whole family. Great honest review and love your channel. Not for this price. $55k is way overpriced for what you get. I was stuck between choosing a Patriot or an Escapade camper and the choice was easy. I can sleep inside the Escapade in AC and heat if needed, I have solar power, modified a shower to it, batwing awning, a kitchen galley, and all the storage I can want for $20k. Comes with independent suspension and oversized tires as well. Only thing it doesn’t have is the articulating hitch but I’ve never had it stuck off-road before. These are insanely overpriced.

"just add food and water and go!" that is exactly what we have found. The quicker you can get out the door and go, the more often you will get out the door and go. It is the trailer that got my wife interested in our trips.

I totally understand people calling out the price. $30k is the lower end Patriot. They go over $50k. That being said, it’s all relative. 20 years ago I camped and slept in my truck used a $50 stove and used a cooler with ice. Over time spending $900 on a fridge became a worthwhile purchase. Then spending $3k on a hard case RTT was a good option. Instead of my old Jeep that was worth about $14k turned into a brand new Jeep for $50k with another 10k in suspension, wheels, tires, bumpers, winch, plus a while lot more. People are wheeling with $80k full size overlanding prepped trucks now. It’s all relative to your budget and desires. So spending $30-50k on a trailer that can double your payload, make camping so much more comfortable and efficient -sure why not. I plan on ordering one when the time is right. For those who think it’s so easy to build something yourself- I say, sure you can build something but I doubt it will perform as good, be as efficient and have this level of quality and finish. Sure you’re paying a premium here but you have a platform that been refined over years. Having some dude building something will have issues or inconveniences that you haven’t even considered until after it’s built. Maybe after building 3 or 4 different designs do you realize what works and what doesn’t. All those little details have already been addressed here. Again, you pay for it but for those with the means it’s a great option.

It's not 30 grand, it's more. You still need the tent. Very cool idea, out of my price range. I would only use it at most twice a year. Most of our camping is a motorhome pulling the jeep and doing day trails. If I had this I would do some overlanding.

Recently my suv (kia Sportage) got smashed by the hail in Australia and now decided to save up the money and get myself a Jeep Wrangler as I like camping and want to take it to the next level... was doing some research and stumble across your channel and I absolutely love it!!! When I towed a small cargo trailers years ago and I ended up having to u-turn on a dirt road, I tried for a few minutes and then just ended up unhooking the trailer, making my u-turn, and hooking it back up...

Exactly the same thing happened to me. The track ended up leading to nowhere and I had to do the same as you. Don't know how people do it when they're towing a large off road caravan.

Hey Brad, I gotta say, your videos are just so enjoyable and educational. Also, thanks for your service sir! I looked high and low at overland trailers and in the end I built and customized the Smitty Built Scout trailer. It's a great platform to start with, especially if you can use the same wheels and tires as your tow vehicle as I did with my JKU. This allows me to only carry one spare, and that on the back of the jeep, allowing me to move the front storage box back against the main box area of the trailer, this solving what I consider its only real design flaw as out of the box, that being excessive tongue weight. I added a good quality awning to it with its zip on room, water heater, battery system, Engel fridge/freezer and rear bumper where I place my water storage containers to reduce the tongue weight even further. Wish I could post photos here! All in all I am into it for about $8.5k and very happy with it.

Hey Brad, This is an awesome trailer no doubt, but $30K is outside most people’s price range. You should look into Jumping Jack Tent Trailers of Salt Lake City, Utah. Specifically their 6X8 blackout edition. That’s what I tow behind my 17’ Ram Power Wagon. Combine that with a Lock N Roll articulating hitch and you can’t beat it. Not to mention it less than 1/4 the cost of this, but will go all the same places! Cheers

The dealbreaker for me (in California) is the 55mph freeway speed limit for vehicles with trailers and being relegated to the two right lanes with the semi trucks. I believe we are the only state with that limitation.

old metalhead outdoors mine blew the transmission at 2 miles, computer went bad, all the wiring had to be replaced, pistons, the final straw was the 4x4 drive train melted two months ago. The steel wasn’t even heat treated, the gears melted. It looked awesome but the quality was horrid. I never even got it past 40k miles. Rocking a lifted 2018 F150 now and just bought a Kodiak bed tent. Couldn’t be happier.

@@TrailRecon Patriot do make trays for gladiators with water tanks, rear winches, work/camp lights, tool boxes, storage areas, sliding drawer, central locking, and you can add optional canopies with the full red arc battery management system, and add optional fridges, kitchens etc to them or add your system or keep it as a tray back. Did you see Clay Croft's XOverland gladiator fully kitted with patriot gear and Ronny Dahl's LC with the tray and his own project black canopy? I am based out of South Korea and Philippines at the moment so none of it is available but if it were, with a young family of 4 I'd be keen for a pcor tray (no canopy, or at not at first anyway) and an X2. or maybe one day I can afford the import taxes (which are more than the trailer to import to PI at moment).

