Tight Railroad Curve & Railroad Tunnel In The City! Not Many Railfans Know There Is A Railroad Tunnel This Close To Cincinnati! Big CSX Train With DPU & Local Switching Freight Train Passes Solar Powered Flange Greaser & Enters Tunnel just a few miles south of Cincinnati. These trains are in Covington, Kentucky. Covington is a city in northern Kentucky with a population of 40,466. Latonia is a neighbourhood of Covington. It was a city at one time and it had Tims Trains And Hobbies right next to the CSX main line. That was my favorite hobby shop until it closed a couple years ago. I use to go there and look at the model trains while waiting for a freight train to pass by. I always bought something every time I went and it was a sad day when it closed. Just before they closed a lifelong friend of mine passed away and his family sold all of his HO scale trains here. He had a ton of stuff and I bought quite a few pieces. The tracks in front of the hobby shop are ex Louisville & Nashville Railway L&N. This is a no train horn zone so you need to have your scanner programmed to 161.370 and 160.230 but don't use the EOT frequency here because it will be chirping all the time since there are rail yards nearby. The intro to this video was filmed in front of the nearby Railway Museum Of Greater Cincinnati. There was a loaded rail train sitting there. The first train in this video is an auto racks train with a DPU headed from Cincinnati Queensgate Yard to Louisville, Kentucky on the CSX Short Line. Notice how it winds around the sharp curves and passes Tim's Trains.
The next train was filmed just a little over a half mile to the north. This is where the CSX tunnel is located and you can see a solar powered flange greaser. Not many rail fans come here. The area is a little sketchy. This is the south portal of the tunnel. I would stay away from the north portal. That area just isn't the best place to be and I was yelled at by a lady and I don't know why. I couldn't understand what she was yelling at me. Just north of that spot I also had a guy who was under the influence of something want to have me film him. I did but I didn't post it. I did get a great video of a guy walking in front of a train just north of the tunnel and then walk on the other track with a train coming on that one also. Remember that video? There was also a group of ppl fighting there recently and a couple of ppl were shot so I shy away from the area just north of the tunnel to the Ohio River. I have a fake wallet that I carry when I am in that area. A friend of mine use to work for a sound company right next to the tracks in that area. One time a bullet hit something right next to him while he was at his desk. That bummed him out. On the plus side he did see the circus train there a few times.
Filmed July 12, 2022

I think the locos are from the 1990's and are getting a "3" added to number. They have radio lightning symbol.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the lightning symbol on CSX locomotives denotes AC power, not being radio equipped. All locomotives have radios, these days -- there's no need for a symbole for that.
@robertd.shannon9007
@robertd.shannon9007 Жыл бұрын
@@beeble2003 Agreed, the symbol usually denotes radios which by now are common. It suggests to me that the loco has not seen the paint shop.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 Жыл бұрын
@@robertd.shannon9007 I don't understand why you say "Agreed" and then repeat your position, which is the opposite of mine. The locomotive CSX 7260, seen at 2:11, is a GE AC44CW, which has lightning flashes and AC power. CSX 3026 (6:18) is a GE ES44AC-H: lightning flash and AC power. CSX 8839 (15:00) is an EMD SD40-2: no lightning flash, DC power. CSX 5254 (15:11) is a GE ES40DC: again, no lightning flash, DC power. This has nothing to do with radios. All locomotives have radios. All locomotives had radios in the 1990s. None of these locomotives has had a 3 added to its number. CSX 3026 has carried that number since it was built, in 2012. None of the others begins or ends with 3.

B.D., you make a GREAT point! I know that in Flagstaff, it is a "Quiet Zone" UNLESS some idiots are crossing the track with a fast BNSF train coming near them. In that case, the engineer DOES blow the horn as many times as needed. And I was there one time when some German tourists got off their tour bus and were taking photos of the approaching freight train. They were beyond the yellow line at the train station and too close to the track and the engineer had to sound the horn several times to get them to move back. Some people just do NOT think of the dangers of approaching trains and being too close to them.

Two slow movers in a row! They were in no hurry at all. You're right about one thing, and that the trains are growing longer and longer. I am also curious to know what the purpose of a flange greaser is for.
@Clavichordist
@Clavichordist Жыл бұрын
The flange greasers help the flange-part of the wheels slide better around tight curves. Boston's MBTA Green line light rail system uses some for the tightest curve on the system located between Boylston Street and Park Street in the tunnel. Even with the greaser, the flange squeal is quite loud and very characteristic for the system and quite loud because it's in the tunnel. For a good example look up Boylston Street station on KZbin. I'm not crazy about those super-long trains. They actually cause more problems for the communities because they don't just block a couple of crossings, but many, many more. The railroads, especially up here in the Northeast, have run into issues with them on some of the lines such as the Sunbury line, with trains stalling out and getting stuck. The only solution was to break the train apart and move it in chunks over the line. The other issue the railroads are experiencing is lack of storage for these trains because they're so long they don't fit on sidings or in yards. The purpose of them, I think was to save labor costs more than anything because they can run fewer larger trains which means less crew at the expense of everything else. I'm sure if the board of directors could, they would order the CEO to offshore the operations!
@tompoleet7665

