A few things….. One, interior details are a must. Second, as for those corridors between the carriages, try putting a window, 1x2x2, in place of the upper two bricks. Oh, and try to make sure that window is the panel version with rounded corners and not that stupid version from the most recent Hogwarts Express train’s side windows, which is a full brick in size. And third, try offsetting the lower two rows of gold plates by one stud, it’ll increase structural integrity. Also try splurging a little and getting four 1x6 gold plates for just above the doors, it’ll make them more secure. And fourth and finally, try locking together the walls and the between carriage corridors to provide more strength to the overall build. How one does that is up to you. Rockatoa, Brickticks out! P.S. You do know there are more modern versions of that 6x28 stud train base, right? The one you have is from the 12V era, buts ones do exist in black for more modern 9V and RC style systems. Just thought I’d let you know. Bye.

1) yes several people have mentioned hat I need to do an interior, I’ll put it on my growing list of “things to do” 2) thanks for the idea for the window in the corridor connector door. I know the window you mean it’s the one they used to use in 80’s and 90’s planes, and the Emerald night used for its doors. I’ve also seen some people use two backwards headlight bricks, to make two smal let side-by-side windows (without glass of course!) 3) I’ve put instructions for this on Rebrickable, and have replaced 1x2’s with 1x6’s as you’ve suggested, but when I bought the parts for this MONTHS ago, they weren’t on Lego.com and not enough on Bricklink! they are easier to get hold of now! 5) I know what you mean, like with the emerald night, have a fixed piece of roof at each end for structure all integrity and just have the middle part removable.TBH removing roofs and doing interiors aren’t something I usually bother with, as long as it holds together when it’s built is my main concern. 6) Yes, the newer version has only 3 technic holes at each end. When I was buying the parts, this one was in a shop that I was already buying from and it was slightly cheaper than the newer version, so as the holes did not make a difference to me, I got the old 80s version, also… nostalgia. 7740 is my favourite train of all time!

In my humble opinion, the double stripe doesn't look great when scaled up to 3 plates thick. Yes, the movie version technically has a double stripe, but it's tiny in comparison. Hi Jez, I wonder if you've considered using the triple wedge plate 52031 and the associated double 32739 for the roof. It would have studs on it but would be lower than the one you have so that the carriage is more like the other city trains.
@MinifigJezАй бұрын
They are the parts used on the most recent 60337 "Express Passenger Train" The 2x4 curved slopes that I'm using are 2 plates tall, and the roof pieces used are also two plates tall, so a direct swap wouldn't reduce the height. I'd need to remove the 6x9 black plates too to decrease the height but it could only be by 1 plate. It would definitely make it easier to build, and probably reduce the cost too, as a few larger parts are definitely cheaper than all those slopes and tiles!!!!!! - I suppose I could achieve teh same height decrease, but making the red plate layer the 6x8 plates, and build the black slopes on top of that. I think I prefer the look of the slopes, as this is tying to look like a real train rather than a Lego City train. But I;m definitely going to see what it looks like by removing the black plate layer. Thanks so much for commenting and giving me ideas.

Hello Minfig Jez, I do like the bogie detail to your carriage. Did you consider using the same door design as The Emerald Knight Express Passenger Train? What about installing both the tile flooring and seats into the carriage? Regarding the mid height stripe, if you look carefully and closely it is actually gold/black/gold. Personally I prefer the extended carriage version from set 75955 with the same door design as The Emerald Knight and five 1x4x3 windows as designed by Fugatech LEGO, however as mentioned above I do like your bogie design. Best wishes and take care, Kind regards, Peter Skuce, St Albans. Hertfordshire.
@MinifigJezАй бұрын
Thanks Peter, I'm glad you liked it. - I'll try to make sure I get to all your points: 1) Yes I did look at the Emerald Night doors (I have 2 of the sets), but I just LOVE the old 80's train doors as they match the classic train windows so well, (My favourite train of all-time is 7740) so when I realised that Lego now do the new mould in red in both doors, I just HAD to use them! 2) I hadn't thought of doing an interior, but I will add it to my very long list of things I need to do, and when I get round to it, I'll make sure I upload a video about it. 3) I'd never noticed the stripe was black in between the two golds stripes, but that is definitely a VERY easy fix, just a few black plates. - Thanks for letting me know. 4) The 75955 engine is the best engine, and the coach is ok, but it still makes me sad that it uses standard Lego City building windows. FugaTech's coach is really nice, the only part I'm not fond of is the windows. But as a fellow Brit, if you ever travelled on old BR coaches, I'm sure you'll agree with me that I have to commend his under carriage details, which are very good. But the coach does need to lose the ladders at each end. I imagine being from the USA he added them to look like steps, similar to USA trains, but he didn't realise that UK trains don't need them as our platforms are always at door level! And like you said, with the bogie details, UK trains always have some suspension detail and the two wheel sets need to be spaced slightly apart on his model, like Lego used to do with their passenger trains, and their train motors. Thanks so much for commenting, best wishes to you and St Albans.
@mattwhelan13Ай бұрын
very cool, though I must say that I always imagined the coaches only having doors on one side as we know they have a corridor down one side and compartments on the other plus the train is single use so it's not like it needs to be flexible. Would be interested to see you add the interior walls if not a fully detailed interior and see if that makes you change your door / window placement.
@MinifigJezАй бұрын
That’s a good point, let me try to explain. I grew up travelling on coaches in England like the ones used in the films. This type of British Rail compartment coach doesn’t have the seating compartments all the way to the ends of the coach. The corridor runs across the width of the coach at the ends, so that you can get access to the doors on each side and to the corridor connector leading to the next coach and also access to a toilet on one side at one end. Also the compartments are traditionally for first class passengers, most coaches would have part compartments and part regular seating, as seen in a later film where Malfoy beats up Harry and leaves him under the invisibility cloak, in the gangway in the middle of the coach between the seats. Most coaches of this type wouldn’t have a any compartments at all, as the first class area is normally limited to one or maybe two coaches on a train. I don’t normally bother with train or building interiors, but if I did in this I coach I’d have to follow Lego’s lead of a non-compartment coach, as 6-wide isn’t big enough. Lego have only put compartments in their collectors edition, where they have the same layout as me, with a door at each end and windows all the way along in between. - WOW that was a long reply!!!! But I hope it helps you understand what old British Rail coaches were like. thanks for commenting.

