I am really enjoying watching your videos. I have wanted to be a train engineer since I was little, I went with planes instead. I was wondering if you'd ever consider doing a video explaining what you're doing or what all the buttons do? When I play train simulator I hear the bell buzzing two and three times does this indicate stops or speed changes? I know it might be hard doing it in Dutch/English but I think it might be educational...just a thought. :)

Thanks! I am not the biggest show master so probably not.. 'Ping' are speed changes, 'Trr' means have to apply brakes, 'Trr trr trr' means allowed to release the brakes, 'Woohaa' means driver got up very early.

Was watching this and trying to work out what seemed wrong. Finally worked it out: the windscreen doesn't look like a bug apocalypse. Question about the throttle if you don't mind: It seems to have 'pairs' of settings; you use 2nd level for acceleration from stations, and that seems to get to about 60km/h. Sometimes you use full to get up to the usual 130km/h, but setting 5-6 or 6-7 (hard to see) seem to hold you there. Equally, you used that level (whichever it is) to accelerate to the speed instead of full, presumably for traction reasons with the rails being wet. Is that more or less how it works? The central gauge of the 3 to the left of the speedometer appears to be amps to the motors, is that correct? If not amps, some sort of power reading. I've been trying to figure what amps the various throttle levels provide to maintain certain speeds. Lastly, some bridges seem to interrupt the power. What's the deal with those? I notice you throttle down and then eventually a light comes on, presumably to do with power being restored. If not that, can you explain? The is the first of your vids I recall seeing with any steady rain. Also the first with a clean ICM windscreen. I suspect that's not a coincidence, lol. Oh, one last thing: when you get a set at the yard outside Schiphol, for example, how do you get there? Is it always a train you've taken there, or do you sometimes go there by other means to collect one already waiting? What can I say? I'm curious and like trying to figure things out. Don't feel obliged to answer; happy with whatever details you wish to give. I've been wondering about these things on the ICM (I like it for reasons I've explained) and thought I'd ask, seeing as you've posted a whole bunch of them lately (including the Enschede one I've hoped to see for some time). Cheers.

Hi Steeltrap. As regards the bridges interrupting the power supply, you've probably noticed the lack of wires on these. There are quite a few of these bridges on the NS. These bridges cross the many canals in The Netherlands. These bridges need to be raised or moved to allow canal traffic to pass - but these passes are coordinated with the NS timetable so that no NS train schedules are interrupted. Some of these bridges are quite small and then there is the monster just to the west of Gouda. As regards the clean windscreen, less flies to squash in the Autumn!! All the best..

Before I start, note that I'm not a certified train driver in any way, shape or form but I know some stuff about train traction systems. So these notches on the throttle indicate chopper settings. New NS trains (read: from about the 80s-90s) have electrical choppers in them that chop up the voltage coming from the "Boordnetomvormer" (the main voltage regulator that cuts down the 1500V from the overhead wire to all the necessary voltages to keep the train running, I will come back to that topic for your 3rd question) from the overhead wire to the necessary voltage the motors want. This is a lower voltage than the boordnetomvormer" gives, but in return gets you higher amps. You can hear the choppers do their work in specific cabs in an ICM set. This journey is one of them, we're in a coach which has the traction motors under the bogies. Coming from a stop and accelerating, first it's a low tone (the "start-up" chopper), then it quickly switches to a higher note (the next series of choppers) with a low drone sound building up underneath that and as speed goes up, so does the tone. Finally the first high tone fades away as those choppers' job are taken over by the final choppers. The traction handle starts at neutral, then "rangeren" or shunting (very low power, chopper stays at the lowest power throughput), then series (I think this also changes how the motors are wired to each other), then it's 3 settings of Serie-Zwakveld (series-weak force which actually gives you more power because electronic reasons, also switches some electronics inside each motor, but again, I think), then it's on to Paralel switching and finally it's paralel-weak force all the way to max power. Now most ICM sets have an unofficial "cruise control" where putting the throttle in one of the series-zwakveld settings (2 or 3, I can't remember) gives just enough power to cruise along at 130 km/h which is about the most common track speed in the Netherlands. But that's not always the case. Some sets will require more throttle to keep the speed, others are way too exited to go fast and require constant fiddling with throttle settings to keep the desired speed. I can imagine being in one of those cabs can actually be quite fun as you're constantly trying to keep a bazillion tons of steel at a constant speed with just one throttle setting. The 2nd of the three meters is indeed an amp meter. The 1st one (left->right) is overhead wire voltage, the 3rd battery voltage. As for the bridges, some but not all bridges actually don't have any overhead wires attached to them. These bridges can be opened to let boats trough, and since you don't want a sailing boat to get its mast stuck in the wires some bridges don't have them all together. It's a necessity to get rid of traction completely at these points, because failing to do so will result in the motors asking for power as you get a gap between the wire and the pantograph (to ease the pantograph from and onto the wire the wire is raised up at the cut-off point at both sides of the bridge) meaning you get massive plasma arcing (basically a miniature lightning strike) as current tries to flow trough thin air, damaging the wires and pantograph severely. The light that comes on at these points is the "boordnetomvormer" cutting out since it's not receiving power, and you have to wait with giving power to the motors again until the "boordnetomvormer" is fully up and running again (you can also hear the airco cut off at these times as that also runs off of it) and, as you said, power is restored. Some bridges with overhead wires can also cause the "boordnetomvormer" to cut out, but that's just because the wire on the bridge has poor contact with the mainland wires. Hope this is more than enough info to get you going.

Well, thanks to your college subscribers (thanks), I only have to answer one question: We usually get to the Hoofddorp Yard by train, as a driver or as a passenger. Early in the morning sometimes, before trains are running, by taxi.

Well, everyone, thanks for the great answers. Especially Vel0city, who appears to have written a technical manual (which I love). Most of it I'd guessed (it's interesting to see how the issue of wires over bridges that can be raised has been solved as I know some do it), but the detail was great. As I don't speak/read Dutch, the explanation of the specifics on the throttle were very useful. I've never seen our friendly driver use anything other than what looks like position 6 to maintain 130km/h, so I'm not sure about any ICM being able to do so with lower settings. Mind you, that's merely a matter of curiosity. Again, thanks for responses. I have family in The Netherlands, and almost always end up on ICM when I visit, so have a reason to enjoy it. Besides, it has by far the best cabin position for a viewer. I'm not sure about which is most comfortable for the driver; perhaps our friend can answer that? Cheers

ICM is my favorite, great view, comfortable suspension, maybe not very suitable for long legs. Regarding the throttle, I will upload some close-up shots tomorrow.