The Flange Greasers put grease just on the Flanges so the rails do not wear out too fast and to help quiet that noise you’d hear especially on curved tracks. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@chrishuffman5829
@chrishuffman5829 Жыл бұрын
Over time tight curves eatthe flanges down on the outer drive axles.... They were even bad for it since the GP7 era.. If flanges war down so much past specs some yards masters give warnings about it.. It does also help somewhat cut down on noises as well too.

Beware of the imprudent person who would have entered the tunnel in spite of the ban, because I have already observed some! He should only save himself by jumping on the track opposite to the one where the train arrives! Very risky because in the darkness of the tunnel the observation of the lights of the train which arrives does not make it possible to know for sure on which track it circulates.

The no horn thing just baffles me and makes zero sense .Where I live a lot of the times they just go around the gates and the horn eventually gets their attention .My GF came as close to death as she ever has riding in a vehicle with one of these morons .The woman just drove on totally ignoring the fast moving train just a few yards away .The driver's excuse was the train had to stop for her not the other way around .My gf an avid lifelong railfan was livid and let her have it even using some not so nice words .She did ask the engineer a longtime friend of hers who does this local run just how much he missed them by ? His reply was no more than 3 feet at the most .She apologized and found it ironic after nearly 60 years of safe and respectful railfanning she nearly got killed by an idiot in a car near our home .Naturally if this woman had gotten hit it would have been the train at fault .People should really be more careful around trains .They are far larger and moving faster than they appear to be due to their size .A lot of times it is the horn that saves lives not the gates when dealing with idiots .

What difference does a train horn make to somebody who is going to ignore a gate, ignore flashing lights and ignore a warning bell? Train horns are a nuisance to anybody living within half a mile of the tracks, and that's why so many no horn zones exist. And the horn can always be used in an emergency, such as when a car does ignore the gates, ignore the flashing lights and ignore the bells.
@jim874
@jim874 Жыл бұрын
There is a no horn zone that JT films at occasionally in Glendale Ohio. The city got with the railroads and fenced in the track, closed a few crossings and then put crossing gates across the entire road to stop idiots from trying to drive around them.

Hey JT, that Latonia location might be the most noisiest location you have ever filmed. The "SORE" and "ANTI" train cars were neat. OMG! Where are my ear plugs? Are the DPUs manned or un-manned? I think the latter. Regarding train stores, more and more of them are closing down since kids and teens of today just do not have the interest in model trains than in past generations. I would HATE to be illegally trespassing inside the tunnel with a train coming. And the sounds of your dog and the yogurt were funny. Thanks for sharing!

According to KZbinr djstrains, who's a CSX engineer and should know, the DPUs are unmanned and the engineer connects to them by Bluetooth. What did we do before cell phones, eh?
@DougCeleste
@DougCeleste Жыл бұрын
@@idwmac Thanks for the interesting info, Ian. I figured that they were usually unmanned since I have never seen an engineer in one. And I have seen some hobos on YT go into DPUs to make their train rides more comfortable, although illegal.

You get that jerky frame skip at 1080 where I don't see it in 4k. Good thing I had my shades on when I watched this. Judging by that first train, the future moves pretty slow too. And the future has great graffiti as well.

My understanding has been most auto racks cars on south bound trains over that route are empty. Obviously not all of them. There is a huge Ford assembly plant just outside Louisville. There are 3 daily southbound auto racks over this route. I am guessing this is M217 which originates in Philadelphia That one usually has a single engine in the lead + a dpu. M205 another auto rack form New England almost never has a dpu. 2 manifests M573 and M575 both from Queensgate Yard to Nashville usually has some auto rack cars. Maybe 10 to 15. There is a 6th train which used to be about half auto rack is now all intermodal.

Like you, JT, I make mental notes sometimes with particular cars and their graffiti. Like the "MOXY" covered hopper we see on the CET. There's no mistaking that car. I've paused the video and took pics of it. Maybe one day I can find someone to "weather" one like that for my layout. And regarding 4k vs. 1080, I think the 1080 is better definition, especially when I pause the vids. I do this often while watching, to read load limits or empty weights on particular cars, or other details about the train. But it seems you have to be more gentle with the camera movement while "filming" .. and there's a term a lot of us still use, but fact is there are very few people, if any, using film cameras nowadays .. Thanks for another great video.
