Slingshots instructional video: • How to Fly a Slingshot...
First things first what are kiteboarding trainer kites for? Well, it's usually the first step people take to get into kiteboarding. It’s a tool to safely teach you the basics of flying an actual kiteboarding kite.
So what does that mean? It means you can practice a number of drills to prepare for your kiteboarding lesson. Is this a step you can skip yes. Will it make a huge difference in your lesson? Absolutely! I’ve been teaching for 6 years now and more or less anyone who spends even a few hours on a trainer kite gets in the water a day earlier than those who don’t.
So with the Slingshot B2 or B3, you get one of the better looking and most basic of trainer kites. There is nothing too technical about them.
These are basic ram air foil trainer kites they come with two lines and a control bar.
It is possible to launch and land them on their own. Slingshot has a great video that I borrow the supplemental shots from. It is easier with a partner though.
There are three line kites that you can launch and land solo a bit easier.
So with these, there are a number of drills you can practice and I’ll include a link to a couple videos showcasing how to use a trainer in the description.
You can also use these with your skis or a snowboard in a field. Or even a skateboard in a parking lot.
It’s not going to be the ride of your life but it’s a great way to dip your toes learn how to kiteboard before taking a lesson.
Don’t expect to take these on the water. They won’t generate enough power to ride unless it’s dangerously windy.
Between these two, riders above 150 are going to have a lot more fun with the B3 as it’s a larger kite and you’ll be able to slide through the sand and generate some traction with the kite.
If you're under 150, or you’re looking to teach your kids, the B2 might be a better option.
Aside from that, these are basically the same kite.