I've owned a similar, but different brand of trailer for about 5 years. The price is a bit shocking until you realize you can get RV financing. I pay $210 a month. For me it's totally worth it. A trailer makes getting away so easy and I keep the everyday drivability of my Jeep. You get a tent for 4, lights all around, awning, kitchen, running hot water, shower, storage, and it goes everywhere the Jeep can go.

I can see how it would be convenient as a sort of hub for a group or a catch all/carry all for trips but after doing just a little towing around I can't say I enjoy the added length and complexity involved in using one. Then again you and Ronny Dahl seem to like them and I'm happy a trailer works for your needs. I guess it comes down to "horses for courses" as they say. Be well and happy trails!

The price is steep, but what a professionally thought out piece of equipment. Very impressed with the design and quality of construction. The price would come down with more sales volume. Perhaps Patriot Campers could lease these trailers to folks to get more units in circulation.

Looks like a great option if you have the smaller two door jeep. Because all your camping needs are in or on the trailer. Keeps your Jeep as a good daily driver by keeping any gear off of it.

I think for people who overland often enough like maybe every few weeks and whatnot, then yes. Cry once(very hard because its expensive) buy once. But for people like Brad and ronnydahl who hit the trails often It'll pay off. If your a person who goes out on a trip maybe once or twice a year, then not really. I built my own Morris Mule knockoff with Timbren axle-less suspension, 20 gallon onboard water, tent rack that can lower/raise using linear actuators, Smittybilt XL tent with annex room, ARB 2500 awning with awning room, onboard propane, tongue box with AGM battery, solar controller, inverter, various lights and water heater plus plenty of storage. Rolling on the identical 5x150 (110 bore, 12mm offset) wheels as my Land Cruiser with the same 275/70/18 KO2 tires. I run the lock-n-roll articulating hitch. All in, under $8k. Not sure why on earth I'd spend $30. My little trailer has been drug all over Big Bend National Park (Black Gap road, etc), Big Bend State Park, several passes in Colorado (Medano, Tincup, Cinnamon, Engineer, Imogene, Ophir, California, Hurricane and a few more) and all over the Gila National Forest in NM. It's been solid and reliable. Makes a great basecamp. At only 1400lbs fully loaded, it tows with zero issues.

I have a Turtleback Expedition Trailer that I love. I have taken it on the whole White Rim Trail and in the Maze of Canyonlands N P. It can almost go anywhere my Rubicon can.

We currently have a Smittybilt Scout trailer and really been interested in the X3 but concerned about the wife’s JKU being able to handle it on the freeway. The Smittybilt at 1700lbs loaded gives the JKU a run for its money coming through the Rocky Mountains on our way west to Moab.

I really want a trailer like that but I'll eventually get around to doing a DIY. $30K is far too much to justify even though I see where the money went on that. [They need to figure out a more economical trickle down version IMO, but that is beside the point.] You touched on it, but I love the fact that you can store all your camping gear in it permanently and just hook up and go on a weekend maximizing your time outdoors not packing. I really only do small weekend warrior trips so that convenience is huge. Plus I have a 2 door TJ and making it an overlander is not at all practical, but setting up camp somewhere and then wheeling the TJ nearby without the excess weight is.

I actually looked at these and several others. I ended up with a nucamp t@g boondocks tear drop. Half the price and it has ac! Really recommend. Also your wifes jeep can tow 3500. As of 2016 all 2 doors with 3.73 gears or higher are rated for 3500lbs. That's in the manual. Great vid.

The Australian $1.00 is worth $.66 cents US. Just on exchange rates that trailer is worth $19,800 US. Australian cost to build can not be more than $6,534 US. if that. That said, the trailer design seems functional and practical. Is the trailer worth the premium, not so much. Another good video however, thanks for sharing the novelty.

Mustang Sally Building anything in Australia is very expensive. Everything here is much more expensive than the US. They are not cheap trailers but they hold their value well. I have an X1.

For all the people griping about the price. Something to bear in mind about an item like this. There is a lot of time, money, testing, and research involved. Patriot fabricates all of the steel components for this. CNC laser tables, CNC press brakes are very expensive. Quality welders are not cheap. If you need lathes or mills, that adds to the cost, as well as trained operators. You also need people with the skill to use the CAD/CAM software to program the CNC machines, weld it together. Add in the cost of the sheet metal, outside vendors who supply things you cannot fabricate, paint, electrical components, wheel bearings,......Then there are the little things people don't consider, the cost of all the small tools, filler wire, shielding gas, drills, clamps, power cords/cables, fabrication tables, custom jigs to do repeat work, etc. Also there is the building cost, power cost, and so forth. All of the previously mentioned components costs money. Once you get to the point of repeatable production, managed time per unit goes down, your profit goes up, but that takes a while to get to that point. I know what is involved as I run my own fab business.

We pull a Highland Expedition Outfitters T3 trailer. Paid around $9000. Included side room annex and Cascade roof top tent. We pulled it 16000 miles Offroad to date.