Did Lego really do a train carriage using the 1x3x4 train windows...and not put the train glass in the set. @MinifigJezАй бұрын
Yes, it's a good point. Something Lego don't normally worry about! But It wouldn't take much to adjust the two sides to make it look more like a brake coach. - Thanks for commenting

Hate to be a nerd but the corridors are actually called Gangway. Most commonly seen with MK1 coaches but not exclusive.
@MinifigJezАй бұрын
That's fine, I love nerdy details! - But... (and I'm not doubting you, just being interested) why do so many refer to them as corridor coaches? Has it over the years just become a generic term, in eh same way that people call all vacuum cleaners, Hoovers?
@Mike_WahousekeyАй бұрын
It’s really more about preference, gangway is just the proper name for them. And yeah its like the Hoover thing, It’s perfectly fine to call them corridors.

@@Mike_Wahousekey Thanks for letting me know. I thin I call them corridors, because growing up I had N-gauge railways, and Graham Farish and Hornby (The two most prominent manufacturers at the time) both called them Corridor Coaches!!!!! thanks again for taking the time to comment and reply

You should try to make the coal tender a little bit longer on the 2018 version of the train
@MinifigJezАй бұрын
Yes, at some point I'm going to make the tender AND the engine a bit longer. I have the 2018 set, but I also bought an extra engine and tender, so I could keep the original set and also modify one, to make it longer.

Thanks for commenting. Several other people have pointed that out to me, and I’d never noticed it before, so I did lots of freeze frames of the films to check it out!!! - Some have said it’s black between them, but I’m siding with you and think it’s dark red. At least it is VERY easy to fix, just a few 1x dark red plates! Apart from the stripe, did you like the MOC?

How stable is it? Looks pretty fragile to me, but looks and feels might be different
@MinifigJezАй бұрын
The long wiggly gold and red stripe at teh top is very fragile while building it, and while building the corridor connectors, they are fragile too, but once they are together it's very solid. I don't take my roofs off, but if you want a more solid roof, I would make it in three parts (similar to how the Emerald Night's coach were)...eg have fixed parts at each end over the doors, and just a central section that lifts off. But if the roof is staying, it's fine as it is. Thanks for commenting

Very nice. I don’t much care for trains as I think they eat up far too much space in a Lego city but I do enjoy watching people build them. Add to that the fact that it is in my preferred theme and I’m a happy camper. Great build.

The coaches are too narrow. Not natural. No real train has rows of seats only on one side. At least eight studs width.
@MinifigJezАй бұрын
I understand what you mean, and there are LOADS of people who make amazing looking 7 or 8 stud wide trains. I'm a member of the Lego UK Railway Group (LUKR) and there are some incredibly accurate models made by members, BUT... There is also a big group of people who have Lego's own trains, and buy the Hogwarts Express train sets, and are disappointed with the downsizing of the coaches (see my Hogwarts Coaches part 1 video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/boDYp6yrl7ljrdU) and I;m one of those people, I have so many Lego trains that I want my HE train to ft in with them, but have a decent looking coach... Hence putting "City Scale" in teh title and thumbnail, my layout wouldn't;t accommodate a 7 or 8 wide train. I hope that helps explain why I made this video and why I made the coaches this way. (You said no train has seats down just one side, but no train has less than 3 or 4 seats across, and you;d have difficulty fitting that in even at 8 studs wide!)
@stubusby7818Ай бұрын
@@MinifigJez I absolutely love the 8-wide detail for cars and trains, but when scaling for a LEGO city layout, I absolutely agree that 6-wide is the way to go! All my cars, speed champions, and trains within my city are 6-wide. Everything bigger has been banished to the display shelves!
