I had seen a derailment of a few cars once. Was amazed at the response of the recovery team. The derailment happened two hours before sunset so it was getting dark at the recovery team arrived. They brought along two of the shortest and squattest cranes i had ever seen. Despite the setting sun, the recovery team looked flawless as the rigged up their cranes with counterweights. The most difficult part appeared to be the overhead electric/telephone lines left very little room for error. The cranes had to use their own hoist to mount the counterweights and doing that in the dark, surrounded by utility poles just made it look all the more impressive. There were perhaps 15-29 men on the team and they did an astonishing job straightening everything out before midnight.

For those not in the know, this is ex PRR. PRR called this the "Richmond branch." Richmond, In to Cincinnati,Oh. The line had the James Whitcomb Riley Amtrak train pulled from this line in 1974 due to crappy track. By Conrail this line was local service only and was slated to be pulled up. As a result of CR, N&W wanted this line and they got it. Then N&W PUMPED a bunch of money into this line and through trains began running about 1978-79. The McDonalds in Richmond,In(Rt. 40 bordering the RR overpass) had photos from steam days of this line on it's walls for decorations. The McDonalds went through a renovation and after this covid hit and I doubt the photos remain. I was at this Mcdonalds a few months ago(eating outside,,,covid) and the Lackawanna unit went through.

Great catch, Son! That NS 122 originates in Chattanooga and is headed to Decatur, IL. The train on the ground is likely the NS 142 that originated in Irondale, AL and would have gone to Elkhart, IN. Both trains would take the NS New Castle District thru Muncie, IN then onto the NS Frankfort District. I often catch them around Muncie and post videos on my KZbin channel. Keep up your fine work!

Yeah, your typical MK1, MOD 0 derailment. With all the banged up and twisted steel, hoppers and gondolas thrown around it looks like a giant kid threw a temper tantrum. Clearing a major derailment like this as quickly as they do is pretty much a science and requires sound engineering practices. It's amazing and eye opening to watch. Thanks JT.

W C FYI: On the railroad I worked for the reality is, we were not allowed to talk to anyone about the details of an accident except the local or state police that was investigating the accident. I’m fairly sure the other railroads have the same policy. And if I remember right that policy is in the GCOR, ( the rule book ) also. Even with out that restriction I would not even talk to the news media. I learned about fake news in the early 70s.

Anyone here know if those rails are used by Amtrak? I know Amtrak used to stop in Hamilton on a line from Indiana to Cincinnati and beyond. I am just curious as I know this line is always very busy with Trains. I used to operate the Train at Americana Amusement Park back in the 80's and yes we had a few derailments. While driving those Trains we always could tell if a car jumped the rail. I wonder if it would be the same with these big Trains?? Definitely scary with derailments, I was always worried we would end up in the Lake, lol. We had at least a dozen derailments within my 5 or so years working at Americana. I spent many summers during my young life.

Nice coverage JT, fortunately no hazmat, that always makes things dicey. Yeah, unfortunately RR and LE limit how close you can get, but all for safety. The geographically N.bound but NS E.bound reminds me of Southern Pacific. Towards San Francisco was always called west bound, away from San Francisco was always eastbound no matter which way it was geographically.

@tthinker98974 жыл бұрын
In most of the country the train rail bed deteriorates and erodes under a section of track causing the rails to sag and become dislodged. After that happens the only thing left is for a train to pass over the destabilized rails and the cars just roll off.
