This train is running down the street through a neighborhood in Michigan City, Indiana. You can drive and follow a real train. If you live here: roll out of bed and touch it! This is not your typical commuter rail!
Unfortunately the line is being reconfigured and its uniqueness of riding in mixed traffic is no more.
Check out the full route of train as we stalk it by car in Michigan City here:
• Stalking the Tram (Oh ...
The South Shore Line (reporting mark NICD) is an electrically powered interurban commuter rail line operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) between Millennium Station in downtown Chicago and the South Bend International Airport in South Bend, Indiana, United States.
In Michigan City, the track runs down the middle of 11th street from Michigan Boulevard to Tennessee Street, where it crosses over to Tenth Street, and has an at-grade diamond with Amtrak's Michigan Services. The track then runs down Tenth Street to Sheridan Avenue on the west side of Michigan City. ~Wikipedia

Amazing that the line still exists. Most interurban lines were victims of eradication. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District saved it from extinction and put modern stainless steel cars in operation.

This line was started by an English chap who moved to America. His name was Samuel Insull. He used to work for Thomas Edison. He was involved in electric utility companies. The South Shore roughly began around 1901. He lost his businesses during the depression. We used to live one block South of the tracks on Elston Street , in Michigan City. After awhile one no longer notices the train passes. This is a great asset to the area. As it makes Michigan City practically a Chicago suburb. I rode this train much when I was younger. We used to take it to rock concerts in Chicago , at Soldier Field.

@@mattkennedy6115 It only does this in Michigan City, as far as I'm aware. The rest of the South Shore line route runs on grade-separated tracks. When the double-track project is completed, this section will not be used anymore, but the good news is that it will significantly reduce the travel time between South Bend and Chicago, and trains will be able to run more frequently, which is great for the NW Indiana region which is seeing a LOT of people moving in.

Great video. There was a time this was common in the US. Back when most town of any size had an electric streetcar line, and interurban lines criss-crossed the midwest. Often they would use city streetcar tracks to reach the centers of towns. The South Shore Line is a lingering remnant of the past.

At one time we had the North Shore Line which also had extensive street running in Milwaukee Wisconsin that the trains had to negotiate to reach the downtown Milwaukee Terminal. The trains running in the streets were restricted in using the whistles or horns and used the trolley gongs Also when there was the original Shore Line Route there was a lot of street running: Wilmette ILL on Greenleaf Avenue, Kenilworth Avenue in Kenilworth, and St.Johns Avenue in Highland Park ILL. The North Shore Line trains would all of a sudden sneak up on you on those streets not sounding the whistles or horns. The Shore Line Route was abandoned July 25 1955. The remainder of the North Shore Line was abandoned on January 21st 1963. Sadly no transit agencies were available back then in those years

One of the last (if not the last!) extant legacy Interurban rail lines in the U.S. A century ago Interurbans were a ubiquitous feature of the American transportation landscape, connecting most medium to large-sized cities with their hinterlands plus each other and were the backbone of a cohesive, highly extensive intra-intercity passenger rail infrastructure (*15,000 miles long in 1915 according to Wikipedia). With the growing popularity of the auto and its many alluring conveniences in the 1920s Interurban rail ridership plummeted and this form of transport quickly became regarded as an obsolete, unlucrative money pit by its operators. The Great Depression was the death-knell for the ephemeral Interurban network; by 1930 most lines had been torn up and the few survivors lucky enough to lumber on through the Depression and WWII era died off in the auto and suburb-obsessed halcyon Post War boom of the fifties. In short, the South Shore Line is a very unique remnant of rail history!

I remember riding the old orange cars back in the 60s. I was also on the chartered CERA train round trip from Chicago to South Bend when these trains were introduced into service in 81 I think. I always enjoyed riding through Michigan City. It seemed so special to be able to do that. I was about 12 and the train engineer (driver) saw me snap photos out the front of the train as far as I was able to stand. Access to the cab was open then. He offered to take my camera and photograph out of his front window! I still have those photos somewhere. We used to take the train from Chicago to flag stop called Birchim that was on the road we used to take from Rolling Prairie to Saugana Lake. My uncle and aunt who used to live in Rolling Prairie had a summer house on the lake where we (my family) used to stay when we visited. We had the time of our life going into Michigan City and visiting the stores. I recall it was quite a bustling city in the mid 60s.