In between all the cool places you go and wonderful food you eat, it would be nice to learn what people do for sanitation. Toilet, dishwater, trash, etc. Leave no trace doesn't just happen, it takes planning and a bit of a change of lifestyle.

The main thing I would want a trailer for is as a base camp, instead of breaking camp if I want to explore in my rig, just unhook and secure the trailer then explore. That price is too much for me.

Would be great for a club either 4x4 ,hunting, or anything else. Maybe expensive but i can see a few friends splitting the cost and using it as a base to store shared equipment,hunting gear and have a place to cook and get power. Just imagine 4-5 vehicles going for a few days 4wding and only one needs to tow a trailer that provides all the goodies. 4wd clubs could use one for their members to enjoy

i see alot of comments all about the price. and for most people who go camping 2- 3 times a year, a 30-40k luxury purchase is not practical. but for all the comments, i see a good business opportunity for you. pick up a couple of these and rent them out. 30k is a lot but 1k for a week with all the comfort and convenience, would make it and the overall camping experience a lot better. you have a market with your channel, people with the desire and money already likely will find you so you can market the service at no cost. You already know the fellas down under, talk to them get them to front you a couple trailers and test the market, if there is just no demand, they can just sell them no harm no foul. I believe your are a military man and not the type to abscond with 100k worth of product, so whats the risk. just my 2 cents

Trailer looks good. Expensive yes but great kit if you can afford it. I see the value in both ready made and build it yourself trailers.

It's the best...for a RTT trailer. I prefer the type of overland trailer that you actually sleep in though.

Ha! The sink, I buy those things off of Amazon. They are great to have. Icy water for the dog to washing my feet. I use the hell out of those things. But the price of that trailer is kind of crazy. Overlanding is not a hobby. It's how we live and survive.

The trailer costs more than my newish truck. Luckily in Texas trailers are titled and I can get up to my eyeballs in debt and finance a $40,000 trailer. Imagine having a higher monthly payment for your trailer than your truck.

Just a fyi..In Texas the requirement to title a trailer is based on weight. I believe that anything over 10,000 has to be titled, anything under is at the discretion of the owner.

I don't really have any strong interest in this as I'm not all too interested in pulling a trailer around, but just for giggles I went to the manufacturer's website. My eyes bugged out. I was thinking this would have been a pricey little addition at $3-$5k... it turns out these are $30-$50k?!?! You have GOT to be kidding me! The company is in business so people must be buying these, but I can't even begin to fathom how.

So many cry babies. If you don’t have the money, fine. Keep scrolling. I can’t afford it, but I get it for sure with all the features involved. If you’re seriously into overlanding, and your vehicle is slam packed with gear already, this is a great option with capability and creature comforts. Great review! Maybe if I win the lotto some day I’ll buy one!

This is a great trailer and very popular here in Australia - it is certainly one of the most expensive but attention to detail and build quality is excellent. I tested one towed by my FJ Cruiser and loved it. Did I buy one? No. The cost was too high and we have an excellent range of off road trailers Down Under.

What model did you tow with your FJ? Can the FJ handle towing an X1 or would the X2 be better for the FJ? Based in the Philippines. Have an Fj and thinking whether or not it is worth paying the import taxes on the trailer before I go any further.

Great overview Brad. I wonder if a adjustable backup camera would be helpful. Backing up would be much easier. And if you have a way to capture some footage it would be great to include some trailer video on your channel. As far as the price, if you can afford to be wheeling out in trails every weekend in a very expensive Jeep then you can afford this rig! Right!

Nice comprehensive review. I would love to see you review a few other trailers (if you can get the chance to do so). I myself have been seriously thinking about a nice teardrop design, like Off-Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0... though it is 7.5feet wide, and just under 14ft long... .for medium trails and roads it would be a comfy ride, especially with a heater/ac unit attached for here in Alaska. And it starts a bit less than that Patriot, but could easily add up with options fast. If you get a chance on your drive up here to Alaska... try and stop by there shop in Chilliwak, BC and do an interview on your way north . A teardrop would be nice in that one would not have to set up and climb up into a "roof" tent, and a hard shell would better protect one from hungry bears than a thin piece of cloth.

I'm not knocking this whole Overlanding craze, but I could sleep in a lot of nice hotels and eat at a shitload of nice restaurants for $30k. If I was retired and traveled full time I might be able to justify the cost. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell me I don't grasp the overlanding concept though.

Pricey, but for a family of 3 or 4 this trailer would be a nice consideration if the budget allowed for it. Especially if the Jeep is a DD and getting it all caked up isn't desired. Definitely a nice piece of kit though. I'll just need to hope and wait until someone buys one and decides they need/want to sell it.

I agree, not everyone can have a dedicated adventure vehicle, so having the fridge, water and storage on the trailer can be a big benefit.

Do you think you might try a tear drop trailer where you sleep in the trailer and carry your gear in your Jeep? It would be cool for you to try one and compare to the Patriot.
