I did this trail 100% by myself at 19 years old in 2005 in a 98 TJ with a 4 inch lift and 35 Toyo Mudterrains. No lockers, no spotters. Smooth as butter. Never saw another vehicle the entire day. At one point, when the Jeep was teetering on two wheels in the breeze, I couldn't resist the urge to pop out the side and get a photo of her. Still have that photo. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.

Several years ago I started down Cliffhanger with a group of avid Jeepers. I was in my then unmodified 1993 Toyota pickup. It wasn't much past the creek crossing that I realized I was in way over my head. Myself, and a couple in an older Land Cruiser decided to turn back. We ended up having to wait for the main group to come back so we could get winched up the last obstacle to the road. What an experience.

Might get a Tazer to keep your settings as they were each time you cycle the ignition. That said, I made it to the Cliff Hanger creek crossing in my JTR, 37s on Mopar lift, and called it there. So glad to see what the rest of the trail looks like. Heart pounding just watching you go over the obstacle twice! 👍🏻👍🏻👏👏

10 foot ledge huh? LoL maybe 4 feet , but I do love that you get 4 great obstacles in the first 100 yards of that trail and then you get many very nice spots to wheel and no shortage of obstacles....what I don't like about that trail is it is not a loop which the in and back out creates issues of traffic. Great pucker trail. Keep your S#!T wired tight at all times.

Yeah, camera was a bit too close to see the full thing. Probably could call it more of a waterfall with a 4 foot ledge at top. But absolutely agree. This trail is amazing, but it is completely understandable why people don't want to do it. Lets go wheeling this weekend Joe. Big Bear is a calling.

All good. I think it is more like a 6 waterfall with an almost vertical ledge that is about 4 feet at the top. So to skip a long explanation that is why I said that. But the camera doesn't do it justice at all. It wasn't good feeling in the jeep. --- Josh

Good video. I've been up Cliffhanger several times. Probably the best conditions for 2 wheel or navigating a jeep up Cliffhanger is to wait until after a rain and be the first to climb the rock. The sand deposits in dry conditions can really slip a tire.

So you are right on the cliff. But there is a small area that might catch the vehicle if you rolled off. might. But you would have to be doing something really insane to go off the cliff as the climb is flat and leans towards the cliff.

Hi. Bought my first ever jeep. What did you mean when you stated near video end "Lockers turn off with every key cycle?" Thx

When I started the obstacle I knew I would need everything the Jeep can do. So I engaged both front and rear lockers, but what you didn't see is I tried to get out of the Jeep half way up. So I turned off the Jeep to get out. Long story short, I couldn't exit the vehicle without climb through the window. So I had my spotter describe what I wanted to see and he placed a few rocks. I then restarted the Jeep and continued up and out. My spotter asked me why I didn't try my lockers noticing they were off. (Almost the entire trip I purposely didn't use my lockers). My spotter knowing this asked why I had them off on the obstacle. Well, I turned them on at the bottom and assumed they would stay on after the key cycle like the sway bar. I never double check that they were on or off. Mostly because I was focusing in on the moment. So that is what I mean by that. ---- Josh

Why don't you use your lockers?

This is a great question. There are a few reasons, some are good, others not so much. Below is my reasoning with reason too. Let me know what you think? To start, you should always enter an obstacle that you know you will likely need lockers with your lockers on. Engaging your lockers while in an obstacle can sometimes cause the lockers not to fully engage and could cause problems such as breakage. So why I don't run with my lockers 99.99% of the time 1.) Overwhelmingly less wear and tear on your driveline. This one is a good one and I think about it constantly. 2.) Drastically lowers your chances of breaking. For me, I am pretty gentle on the Jeep, so this one isn't on my list of reasons. But for someone that is newer, it should be. 3.) Running no lockers makes it much easier to stay on a line. With one tire not spinning, you won't slide around. This can help in certain situations. 4.) This is one I do pay watch out for but it drastically reduces the chances of getting steering lockup. 5.) This one is 100% me. But, I personally like the challenge, the harder it is, in my opinion, the more fun you will have. I am a firm believer that the people who struggle more than others are having more fun. When you have to earn the trail it makes it fun. This is why my other jeep is a manual trans. 6.) This is a very bad one and I don't recommend doing this. Now, if you are open open and you get stuck. You can turn on your lockers and likely get yourself unstuck. But go back to what I opened up with. This is risky. But the truth be told, I think I have only had to do this a couple times ever. Before going into an obstacle I am usually pretty confident I will make it through or will be able to back out. If I doubt it at all, I engage the lockers at least 15 feet before the obstacle to ensure they are fully engaged. Now the debatable one. Driving with no lockers on is actually drastically better for the trail. The reason for that is when you are running your lockers on, both tires move at the same speed. If you turn at all, it is tearing up the ground as one tire is either moving fast or slower than the ground it is passing over. Now.... The big thing is if you spin your tires at all and your lockers could have kept you from spinning, plus it is in a spot that can take damage such as dirt, lockers could do less damage than being open in that instance. So that is why some people have the opposite view. Why use your lockers 1.) Lockers can help make quick work of an obstacle. If the group is moving fast I will often engage them on anything I question or think might be hard. 2.) Lockers will ensure that you can take your vehicle to its limits and beyond. This allows you to do drastically harder obstacles than you can open open. Meaning you can do harder trails and get to more unique places that fewer people have been to. if a 4 door dodge can do it any real CJ can breeze right through. but thanks to the eico nuts and for profit groups like the sierra clup 60% of the jeep roads in the moan area are now closed and can only be used by card careing member of special hiking clubs. all others will be arrested for trespassing.