Thanks for an extremely interesting video. I am British, but I was aware of this line from Chicago to South Bend, and that it had a section of street running. In Europe there are a number of places where passenger trains on minor lines run in the street. In Bad Doberan north-east Germany it is a steam train 'Moli'! I wonder what other European commentators may think, but I suspect that the only European line comparable to the South Shore Line is that from Chur to Arosa. On that line trains of up to about eight cars run along a main street of the city to/from Chur Hauptbahnhof.

Wonderful, but sadly the last use of the 11th Street station was on 30 April (?) to allow a complete rebuild of the 11st Street line and its historic station, segregating car traffic from trains. It won't be the same without mixed-traffic and pedestrian street loading, being the last example of a US interurban line running through the streets. It always seems scary to see cars and long trains on the same alignment, but the trains stay on the tracks - it's the cars that cause accidents. Michigan City residents have been used to this since 1908, so no-one can say "we didn't know about these noisy trains!" I have always been fascinated by this line and thank goodness I made the effort to ride and photograph it a few years ago. Absolutely unique.

The yard was full of interurban cars from the 1920s in various states of deterioration. However, the train in this video is not a tram. It is a 100% heavy-rail commuter train. These Japanese-built cars are 85 feet long, a little over 10 feet in width and weigh 118,000 lbs. (54,000 kg) each. The double-deck or gallery cars (3:32 - 4:09), also Japanese-built, using @ the same length and width, weigh in at @140,000 lbs. (63,502 kg) each. Definitely not "light-rail" specifications. Additionally, the same tracks that this train operates on are also used to make short freight car moves using full-size diesel engines (EMD GP38-2s) to move them. When you're driving down the street alongside these big behemoths, you quickly learn to give them their space and much respect because of their massive size in comparison to your relatively "tiny" automobile.

"Nicolas Blume" ... Brilliant conclusion ! I am an urban planner from Germany, the country where the "Tram-Train" System originally was invented once in Karlsruhe. As an innovation in suburban rail passenger transport. From the suburbs, passing all traffic-jams by the right-of-way, straight to the midst of downtown centers, working places and shopping malls, WITHOUT RIDERS HAVING TO INTERCHANGE. "We let the vehicles interchange and not the passengers", that's our philosophy behind this system. The conceptual and economic superiority results from an ingenious combination of regional railroad tracks, which are already there and existing or new constructed lightrail tracks within the cities, by multi-purpose hybrid rail vehicles (AC/DC or DC/Diesel). In contrast, the classic, cumbersome and personnel-intensive heavy railroad is often as efficient, as a Porsche on a dirt road. That's the reason why in 7 german cities, since introduction of such a multi-system, ridership has increased by 6 to 10 times, compared to the previous heavy system. kzbin.info/www/bejne/npOaq3l5nLmYhMk In deed, the "South Shore Line" would be a great pilot project, to introduce "Tram-Train" in the US, for the very first time. Chicago and South Bend are considering the reintroduction of streetcar/lightrail, what could be realized easily and cheap by extending the South Shore Line over and above their final stations into both city centers. Includes an internal shuttle-service between Downtown South Bend an the city's Airport, by the way. At marginal costs, as a by-product of the suburban line. My suggestion for Michigan City would be, to move the South Shore Line from 11th street closer to the Center, by mixed use of the existing northern Amtrak infrastructure and by closing the gap of rail track backwards to East 8th street, via serving Lighthouse outlets and Casino event area. In addition, todays route through 11th street could remain as part of an inner-city circulator, operated by vintage trolleys for tourism and transportation at the same (tranportainment). kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZKoi3t-jKqebrs This conception follows the approach, that people can only be inspired over the use of public transportation, if logistics are right and if the way to the stops is closer than the way to the car, figuratively spoken. Greetings from Germany ! "TRAM-TRAIN" Technical specifications: Capacity 250 pax. per single unit; Multiple traction of units possible; Speed 120 km/max.; Longest line 150 km (Karlsruhe); Bistro on bord; Toilets on bord; Spaces for bikes. To the end, here is something for all of you to enjoy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn7Sn3-hmtd1iaM
