CSX Train With Double DPU Power Goes Under Norfolk Southern Main Line! Then A Norfolk Southern Train With A DPU Locomotive Shoving The Rear Books Over Same Bridge! Radar Speed Checks On 2 Trains & Big CSX Train With Open Boxcar Door Passes Under Railroad House. Horn Salute With Friendly Crews And 5 Trains In Walton, Kentucky At The Oldest House In The City.
I was trying to get some new angles for CSX and Norfolk Southern trains at the Abner Gaines property that the city of Walton, Kentucky owns. First we go to the rear of the property to get a big CSX train going under the NS line. This train left Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati just hours earlier and was headed to Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after it passed a Norfolk Southern train with a DPU on the rear came speeding across the bridge running from Gest Street Yard in Cincinnati to Chattanooga, Tennessee on the line that Norfolk Southern is in the process of buying from the city of Cincinnati.
Then we go to the front of the Abner Gaines home and get 2 fast NS trains headed to Cincinnati. Due to popular demand I brought the radar unit out again. I keep forgetting to use it so I finally used it on the last two trains in the video. The trains never go as fast as they look. The best Railfan tool is a scanner. Scanners are a must have. I never Railfan without at least two of them. They really help out a lot. You get advance notice of approaching trains and you can plan out your shots that way. Learning how to properly use a scanner is a skill. My best advice is to listen to the least amount of frequencies as possible but make sure that you have the road channels and if you are in remote areas make sure to use the EOT to get notice of trains approaching that are not using radio signals.
The last train is a northbound CSX manifest running behind the Abner Gaines home. I was leaving when I heard the train approaching so instead of missing it by minutes I was able to film it and then leave without any down time. I did a radar check on this train. It's common for the speed of long trains to fluctuate slightly. This train had a boxcar with an open door and a strip of taped going over the opening. I was thinking about Shoestring when I saw the open boxcar door. This is the first time I have got that shot and I'm wondering if it was any good. The highway traffic next to it was very noisy. What do you think? Which train and which scene is your favorite? This is my first time back in Walton in a month.
