Train Goes Into Building To Get Boxcars! Working A Short Line Railroad Industrial Spur! Pennsy RR

2 Trains work the industrial track at the same time. These trains are in Columbus, Indiana on short line railroad Louisville & Indiana Railroad. First we see a maintenance of way work train enter the branch line spur with clean yellow ballast cars. Then a local switcher goes up the industrial spur to set off 2 cars for a scrap dealer and back the locomotive into a building to pick up 2 boxcars. The video starts with me on my bicycle trying to get to a good spot to film while the train was coming. I had my scanner on 160.725 and I was heading for the huge trestle until I realized that they were lining the switch for the nearly 3 mile spur. I put my bike in the truck and headed to the end of the spur to film the action. It was difficult to film due to traffic and light. There was just enough light to film them switching the last customer but when they returned to the main line it was completely dark. This video shows them enter the main and reline the switch for the main. The switch was lined for the spur the entire time that the local was on it since there were no other trains approaching. The next train on the main was an L&I northbound road freight that passed Columbus at 8:01pm. That same train went through here south at 9:51pm with the 2 boxcars from the spur on the very end of their train. No other trains went through Columbus until 5:55am when a CSX southbound freight passed. I got a room at the Indigo Motel on the top floor facing the railroad, room 402. I will be putting together a video showing the view from the room and more trains in Columbus. I filmed this on October 22, 2020. Thanks for watching!

That L&I train looks awesome at night w the light reflecting off of it. The industrial area was definitely a cool place to catch it especially when it picked up the 2 boxcars at the end of the line.

Another great discovery by our Intrepid Explorer, finding another previously nearly anonymous short line. How does he do it? Persistence, Son, persistence. And an excellent nose for railfanning. Other railfans would have thought it enough just to show the locomotive. Not Jaw Tooth. He gives us the story behind the pictures. That’s why he’s the best. No contest.

I haven't heard a hot box detector like that for a while. Fascinating piece of technology, really. We used to listen in when chasing trains in Three Bridges, NJ., on the scanner. "Three hundred, twelve axles, no defects..." How in the world they detect a problem on a particular axle on a freight going 60mph just floors me. But then again, maybe I'm just easily amused/perplexed....lol 😎🇺🇸

Hello again from the UK. Really interesting video. Just when I have got used to seeing US trains street running we move on to the next level and see a train going into a building. A lot of US specific terminology here too, for example switching and switches. In the UK we call them 'points'. Watching the work at the end of the line is far more interesting than just watching the trains running along a main line.

Hey Jawtooth, that spur once went all the way to Madison Indiana. If you look on Google earth you'll see it ends on the south end of Columbus today, but the remnant right of way is visible down to North Vernon. There is still an abandoned cantilever bridge at the end of this spur, but no tracks on it. LIRC did build an additional siding going up to that bridge for storage I assume. That job on that side of town is busy everyday as they serve the metal yard, cardboard factory, and the plastic furniture company.

This is what railroads should do, service their customers. Happy customers lead to nice profits. Making the low operating ratio leads to fat managment bonuses and investor happiness and unhappy customers. That will lead to the "disappearing railroad blues".
